Plenty going on this week's dead tree edition of the Nashville Scene. Jennifer O'Connor's latest, Here With Me, may seem sad, but she didn't mean to fool you. (Playing Tuesday, 10th at The End w/Hale... Continue reading "Jennifer O'Connor, Otis Gibbs, Basement Bash and More: Inside This Week's Music Section" >

Not many people take a vacation to New York in January. Actually, it's quite likely no one does. But my friend Bill was having a birthday, quite a significant one too, and...umm, there were a bunch of good gigs coinciding with his birthday, so the trip was well worth any weather shortcomings. My flight from Seattle touched down at JFK right about the time one was making an emergency landing in the Hudson River . Oblivious to the events at hand, I deplaned and jumped in a cab to Brooklyn and Bill's place. The first thing I [...]

Ida Maria is the consummate performer; she somehow manages to hit that sweet spot of absolutely adorable and totally badass. TLC was lucky enough to catch her US debut show at Mercury Lounge on Thursday night. I had been a fan since over a year ago when she was getting popular in the UK and am really happy for her that she's getting the buzz and hype over here in the States that she deserves. She tore through her 7 song set with passionate delivery and built [...]

The ladies from Those Darlins have been getting a lot of press lately. Beyond being named my band of the week, they have been profiled on all sorts of blogs far and wide most of which have hailed the trio as one of those bands to watch here in 2009. Listening to their music you can't help but fall in love with their melodies and harmonies and that twang that hangs over every bit of their music, but live these ladies go even further worming their way deeper into your hearts. Wearing mostly gold the three ladies, and [...]

photo: dave d. e. Gold leggings/coon skin cap... take THAT, Lady Gaga! But fashion statements aside, one part of Those Darlins' show that really stood out was when singer/guitarist Jessi Darlin dedicated a song that revealed some hard feelings toward a member of her own family who, among other relatives, happened to catch this show ("...don't make momma cry..."). *giant elephant with mature tusks enters room*. Way to throw down & own the turf, ladies. Oh and also dude on drums. You played nicely too. [...]

Well, unfortunately we didn't get all the 2008 Holiday Interviews posted before the New Year, but we'll try and share the ones that we had left over/didn't get in time/etc as they are relevant in the next month...Luckily we had one from Those Darlins . Don't forget and don't be lazy...come out to Radio Radio tonight and see them! Only $5! Wild One : [...]

As much as country has influenced some of the music I tend towards I have never been a huge fan of the genre. Sure, I would dabble here and there with the likes of Willie Nelson and company but I've never given it much of a chance at all. I never really intended to change that but I was introduced to Those Darlins a couple of days ago and this is country I can get behind! Totally 2-step, a little rock, and maybe somewhat punk (though I don't really see it) this trio of Southern belles is definitely [...]
Although it's a cold, cold Thursday in early January, there's certainly a ton going on tonight around town. I'll report back from Girl Talk's sold-out Pageant show tomorrow (hopefully it won't involve... Continue reading "Tonight, Tonight: Shows Around Town, Thursday, January 8" >
It's only Tuesday, but you need to start planning your weekend now. Those Darlins , one of the outstanding bands that played our Americana Music Association Festival and Conference show this past September in Nashville, TN , are playing Radio Radio, this Friday night, for only $5! They'll be joined by Kentucky Nightmare and Dorsey. Our friends at Tugboat Productions in Nashville, Tennessee sent us a couple pretty great videos from the Darlins' recent in-store performance at Grimey's [...]
"Wild One" - Those Darlins Take the Appalachian back-porch music of the Carter family and paste a Lily Allen-style 21st-century 20-something's attitude on top of it and here we are. This is not complicated stuff, but it's utterly charming, somehow. To begin with, there's something wonderful in the air when you're hearing three women, employing a hillbilly melody, accompanied by retro-sounding rhythm and lead guitars (plus, a ukulele in the mix), singing words like this: "If you can't handle crazy/Go ahead and leave/If you don't want a wild one/Quit hangin' round with me." [...]
*Mike Bones - What I Have Left* Florian Horwath - Dad... Bosque Brown - Went Walking Those Darlins - Wild One AC Newman - Submarines Of Stockholm

As if finding out that Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys will be touring next year with Hacienda as his backup band wasn't good enough, apparently their opening act is also pretty kick ass as well. I'd never heard of Those Darlins until seeing the announcement that they would be touring with Auerbach in support of his solo effort. Seeing as how we're more or less gay for anything Dan Auerbach does, I clicked on Those Darlins MySpace page and was immediately taken with their unique perspective on country music. Their sound channels the traditional country sound you'd [...]

Legendary New York band Boss Hog will be returning to the New York stage, at the Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday, December 17, 2008, headlining an incendiary evening of outrageously perverse rock'n'roll, degenerate burlesque, and chasm-like grooves. Led by the wildly sexy and completely unpredictable punk chanteuse Cristina Martinez and her blues-exploding husband Jon Spencer , this will mark Boss Hog's first hometown show since 2000. Boss Hog's 1989 debut as a last-minute fill in at CBGBs saw the beginning of a rotating line-up featuring members of New York's noisiest [...]

MUSIC NEWS - The legendary NYC punk blues band, Boss Hog will return to the New York stage on Wednesday, December 17, at the Bowery Ballroom , headlining an evening of their deliciously outrageous, perverse rock'n'roll, degenerate burlesque, and chasm-like grooves. Led by the wildly sexy and completely unpredictable punk chanteuse Cristina Martinez and her blues-exploding husband Jon Spencer , this will mark Boss Hog's first hometown show since 2000. The band has evolved over the years, with a rotating line-up that featured members of New York's noisiest gentry, Pussy Galore, the [...]

Lately, the doctors and nursemaids here at the asylum have been tunin' in and turnin' on to the veiled seductions of the Murfreesboro, Tennessee lady trio, Those Darlins. Well, techinically we can only find four songs by them. Our rock 'n roll stethsocopes can tell you patients that their debut single "Wild One" b/w "Drivin' Nails In My Coffin" reminds us of an old 78 record bein' played through the skeletal remains of a burnt out Grand Ol' Oprey. Think of their sound as a weary 'n wayward homespun Carter family [...]

Who would think that a member of a two person band would desire to go solo? Probably not many, but Black Keys guitarist and vocalist Dan Auerbach will do just that with the February 10th release of his solo debut, Keep it Hid , via Nonesuch . Recorded in the guitarist's Akron analog studio, to give it a "live, organic sound," the album is said to see the Akron native playing a handful of new instruments, including drums and keyboards-and of course-the axe. "Nothing was too plotted or planned, just a lot of spontaneity...This [...]
