"Kissing the Beehive" by Wolf Parade which clocks in at 10:53. The Schmidt Sting Pain Index is a pain scale rating the relative pain caused by different Hymenopteran stings (wasps, bees, ants, etc.). The index starts from 0 for stings that are completely ineffective against humans and finishes at 4 for the most painful stings. In the original study, some descriptions of the most painful examples were given, e.g.: "Paraponera clavata stings induced immediate, excruciating pain and numbness to pencil-point pressure, as well as trembling in the form of a totally [...]

"Six Days At The Bottom Of The Ocean" by Explosions In The Sky which clocks in at 8:43. If Olympic subplots of human rights violations and superhuman quests for eight gold medals haven't really been doing it for you, perhaps you'd rather peruse the torrent of self-reflexive, media-focused stories polluting newswires like smog on the Beijing skyline. Welcome to the "Metalympics." Here you'll find some of the following topics of varying urgency and importance: NBC is doing an admirable job in expanding its Olympic coverage, NBC will undoubtedly do a [...]

On the drive home from the A Wilhelm Scream show (see previous post) I was, needless to say, tired as a hound dog. But an iced cappucino and a packet of Skittles could only do so much and the seven or eight albums on the lone mp3 CD in the car was getting a bit rote after a couple of hours. Once we got close enough to Brandon (two hours from Winnipeg, three from Regina), I knew what would keep me at attention. I went to school there for broadcast media training, and part of our course was [...]

Photo by Bill Shouldis Our writer Leah interviewed Thursday lead singer Geoff Rickly last year before the band's show at the TLA in Philadelphia. Since that interview, there has been plenty of activity in the band's camp. They announced a split EP with Japanese hardcore heroes Envy , due out this fall on Temporary Residence . The band played a triumphant show with Hot Water Music and Paint It Black at NYC's Terminal 5 in July. Now, plans for a new full-length [...]

"The Choisest View" by Modern English which clocks in at 11:40. Modern English is a band you know because of one perfect song, and it's not this one. That song, "I Melt With You", is three and a half minutes of '80s pop perfection. This song, "The Choisest View", is a nearly twelve minute adventure into the realm early New Order before there even was an early New Order. It's dark English New Wave moodiness to the extreme, and it's not half-bad if that's your kinda thing. I happen to love the track, but that's [...]

"Hurricane" by Bob Dylan which clocks in at 8:33. We are very happy to announce the addition of a new EAR FARM staff member. Her name is Beatrice and you'll be reading more from her in the near future. To begin with, we've got an 8+ from one of her all-time favorite artists. "Here comes the story of the Hurricane, The man the authorities came to blame For somethin' that he never done. Put in a prison cell, but one time he coulda been [...]

Photos by Bill Shouldis Thursday 's show with Hot Water Music and Paint It Black on Saturday was the band's first official gig in NYC in nearly two years. You could tell it had been a while because as soon as the lights dimmed and the band walked on stage, a ton of kids starting going bonkers. They even debuted a new song from their upcoming split release with Envy. Check out more photos after the jump.

As many have noted, this past weekend in New York was the greatest "punk rock" weekend in sometime. Saturday night alone saw performances across the city from Hot Water Music , Alkaline Trio , Circle Jerks , Dillinger 4 , American Steel , Paint It Black , Thursday , Trash Talk and more. If only they had made a huge festival out of this. As you can tell by the headline, we caught the Hot Water Music reunion show which had support from Thursday and Paint It [...]

As we said below, Thursday is playing a huge show with Hot Water Music and Paint It Black at Terminal 5 in NYC this weekend. Along with all the excitement that comes with HWM's return to the Big Apple, It's also Thursday first official show in the city in nearly two years. We talked to Geoff a few months ago , but I had a chance to talk with him recently about the show, the infamous Warped Tour 2006 incident in Long Island, and the new full-length. Stay tuned for all of that and the rest [...]

Why did everyone and their mother book an awesome show this weekend? Let's rattle them off. The almighty Hot Water Music return to NYC. The lineup includes New Jersey's Thursday and Late Night Wallflower favorites Paint It Black . The show goes down at the huge, 3,000 cap. Terminal 5. Alkaline Trio and American Steel are playing a sold out show at Irving [...]

"Apparition et scène de Myrtha" composed by Adolphe Adam , performed by Wiener Philharmoniker (with Herbert von Karajan conducting) which clocks in at 11:42. I don't understand many things. And if you don't mind, I'll skip the witty culturally referential starter course list of some of them and get right to the matter at hand: I don't get people who situate themselves as "music lovers" but yet won't venture within 100 yards of anything classical, jazz, or generally made outside of North America and Europe - the so called "world music". [...]

This just in: "Thursday have been fans of the Japanese experimental outfit Envy for some time now. Thursday decided it was time to team up with both Envy and it's label Temporary Residence (Explosions In The Sky, Mono, By The End Of Tonight) to release a split LP+CD. There is no street date for the release yet but the label is eyeing Sept/Oct as a timeline. The LP and CD will be packaged and sold together as one piece and will only be found in independent retail stores. There will also be a [...]

Yeah we're a day late, so what? Wanna fight about it? Both Sasha and I both made resolutions this year: Sasha pledged to listen to more punk rock, and mine is to be more destructive. Don't ask. Here's wishing you and your family/dog/cat/iguana/fish/oth er pets a safe and happy 2008! Mp3: Thursday - Jet Black New Year The Lawrence Arms - 100 Resolutions Bedouin Soundclash - New Year's Day Buy: Soundclash Larry Arms [...]

Every once in a while, I like to look back at an album that has stood the test of time. A relatively short test (just four years in this case), but Thursday 's War All The Time (which shares a title with a Charles Bukowski book) is still the essential screamo record for me, perhaps second only to its predecessor, Full Collapse . And as a post-hardcore record in the midst of a plagued subgenre, to critics Thursday either are the best band in their little community or the least terrible one. [...]

The screamoholics leave major label, Island, and are unsure of what the next step will be. Billboard reports: Rock outfit Thursday has left Island Records, according to a post on its MySpace.com site. "It was a difficult decision and it took us the better part of six months to come to an agreement with the label but now that we have both of us are very happy with how things have turned out," the band writes. Thursday's Island debut, 2003's "War all the Time," had sold 364,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen [...]

Murder By Death , Thursday , Fear Before The March of Flames and Heavy Heavy Low Low will be touring together early next year on the Strhess Tour. Murder by Death released a fantastic album earlier this year, In Bocca al Lupo , and Thursday, well, I will always have a place in my heart for them for my more mascara-lined days (figuratively speaking). Dates: [...]
