Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive , New Music , Music Appreciation , New Releases Simon Joyner, Getty Arguably the most anticipated show at Pop Montreal this year was the sold-out Grimes gig. Prefaced by many as a "shit show", many festival pass holders and ticket-less fans scrambled to get there early and grab a spot inside Montreal's Club Soda to catch the Polaris Prize contender. [...]
Miracle Fortress, the Montreal synthpop group led by Think About Life's Graham Van Pelt, has a new video for "Miscalculations," a twinkling sigh of a song from their Was I The Wave? album. The video collects Hipstamatic-style footage from the band's recent North American tour, and it's funny to see present-day stuff made to look like '70s home movies. As a special bonus, we get to see the Dallas Mavericks win the NBA Title all over again, and I'm pretty sure that'll never get old. Debbie So directs. Watch it below. Read [...]
It’s been awhile since we've heard anything from Graham Van Pelt under his Miracle Fortress moniker. The last time was way back in 2007 on the Polaris Prize shortlisted Five Roses , and since then it seemed as if the project might have been abandoned, with Van Pelt opting to concentrate on his other band, Think About Life, instead. But it seems that Van Pelt isn't the kind of artist that can be tied to any one project. Miracle Fortress is set to release their sophomore LP, Was I The Wave? , on April 26 via Secret City, and [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Secret City Records Think About Life 's Graham Van Pelt has done a complete overhaul on the sound of his other project, Miracle Fortress . On Thursday, building off of his performance at last year's Pop Montreal Music Festival , Van Pelt treated the CMW audience at Lee's Palace in Toronto to an entire set of new songs off of his as-yet-untitled new record, which is [...]

I was somewhat hesitant on doing this list. But I was like heck with it and list down my favorite shows of 2010. Going through the photos I've taken in 2010. I made a list of my Top 20 favorite shows in and out of Ottawa. Enjoy the photos. Please comment if you feel a show was missing. Caribou and Toro Y Moi at Babylon Nightclub The first of two shows Caribou did in 2010. The show on May 4, 2010 was fun [...]

This year's Pop Montreal is lookin' like one for the books. The ever-so-good Said the Gramophone wrote up an excellent guide for this year's Pop Montreal. Basing this post off that and the POP MONTREAL site, I'm gonna go through what would be a pretty ideal long weekend of music and then we'll see how close I come to accomplishing it. Pop Montreal starts Wednesday, September 29th and the fun doesn't stop until Sunday, October 3rd. * Underlined shows/events are ones I will foreseeably be going to. Sometimes, there are overlaps (Thursday's a [...]

One of the greatest things about Bestival (besides the Women’s Institute Tea Tent, Forum Campsite and Fancy Dress day on Saturday) is the music. With rain clouds and mud making an appearance it was the music more than anything that did its very best to blow the grey clouds away. Berkshire 4 piece Worship was the first band to grace the poorly named Rock N Roll stage on Saturday (a stage that during the weekend would feature pop, dance and acoustic folk - hardly Rock N Roll). Worship were the [...]
THINK ABOUT LIFE To be honest, we aren't exactly shy of contrasts and comparisons on this blog. Upon hearing a tune for the first time it's in our nature to immediately liken it's components to that of other music we've previously heard. We all do it, don't we? Well, how would you like to hear our strangest musical allegory to date? We think we just heard Win Butler , of Arcade Fire fame, fronting The Go Team ! That's what smacked our imagination full in the face upon pressing play on the brilliant tune, [...]

Frank Yang A local scribe much wiser than I recently pointed out that everyone - in Canada and Toronto specifically - has some baggage when it comes to Broken Social Scene , and you can take it from the fact that I'm quoting him that I wholly agree. This is the band that, for good and bad, came to be the musical ambassadors for Toronto to the world, would become pretty much inescapable both in the music world and the real world (swing a stick in Toronto, hit a BSS-er) and launched a thousand bands with [...]

My predictions for the Nuggets were flat wrong last week. I'm left to root for Los Suns. This is what my NBA viewing has come down to. Sigh. When does the NFL training camp start? We have about a month to go for the World Cup to start, but the playing times are 8:30 AM or noon if I'm not mistaken. So who's ready for "Iron Man 23? My only beef with the movie is the continued use of Gwneth Paltrow. That chick has ZERO presence and KELIS - ACAPELLA (ACID WASHED [...]

Monday: Los Campesinos! + Cymbals Eat Guitars @ Irving Plaza 9pm $20 [ tix ] Thanks to the volcano whose name I dare not type (it's really hard), Los Campesinos! have been sitting somewhere in Europe waiting to get their U.S. tour off and rolling. Last night they did just that at Maxwell's and tonight they do their make-up show at Irving Plaza. The wait may have been annoying, it may have been a pain in the ass, but when they hit the stage tonight you will all know [...]

Recommended Show: SUNDAY, APRIL 25, 2010 WBAR-B-Q @ BARNARD COLLEGE Lefrak Gym 3009 Broadway New York, NY 10027 FREE, Noon Yes, we know it's raining. But the rain really doesn't stop the WBAR-B-Q! Though the event is moving inside to the Lefrak Gym instead of outside on the Lehman Lawn, it should still be a good time considering acts like Cold Cave , U.S. Girls , and Think About Life are all scheduled to play. Doveman [...]
Monday: Darlings, The Sneaks, Cybelle Blood, + Night Reports @ Bruar Falls 8pm FREE [ info ] While Monday may just be the most depressing day of the week, it can be made better when you know there's a kick ass free show lined up to end your day. Tonight three bands I've never heard of and Darlings open the doors to Bruar Falls for a free show. Now I know there's always a bit of trepidation when you don't know the bands, but since there's no cover or [...]

Facebook There was welcome and unexpected news in the inbox yesterday morning with the announcement that Sarah Harmer was back. It didn't seem like she'd been away that long, but now that I think about it, the last time I saw her in any context was at Wolfe Island in 2007 with the reunited Weeping Tile , and it's been almost five years since the release of her last album I'm A Mountain . So June 22, when her latest effort Oh Little Fire [...]

Montreal's Think About Life are about to head out on the road again with a few shows this weekend in Canada before kick things off full gear in the states later this month. The band are taking this trek in continued support from their latest album, Family , which was released on Alien8 Recordings last year. Included on this list of tour dates is a performance at the annual WBAR-B-Q, which takes place on April 25 on the lawn of Barnard College here in New York City. Think About Life tour [...]
