By Taylor K. Long While record browsing with a friend at Greenpoint's Permanent Records last week, I found a copy of the Long Winters album, When I Pretend To Fall in the .99 section and realized that though I love it, I don't own it in any physical form. The kind clerk informed me that .99 CDs were three for $1, so essentially I could pick out two more CDs for free. When deciding which CDs to get, I wondered, Should I pick something random and hope it's good? What are the odds of something in the .99 section being [...]

It's been hot, it's been sweaty, every band in the world is on tour, and I just got air conditioning for the first time in my adult life (so not punk). I guess that means it's summer, the best time ever to be young and free in New York City. Time to go to Rockaway Beach to look at the surfers and/or Coney Island to eat some Nathan's and pretend you're in some Neil Simon play. Most importantly, it's time to party party party party party! Well, that's the theme of this week's ...
The King Khan & BBQ Show's break-up last week in Daegu, South Korea was raucously entertaining, much like the garage-rockers' renowned shows. Jay Mattson provides his first-hand account of the chaotic scene at Bar Guess, where Arish Khan and Mark Sultan have appeared to part ways after over a decade of working together.
Thomas Function - Snake In The Grass The voluminous praise for Huntsville, Alabama's Thomas Function dwelling on this site sports nods of approval hailing from indisputably reputable zines ( Dusted and All Music Guide , to name but a few). I finally had the pleasure of watching Thomas Function at New York City's Cake Shop last Thursday. Overall? Enjoyable. Are they talented? Yes. Fun? Sure. Anthemic? Occasionally. Though from what I gathered speaking with other bloggers, the band's played better shows, the recent departure of their keyboardist notwithstanding. [...]

Three I-can't-believe-how-many-folks -have-not-been-to-the-Empty-Bo ttle-despite-liking-music reasons to, if that is the case, go to the Empty Bottle this very evening... 1. Alabama's Thomas Function play pop music. In today's world, we'd have a tendency to slap the garage label on it but listen to it. This is good old indie pop a la a band you've never heard of but I will cite none the less, Sportsguitar. Thomas Function is the sound of guitars, bass, and drums, sometimes fuzzy, sometimes cleaner, played with pop sensibilities. It seems so simple yet alludes so many. Kudos [...]

This post is a bit past its prime, since the show happened on Friday. Still, the evening is worth recounting. It was an electric night in Williamsburg; people seemed to be spilling out of every bar and restaurant, enjoying the nice weather. Monster Island basement was no exception, though the crowded venue seemed more like a place where people were just hanging out, rather than watching bands. I arrived just in time for Girls At Dawn. As I predicted, my enjoyment of them was directly correlated to their bad-assness. Which was unfortunately nill. The songs have some merit, but it [...]

This is another one of those shows moved from the much bigger Market Hotel to much smaller Monster Island Basement. Harlem's new album, Hippies , is garage-tacular, ripping off one hook-laden rocker after another. The photo from above is when I saw them at Mercury Lounge the day of that crazy snowstorm, where they played a good show for a weather-weary audience. These guys are real Texan punks; I like the feel of their live show and will always recommend it. Why I am MOST excited for this show, however, are Alabamans (is that right?) Thomas [...]

Huntsville, Alabama has been suffering lately. Only a week after a horrific middle school shooting in the nearby town of Madison, the deranged Dr. Amy Bishop went to a faculty meeting at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and killed several members of the Biology Department. Bishop's psychotic spree put Huntsville briefly in the national news, and no one in town is happy about the negative attention. It's a shame. Despite the recent violence, Huntsville is a gentle place and its residents display a hospitality that tends to shock people who visit from outside of the [...]
Leaner, meaner Thomas Function returns from the wilds of Alabama
Plenty of shows to see this week...
"They got the guns, but we got the numbers." -- James Morrison, touting a strategic advantage "Come on. Help me! HELP! HELP!" -- Thomas Scharpling, yelling for the arrival of his army "It's a recession. I'm not gonna name names, but, uh, let's just say there's a new President . Right? No? Played that wrong? Blaming Obama for this? That's not going over so well. No, I'm kidding. That was a joke. Please, [...]

In recent years the crowd that is claiming "the album is dead" has grown louder and louder. We couldn't disagree more. As more and more people turn to iTunes and the Hype Machine to download the latest and greatest singles, we have stuck to the traditional album listening and found that there are still some truly great records being made these days. For most of this year we have been inundated by bands breaking into the world, mainstream artists trying to recapture their former glory, and indie rock "superstars" growing into their own, it has been exciting and fun and [...]

[mp3] Thomas Function: "ADP Blues" Sometimes it's about the impulse buys. We weren't pitched on this album. Don't even know the label or publicist. Don't really care. This song and album started out as an impulse buy off the Other Music shelves, yet, it has managed to persevere for over a month now on the iPhone, which experiences an extremely high turnover rate. There's nothing flooringly remarkable about Thomas Function's new album In The Valley of Sickness , except that it's so damn consistently good from cover to cover. I [...]

Date October 31 and November 1 Location Beerland Doors 1000PM Tickets Tickets at the door I've alluded to the great spastic shows that Thomas Function puts on, and I have been spinning their newest album, In the Valley of Sickness, non-stop for the last few weeks. Well, lucky me, they are doing a two-night stand [...]
