Gavin [...]

Stranded, we gawk into the shadows of the Lair of the Minotaur. The only colour in this ruin is the ghostly glimmer of a golden chain we uncoil behind us, it connects us to the outside, or perhaps, across the millennia, to romantic audiences gawking into the shadows in the front-cover of a 4AD record, a gateway into this eternal lair where they are tempted by the glimpse of this golden chain we uncoil, thinking that love awaits, and instead awaits the Minotaur. This thing that we refer to as the Lair of the Minotaur has of course [...]
Dublin pair Thread Pulls are worth investing in a good pair of headphones. New single 'You Melt Words', backed with '5/8 Rhythm Here', feels both sparse and echoey, and packed at the same time. A palette of noises combine to make something that is intriguing, that you know shouldn't work, [Read more]
Dublin post-punk duo Thread Pulls is one of those bands that seems particularly sensitive to the fact that the fewer the sounds you use in a given production, the higher the impact of each one ... read more

Part four of my best albums of 2010 counts down numbers 40 to 31.

Thread Pulls are a two man band from Dublin, Ireland making minimalist Foals -y tracks. This is what my mother has to say about them, "That band sucks! It sounds like some kind of jungle....you know.....tribal kind of crap." She is from New Jersey by way of Brooklyn and her fave bands are AC/DC and Iron Maiden. Personally, I think they sound kind of like Spacemen 3 , IMO, one of the best bands ever. Maybe a little like Spacemen 3 plus some kind of jungle....you know...tribal kind of crap. Also, have you [...]

The leaves are tumbling and sometimes you can smell turf burning on the breeze. I'm on mid-term break from my school job and forcing myself to find little things to enjoy during this steely October before what will probably be the most grim and austere Christmas we will experience in a generation - what with that front-loaded budget of pain to pile-drive us all further into the murk. So, I try to look upwards. The ground is all mud anyway. And the fallen leaves in Kells are uniformly diseased. They mostly come off the trees green, which seems odd at [...]
The opening track on New Thoughts , 'How To Talk', contains a little bit of everything that Thread Pulls bring to the table. Unrelenting drums, throbbing bass, modal trumpet sounds and stark, oddly lazy vocals; it's all there. Over the course of this, their debut album, the two-piece expand on these same sounds and make a great case for the creative benefit of limitations. Thread Pulls are possessed of a regimental, no-frills approach that is rare in a band of their ilk. With every song coming in under the five-minute mark, they have resisted the [...]

Billed as 'a tour of legitimate sharing', rhizome[s] features three like minded musical acts, all of whom have been forming rhizomatic connections resulting in collaborations, remixes, one-off events and so on. The tour brings them together for a series of shows with collaboration at the heart of it. With work shared in advance of the concerts, each act will present their own sets yet each performance will also feature collaborations between the artists developed for the tour. Tomorrow night (Wednesday 29th) sees Thread Pulls, Dinah Brand, Richer Than Astronauts and Little Beauties play live in Whelan’s at a tribute night for Derrick Dalton. The night marks the second anniversary of Derrick's death, and the posthumous release of two records, an LP by his solo project Aeromodeller and a 7” single by his band Crumb. Derrick played in Hey Paulette and Mexican Pets before forming Crumb, who released the LP Evenings and Weekends in 2005. The new Crumb 7” Like Goodbye features two songs (on red vinyl) that were completed by Dez [...]
Sometimes less is more and that is certainly the case for Thread Pulls . This two-piece make one hell of a racket and the sheer, bodily force of the sounds they concoct is in full effect for the launch of their debut album, New Thoughts , in The Workman's Club. Consisting solely of bass, drums and a cacophony of looped trumpet and vocals, they draw on many of the same krautrock influences that so inspire fellow Dublin rhythm merchants Twin Kranes. While never as fearfully intimidating as their motorik brethren, they are more dynamic and more loose in [...]

The sound that Thread Pulls have crafted on their debut album New Thoughts is motorik, minimalistic and mantric. Built on a foundation of repetitious drum hits and bass notes, this basis allows Gavin Duffy and Peter Maybury to employ the use of ambient drones, seemingly free-form vocals, unconventional instrumentation and extra percussion. It's a record you let seep into you. Sample three tracks from the record below. Thread Pulls' album launch party takes place this Friday in The Workman's Club with support from Logikparty & DJ Monty (Roller/Sparkers). Tickets are €12.50. [...]

Right now we are at the chrysalis stage, an as yet undisclosed shape metamorphosing inside a pulsating cocoon, perhaps to become Slake Moths, feast on human, animal and xenian souls, and shit bad dreams over the spires of New Crobuzon. Or maybe something else. Stare at the black slate that we are and wonder what [...]
