I nearly typed 'Lice in Edinburgh This Week' in that post title, which actually rather amused me. Just in case you wondered. Anyhow, wildly entertaining typo anecdotes aside, I have some exciting stuff to tell you about this week, although most of it is Toad stuff, honestly. The awesomeness of The Leg's album launch could only be outdone by something pretty fucking special, to be honest, and although Neu Reekie will probably have a good go, I still back The Leg. This is going to be bloody brilliant. And if you want to earn some karmic [...]

Only at SXSW can you manage to travel to multiple countries in a span of a couple hours. Well, not literally of course, but it is possible to see bands from many different corners of the globe in one afternoon. I achieved this in just hours on the club-filled Sixth Street, followed swiftly by the Discovering Scotland showcase at Latitude 30. Sixth Street is every bit as legendary as the tourist trap t-shirts that advertise its amazingness. Everywhere you turn, you will either run into a band hanging out, playing [...]

With my previous music festival experiences, time proved to be my greatest enemy. At SXSW this year, I found a new foe: distance. While I'm a native Washingtonian and our town ranks in the top 10 of most walkable American cities, even I was flagging after day 2 in Austin. When you're subsisting on less than 4 hours of sleep per night, dehydrated and hungry, all signs point to you not crossing the road to meet Adam (Duritz of Counting Crows , whose name was on a sign I spotted [...]
The South by Southwest madness has already started here in Austin with the Film and Interactive festivals and SXSW Music officially starts on Wednesday. From various sources I have compiled a list of 59 Scottish gigs over the next few days. My head is already spinning. Some caveats on this list. First of all, day [...]
The 2012 SXSW Music Festival kicks off next week with 12 Scottish bands set to invade Austin. Unfortunately the weather forecast suggests that they may be bringing the Scottish weather with them. Nevertheless I'm sure that the barbeques will still be fired up and the margaritas will still flow. On Monday we'll publish the full [...]

Another year, another astonishing array of releases to get you through January to December. But where last year had some very clear cut winners across the board (from the likes of Arcade Fire, Kanye West and LCD Soundsystem), this year has not appeared so obvious. But, better late than never, Hotcakes brings you an eclectic list carefully decided by our five writers. Enjoy! 30. Givers - In Light 29. Balam Acab - Wander / Wonder 28. The Black Keys - El Camino 27. Gui Boratti - III [...]

Earlier today the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) updated its list of showcasing artists for the 2012 music event. Included in that announcement are the first two Scottish bands who are expected to make the trip to Austin next March - Laki Mera and Three Blind Wolves. More below. Regular readers will know that as [...]

Touring with the likes of Frightened Rabbit has done wonders for Glasgow quartet Three Blind Wolves and their debut album which has a nice mixture of gruff folk and indie rock (think Conor Oberst meets The Tallest Man On Earth). Sound of The Storm is a seven track album that explores the band's possibilities from R&B "Hopeless Romantic" which has a tinge of The Love Language sound, the more rambunctious and driving "Echo On The Night Train" to the breathy ballad "Emily Rose". Three Blind Wolves has a song that can appease everyone. Give [...]

I reviewed Three Blind Wolves' Sound of The Storm back in May and compare their sound to a blend of Frightened Rabbit, Mumford and Sons, and Frontier Ruckus. The band hails from Scotland and, thanks to a tremendous debut and a tour with Frightened Rabbit, they are garnering some buzz in the UK. The band has graciously allowed us to offer Sound of The Storm as a free download . Grab it while you can. Three Blind [...]

Festival Season makes us a little bit insatiable here at Muso's Guide. We've already had Natalie Shaw's review of the festival, but we were so excited about T in the Park, we sent two writers. Here's Steve McGillivray's perspective on the festivities... [...]

Three Blind Wolves are the top of my list of music discoveries this year. The Glasgow band is making a name for themselves in their native Scotland and their debut album, Sound On The Storm , is sure to be a head-turner in the States. Their sound is a blend of Frightened Rabbit, Mumford and Sons, and Frontier Ruckus. The album in my possession lists songs out of order, but the first song I heard was the uptempo"Black Bowl Park." It's a song that chugs along with surf-inspired guitar over rapid percussion, ending in a guitar finale [...]
Glasgow has seen a number of indie bands form in the past few years including Glasvegas , Dananananaykroyd and Frightened Rabbit. Now it sees host to something new: Three Blind Wolves , a four piece who state their influences as "the great outdoors" and who write beautiful music. They've just signed to Communion Records. It's hard to pin this band down to sounding like something. If I were one for pigeonholing I would say that they are a lot like, well, any indie band that has [...]

This weeks round up of the tracks that I haven't had the space to post... Shoresh From: Israel Old school crooning from the owner and proprieter of one of the most well known music venues in Israel, The Pitrya. Go Try MP3 - Shoresh - Ghost Town [...]

The other day I got myself embroiled in quite a heated discussion when a cohort of mine said he was sick of the Mumfordisation of music. That was a new term to me; it rather rankled as not only do I think Mumford & Son's have been a breath of fresh air and paid their dues through Communion, they give back to the grass roots of music. At this point, I have lost count of the amount of great artists that have taken off via the Communion compilation album released last March. You might wonder what this [...]
