I awoke this morning not to a hot skillet of eggs and bacon, but to this article on Yahoo's front page asking whether or not Kobe Bryant is a better basketball player than His Airness, Michael Jordan. I probably would have preferred the eggs and bacon, but since I'm a sports nut, this sort of debate in the morning is suffice enough for me to settle for lukewarm coffee and Cheerios. SPORTS Kobe vs. Michael: The Debate Continues An article or two back, Steve [...]

The stuff I get sent in the mail directly from bands is hit-or-miss and often sides on the miss side. It's albums like Sun Come Undone from Baltimore-bred Thrushes though, that make it worth opening the mailbox every day. There's many bands these days who put shades of both post-rock and shoegaze into their music and Thrushes have seemed to come up with a healthy balance. They have that element of explosive guitars, rumbling drums and a loud-soft-loud dynamic, but it's done in a reverb-heavy shoegaze environment. Another thing going for the band are the beautiful vocals from Anna Connor. [...]
When looking for up-and-coming bands that interpret the early 1990s shoegaze/post punk sound, it is very important to take a few moments to get a feel for the band beyond any type of "hit song" or recommended listening from most music blogger "resources". I get numerous MySpace friend requests and emails from math rock (is that still a genre?) bands and it makes me sick. I know it

Thrushes are a band from Baltimore, MD. While they have only been together for about a year, they sound like a band that has been together much longer. They are preparing to release their debut album, which gives a hint a of their capabilities. In the meantime, they will be playing several one off dates in the area. Acquaint yourself with them now, before they become the next big Baltimore band. To give you an idea, they were nice enough to talk about their plans for 2007 and give a preview of the forthcoming release. [...]
