4AD are issuing a boxset of all three This Mortal Coil albums on November 14th. Each has been re-mastered from the original analogue studio tapes by John Dent at Loud Mastering, to achieve the best digital sound available today. There will also be a fourth album, Dust & Guitars , that compiles all the singles, including an unreleased one that was to have been part of the Rough Trade Singles Club and their otherwise unavailable recording of Neil Young's We Never Danced . To say Diane Birch and the Phenomenal Handclap Band reimagine gothic rock as pop would be misleading. Classics like the Sisters of Mercy's "This Corrosion" (produced by Jim Steinman of Bat Out of Hell fame!) and Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Kiss Them for Me" were great pop songs from the start. Diane Birch and the Phenomenal Handclap Band simply reimagine them as vintage seventies pop.
Cover songs can be tricky to do well, particularly those of classic songs by bands with their own cult followings. But Diane Birch is no ordinary artist. I loved her Bible Belt album, so I would've been interested in hearing any new music she recorded.
