I've been listening to electronic music since time. What an English literature major is to text I am to electronic music - live and breath electro. Of the genres that are embedded in my blood: house music, techno, jungle, drum and bass, disco and minimal. Recently I've been privy to this whole dubstep popularity. Don't get me wrong, I'm not all like "wobowobo" now, it's just that there is some dubstep out there that I actually dig. But I would never say that dubstep is my go to genre. Which is the complete opposite for many [...]

Producer Infamous Reptar comes in with some freshness. Literally. A couple of short beats but as always go for quality over quantity, and they're dope. I hear a song that rips my heart/mind out and lays it bare to the sun. I'm in a spendy mood, and listening to a decent new album with a big 'BUY NOW' link. I've heard a band's great single on a blog, and am halfway through listening to the second, even better, single. My dear friend recorded/produced/sang backup/played harp/etc on a good record. I feel tempted to buy a record first digitally for whatever dumb reason. Everyone is going apeshit over a new Best New Music record, and yeah, [...]
This week's NYC concert calendar is another really nice and diverse mix of shows, including a multi-night run by the National, My Morning Jacket w/ Band of Horses at MSG, American Babies at Mercury Lounge, and two nights of Atlas Sound, among many other interesting shows.
On Your Marx The first intellectual consequence of the economic crisis was to undermine neoliberalism—or the belief in the sufficiency of markets to secure human welfare—as the age's default ideology. The second was to prompt a hasty resurrection of Keynes....
Quick and Easy Album Reviews We used to bring tons of music goodies to Chicago. No doubt it was how our bread was buttered so to speak. Now we're a tad more diverse, but we recently listened to 3 new...

As we prepare for the 2011 Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, we are bringing you previews of several of the bands playing that we are looking forward to seeing. In the days leading up to the festival on July 15th, you can stop by ENS and see a P4K centric preview for the bands. Enjoy a quick preview of the upcoming set from Thurston Moore. Yet another performance we are really excited to see this year at Pitchfork. WHO?: Thurston Moore is of course, the frontman and founding member of [...]
We Like It Raw - Notes on a 7 Day Cleanse We are generally pretty healthy. By conservative estimates we exercise 4-5 times a week, eat probably 60% organic with the other 40% containing lots of low fat options. We...

This is probably my favorite mix ever...until my next favorite ever comes along. It's a bit melodramatic and the name reflects a lot of different things. There's an innocent joy that sand castles capture because they let our imaginations wonder, wander, and let us build our make-believe empires. The name also captures the transient nature of life-sand castles don't last forever. I think it's an apt metaphor and this music is equal parts unadulterated happiness and melancholy for me. The bands featured include The Thoughts, Fort Frances, The National, The Joy Formidable, Wye Oak, Anton Franc, Mumford & [...]
To pigeonhole an artist like Thurston Moore would be to tragically overlook his seemingly endless list of releases, collaborators and projects. Produced by Beck Hansen, Moore's most recent release, Demolished Thoughts, is a true testament to his daunting musical genius: This is an album presented with the unyielding confidence and finesse of a true veteran mastermind. The tone is mellower than I expected – even more so than 2007 release, Trees Outside the Academy – dwelling mostly in the melancholy reservation that so wholly inhabits Hansen's own Sea Change (2002). [...]

Photo By: Diwang Valdez It's easy to get caught in a rut of weirdness when off guard and surrounded by robots. This could happen at any time of the day, relatively regardless of location. Suburbs, city, rural America – eerie activity exists; it's just something we Americans must deal with. Most people tune out the daily strangeness by focusing on how they project themselves to appear rather than ever considering how they are acting and what they're saying. Test it out, the next time you go to a place where [...]

Photo by G. Morrissey: The Queen is Alive. Democracy is Dead. Morrissey is getting a lot of bad press for speaking up on his feelings about the Queen and the Royal Family. I think he makes a pretty valid point and I am happy he is speaking up. Here's a bit of what Moz said from his article he wrote for Hot Press: "[The Queen] warned that any British people carrying anti-royal placards who are "seen in the vicinity of the royal wedding [...]

Why do we give our lives over to people who don't inspire? People, and things who down play, down grade, and suck creativity from our being... In the movies we watch. Is anything original anymore? There are so many remakes, sequels, ripped off rehashed ideas it's really hard to get excited about them anymore. Now I believe that creativity still lives, and breathes below the surface. For some reason this force is denied. Either by the creator or by someone with the power to squash this. I have come to realize that I give [...]

Today's been a weird day for me. I woke up to find out that one of my favorite bloggers, Zach Hart of We Listen For You, was calling it quits . WLFY was my introduction to music blogs, and while a lot of people have been taking his leave in stride, I'm still feeling a bit lost. Whether we agreed or not, WLFY is one of the most intellectually honest blogs out there. They were never afraid to call artists/bloggers out when they found fault. More importantly, they were one of the few blogs that strove to [...]

Tweet via The Big Picture On March 11th a deadly 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami devastated Northern Japan and has left the country paralyzed. The sights of towns being destroyed, and stories of people searching for their love ones has really broke my heart. I can only imagine that their sense of what was normal is now gone. A questions that came to mind was how can I help with the [...]

Tweet It's a been a while since we(the writers and contributors of Light Meets Night) have updated our site. No we're not dead it's just hard to balance to our lives as full-time students, full-time lovers and part-time bloggers. We're committed to this site and our goal still remain. What goal you ask? being the best damn blog we can be. Yes we have missed stories, news and features. There should of been of a full-blown write-up on a our trip to CES and [...]

Tweet I woke up Friday morning with news that Light Meets Night, our little blog here, was chosen by Vice as one of the top 21 blogs from the Vice Blog Network. I was surprise, happy and honored by the news because we started this blog four months ago not knowing how it would turn out and how things would be in the crazy world of blogs. It's definitely adds motivation to keep doing what we're doing and contribute as much as we can to the community of independently run blogs out there. Thank you Vice [...]

The Thoughts is a Seattle-based band made up of Ian Williams (vocals and guitar), Katie Mosehauer (violin and harp), and Katie Mosehauer (drums). The trio came about in 2007. Ian Williams and Jon Horwath, who have played together for a long time joined with Seattle violinist Katie Mosehauer. The band self-released their first album, Consider the Bear, in 2009. They tell their stories with a mix of savagery and sweetness, at times whispering honeyed words in the ear and at others wailing in reckless abandon. Undertows of graceful string harmonies are pitted against complex, impressionistic percussion in [...]

It's been a nightmare trying to sort out the goings-on at Dogs On Acid, with the new site redesign and all. I'm glad there have been some who continue to push-on and ride this out with us, as they get treats like this! Thought 's a producer I've been a fan of for a bit, and I'm glad he asked DOA to officially premiere the Bassline Agency's podcast, with a special, deadly mix from Thought himself. We go pretty heavy on the interview side, then roll out the mix - and a free tune, "Radial". Hit up this [...]
