My Favorite Album Ever (This Week): This Mortal Coil – “It’ll End in Tears”

This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren "Cocteau Twins"
As a younger gent in the late '80s through the mid '90s, I fancied myself one of the dark crowd. I lived in my painted leather biker jacket, eye-liner, white button-down shirt, black jeans & Doc Martens. Lurking by the record bins at Wax Trax, deciding which t-shirt at FashioNation most fit my look while [...] The post My Favorite Album Ever (This Week): This Mortal Coil - "It'll End in Tears" appeared first on Your Music Is Awful.com .

Top 40 Cover Songs from Movies

Top 40 Cover Songs from Movies Of course,  Say Anything  has "In Your Eyes",  Goodfellas  has "Layla",  Apocalypse Now  has "The End",  Fight Club  has "Where Is Your Mind", but a cover song in a movie is just different. A cover song in a movie elevates the drama - ascribing all kinds of meaning and sentiment to the music being played. All of a sudden this song that we're pretty sure we've heard before is chewing the scenery and the actors fade into the background. When the director has two characters listen to Sonic Youth cover The Carpenters, or opens his film with a dusty acoustic [...]

Old tears

Old tears Having gone down a Cocteau Twins rabbithole, I guess it was inevitable that I'd find my way to the heart of the old 4AD cosmos (or at least the musical output of label boss Ivo Watt-Russell). This may be the end of line when it comes to maudlin teen angst. But then I've found a disturbing ability to stare too long into the most embarrassing of my high school memories and come away with a charmed laugh. Also, I do still dig the bass part in this one. Old sap, I am. [...]

Guest Post: Big Sair’s TFI Friday (5th October)

Guest Post: Big Sair’s TFI Friday (5th October) Mrs Mackerel has decided to take a short sabbatical and invite some friends, relatives and countrywomen to takeover her Friday night post, a Friday routine as regular in this household as a G&T with lime, or pizza Margherita for the sprats. For week three, we hand over the reins to Big Sair… And with a flourish of my long fishtail, I take the baton for this third week of Mrs M's sabbatical. We had joy, we had fun, but no season in the sun in 2012 – I'm [...]

A strong double-dose from the Second Language label pushes the British pastoralism envelope even further.

MONO – FOR MY PARENTS – New Album

Mono - Formica Blues (1998)
You may remember this from the 90s, I think this was in the Ethan Hawke remake of Great Expectations, I have a real soft spot for this era, of electronic pop. That has nothing to do with this Mono, who have more in common with Dirty Three, John Williams and Sigur Ros than they anything else. But I've been really low with watching the slow and somewhat painful death of my rommmate, so I'm trying to listen to more uplifting shit. A friend suggested this, as at times [...]

Insides-Euphoria

Insides-Euphoria Insides-Euphoria Lets face it. 4AD in the 802s and 902s, while at times effulgent and singular in vision, had trouble discerning the gorgeous from muck debris. If you have had the misfortune of having to sit through the entirety of the This Mortal Coil trilogy more than once, my sympathies; here is hoping you took something strong enough to dull the pain. While considered by many to be one of the high watermarks of 4AD ,  I found it to be pretentious, overblown and downright boring. Don't believe what you hear, [...]

This Mortal Coil – Song To The Siren (Tim Buckley cover)

This Mortal Coil – Song To The Siren (Tim Buckley cover) She came by for advice that we disguised under the pretense of rum and beer. The Old friend, how’ve ya been? kind of dance. We gathered and circled till what we really wanted to say to one another began pumping out in rhythm from the patched hollows of our chests: did we make the right choice, choosing what we did? Then why this pale unhappiness, why are we still thrashing our bodies against the rocks in someone else’s dream? Oh, my friend, I wanted to say, I am unfit to answer even the question of what we shall [...]

Celebrating Independence with… 4AD

BLONDE REDHEAD - '23'
In honor of Independence Day, KEXP is saluting some of our favorite indie record labels who's DIY-spirit helped revolutionize the music industry. As an independent radio station ourselves, KEXP is thrilled to give a 13-gun salute to these pioneers with a series of label spotlights through the Fourth of July. In this profile, we look to one of our UK forefathers, 4AD: Ivo Watts-Russell and Peter Kent had humble expectations when they began the record label that would become 4AD in 1979. They were just [...]

Now the tale will be told in full with the publication of music journalist Martin [...]

This Mortal Coil: This Mortal Coil (Box Set)

Another go-around for the three albums from the definitive 4AD band. This time with bonus disc of singles and outtakes. From the mid-1980s through the early '90s, you couldn't get more "alternative" than 4AD. The British record label, founded by Ivo Watts-Russell and Peter Kent, was a virtual haven for people who liked their clothes black and their mascara blacker. 4AD sported bands with arty names like Bauhaus, Cocteau Twins, and the Wolfgang Press. Designer Vaughan Oliver's cryptic yet instantly recognizable sleeves looked like relics from a lost, underground civilization. Oh, yes -- and then...

Christmas Gifts for the Music Geek In Your Life

Christmas Gifts for the Music Geek In Your Life 'Tis the season to be spending money you don't have on consumer items, and spending the rest of the next year paying off your credit card bills. Merry Christmas, everyone! But if there's a music lover on your list of people to get gifts for, you can at least rest happily in the knowledge that some of your cash has gone toward buying something you'd want for yourself. Or, of course, you can eschew the whole gifting thing and just buy some of this stuff for yourself. Either way, here are some of the things that hit the shelves this [...]
