I whip my hair back and forth. Not because I am a teenage girl (although I sometimes act like one) but because there is a party. No, it's not in my pants. This party is in my ears, and soon it will be in yours as well. I am pleased to present to you The Indie Sabbath - more refreshing than an ice-cold soda in the middle of the desert. For me, music is the purest form of communication this world has to offer. I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. [...]

Way back during the formative period of the Paper Crane Collective, I signed on to feature a monthly mix called Something for Later . The name of the mix came from a folder I use for tracks that didn't quite make it into the Dadada's monthly mix ( Blogophilia ) or something that was a little unusual deemed for a different kind of mix. Well, my hard drive is full of mp3s in folders marked Something For Later . Making a mix from these folders was an easy decision. This month's mix features tracks posted to our blogs and others [...]

[ download ] [tweetmeme] Three years after they released their debut full-length, Through the Sparks are gearing up to debut their sophomore effort, Worm Moon Waning , this coming Tuesday on Skybucket Records . The Birmingham, Alabama based quintet's new record picks up where 20072s Lazarus Beach left off, filled with brilliant compositions which make friendly neighbors to the music of Sea Wolf, The Minus 5, The Chamber Strings, and Jay Bennett. Songs like the engrossing "Buddy Holly's Gun" carry a slight twang without every really stepping [...]
Its seems like more and more emails pile up in the ol' CoS mailbox everyday. Of course, while this is bad news for us (the work day just keeps getting longer and lonnnnggeer), it's good news for you. Said emails often include links and streams to the week's best new singles, remixes, and covers, and, because more emails means more links and stream, the length of our weekly Friday Mixtape also seems to growing beyond our wildest imagination. See, I told you it was good news... for you! Enjoy! (I'm going to now go and answer more emails). [...]

on first listen, birmingham's through the sparks can be a bit of tough pill to swallow. not cause the songs aren't great, cause they really are if you just give em time, but they are kinda all over the board, musically. they are definitely a band that you cant stuff into neat little genre box that may or may not have been made up by some douchebag that just so happens to be "lucky" enough to have a computer and an internet connection. they're giving away their latest worm moon waning for free. well, for mostly free, you [...]

I have to admit, most my experiences with neighbors have been either benign or horrible, not many have been the type to greet new residents with freshly baked cake, it's more along the lines of a reminder which trash cans are mine, to make sure to keep my garbage out of their bins. It's quite a difference from the childhood Welcome Wagon visits I remember my family receiving. Nowadays, I'm happy if my neighbors are quiet enough to falcilate sleep. I don't think I'll ever get over the tramua of being sandwiched in a studio apartment [...]

Friday night's Next Big Nashville festivities got started with free booze and killer views at the pre-show reception at ICON. After two hours spent comparing notes with bloggers and band members, and getting an early start on the evening's drinking, it was definitely a good night to take advantage of the free shuttle service. I'm happy to report that they only missed on their "every 15 minutes" promise once. It's definitely the best way to get around at NBN, especially since Metro's finest were seen out in full force throughout the weekend. [...]

Friday's a little bit tamer than Thursday's schedule - there are eleven showcases to choose from instead of fifteen, but the festival makes up for it with the first of two official after parties at City Hall. Friday's after party is sponsored by Red Bull and features The Dynamites , and I'm pretty sure everyone's going to end up there at the end of the night. But before that, you've got your work cut out for you deciding what to see. The Cannery has a great lineup - including Kindercastle , Cortney [...]
The Note Books series features musicians discussing their literary side. Past contributors have included John Darnielle , John Vanderslice , and others. Later this month I am moving to Birmingham (Alabama, not England), and the thriving indie music scene in the city has me excited. The city's music renaissance is in large part due to Skybucket Records is home to the Dexateens , 13ghosts , and Through the Sparks . Pitchfork called Through the Sparks' latest album, Lazarus Beach [...]
Here's another small selection of "indie-rock" (I think I'll start calling it mouse rock) mp3s. If you like the songs, you'll probably like the CDs. Carbon/Silicon - The Last Post - What The Fuck... **Click on the link to read the full post, download mp3s, and comment.**
Okay, all week long I've been pointing you in the direction of excellent shows happening here in town, but seriously pay attention to this one, because it is absolutely hands-down my concert pick of the week . Tonight, French Kicks and Through the Sparks are playing at The Basement at 9 p.m., and you can check out the show for $8. I'll gush about how much I love French Kicks in a second, but first let's talk about Through the Sparks . It was a pleasant [...]

It's a shame I've kept this band to myself so long, because they've really been one of my favorite musical discoveries this summer. Through The Sparks has a simmering pop sound mixing doses of piano, synths, and other pretty instruments with a more conventional guitar rock sound. The results are pretty spectacular, the album (titled Lazarus Beach ) contains far more hits than it does misses. The biggest highlight for me is the second track, "Mexico (Every Last Buffalo)". Lyrically, the song cleverly tackles American imperialism in the space-age and musically, it sounds like a [...]
