Filed under: The Hit List There are more than 60 artists on Matador Records' 'Matador at 21' six-CD retrospective. There are 26 playing the New York indie label's birthday concerts in Las Vegas Oct. 1 through 3. When you've put out nearly a thousand records, not every band can make the cut. Every longtime Matador fan can name at least one artist that they wish was [...]

"I told the boys I had a touch of thrombophlebitis, blood clots in the veins in my feet, and was afraid about tomorrow's climb, not that it would hobble me but would get worse when we came down. Morley said 'Is thrombophlebitis a peculiar rhythm for piss?'" - Jack Kerouac Thinking Feller's Union Local 282 - The Operation
i'm getting ready to finish up a 2-week break from work here and it occurred to me that not once in that period did i have the slightest desire to update this blog. i guess i still don't, since all i've got is this lazy post with a bunch of songs that remind me of the ways i have been spending my time.... mostly video games. lots of video games... ratchet and clank future: tools of destruction (ps3) mp3: kid tiger - future umbrella mp3: daft punk [...]

Hey, is it too soon to change the main banner image text at the top of this page to "Big In India?" Because I just got mentioned on some Indian news website for being an "influential" blogger. See for yourself ! That's just one reason why things are looking very bright, my friends. It's a beautiful day outside, and everything feels right in the world. The Mets hammered the Florida Marlins 9-0 today (Jose Reyes hit 2 homeruns, Beltran added one of his own) behind two solid innings from pitcher Oliver Perez. Then I found some cool [...]
Hello space invaders, welcome to another installment of what we here at SF headquarters like to call "Sunday Mix Tape". I couldn't be bothered to compile my own tape tonight because I bought a lot of new records at work today and I wanted to relax in my bedroom and enjoy them without the added distraction of having to copy files from my hard drive to my laptop. The tunes sounded good! All the beautiful Japanese Blue Note/Prestige/DIW jazz reissues sound stunning! I felt like such an audiophile nerd sitting in bed thinking to myself, "Holy fuck! You can actually [...]

this compilation is subtitled "some songs that chemical imbalance magazine likes a lot" - now i never read the magazine but judging by this article by the publisher mike mcgonigal, i missed out. and what better reason to do a compilation - collecting together a pile of songs you like by bands you admire. and it seems mike mostly liked early 90s indie rock. lucky us. incidentally, mike now publishes the book-sized zine "yeti". 1. phoaming edison - stencil queen 2. thinking fellers union local 282 - out in the kitchen 3. kicking giant [...]

After a nice dinner last night at the new Michaelangelo's location in Silver Lake last night, I realized that I didn't have enough time to compile a mix tape and put together the White Hills review. White Hills gets preferential treatment over mix tapes, so that's why I'm posting the mix now, on Monday. I hope you won't mind the tardiness, I think this one's pretty far out there... RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or [...]

It is hard to believe that there is a tribute album to The Residents that does not suck, but it exists: Eyesore: A Stab At The Residents was released in 1996 on Vaccination Records, and I think it is better than about 90% of the original Residents releases. (I never thought I'd say that about an album that has Primus on it.) Like so many great albums, it seems to be out of print, so here it is for your listening pleasure in digital form. MP3s: Only a Mother / [...]

Chris From Australia! Thank you for your donation you wonderful, special person you! Nicci from down the street! Thank you for your surprise donation, it was completely unnecessary you wonderful, special girlfriend you! That makes for six donations in five days. We've almost reach half of my goal with ten days left to go! Please keep donating, friends. If you love [...]

Yeah for me. I've managed to keep this blog going for a year now, and my download numbers keep increasing, so it's good to know I can still turn people onto music, take them on a slightly different musical journey than they would have. People always have a curious reaction when they first hear the name Funeral Pudding. It is actually an album by one of my all-time favorite bands, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - from San Francisco and often on Matador Records. The odd juxtaposition of words is what always caused it to stick in my mind, and [...]
As you have probably heard, the Writers Guild is currently on strike. That means no soap operas, variety shows, sitcoms and whatever the hell this is. The major issue at hand is how to compensate writers for "new media". New media is what is called a "buzzword" even though it's actually two words and no one knows what it means. From what I can gather, the union scribes want cash for internet downloads. Which sounds pretty good. Which is why I've decided to join my brothers in the guild. That's right, I'm on strike. One more time: I'M ON STRIKE! [...]
Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I've collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their "song obsessions of the week." Quite often it's easy to explain why the song is good; it's much hard to explain why we're obsessed. Maybe you'll become obsessed with one of these. - Adrian ( me ): the Lightning Bug Situation - Message to Myself after Franny [...]
As I went to click on my text file of potential blogs topics, I accidentally clicked the wrong icon. When the program opened, I was staring at an old document that was originally created as an exercise in using correct grammar. When I was in Chicago last year, Jet and I spent a booze-filled evening dictating stories from our childhood. The goal was to judge our ability to transcribe conversations. After working on my books for months, I was convinced I was an expert recorder. Jet proved me wrong, as you'll see, and her transcription of my story is far [...]
Hey there. Tomorrow show last night (I know that doesn't make sense to you) was fun. Everyone was there. If you weren't, you're a nobody. Also, I was privileged enough to met a few more new people, all of whom were very nice. Except that one guy. God, what an asshole! Today I drank some booze and watched a lot of baseball. Lazy days... Hey, here's a mix tape. I scored a lot of this material from Steve, in return for his spending the past week raping my entire CD collection and my portable hard drive. [...]

Thinking Fellers Union Local 282- The Invitation Do you still get calls like this? It's pathetic, but I still make similar calls once every blue moon. Contrasting Hugh's invitation to "get really drunk and high" with a mournful dirge is a stroke of genius typical of Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 , a California-based experimental band. They were sort of a crankier Camper Van Beethoven. "The Invitation," from 1994, is the perfect introduction or conclusion to a savage mix CD.
