Thurston Moore - Trees Outside The Academy ( Ecstatic Peace ) A well-intended document that feels complete even in this unadorned state.

The new Thurston Moore record is pretty well done. He gets all acoustic which is a nice change and the songs have very minimal noise in them which makes them very 'accessible' - to steal a phrase from a friend. Noise rock has never been my thing, (see all of Mark's posts) but I have always wanted to like Thurston's stuff as opposed to just respecting it. Now I do. Granted this record sounds like it was written at the same time as Sonic Youth's Rather Ripped , but I like that album so that [...]

If ever a man was made to do the job he does it is Thurston Moore. Seemingly ageless his slacker sense of style never looks awkward on a man who is well into his late forties. His band Sonic Youth have enough songs to fill a decent sized hard drive and for the most part the quality is high. Despite a deep groundswell of love for the group they have never moved beyond the sidelines, in fact at

thurston moore - silver blue (mp3) so this week i was lucky enough to see mountain of one play a 45 minutes of what could only be described as brain-bending-intensity. our party went off without much of a hitch, and afterwards was a blur of great disco, free baltika overflowing throughout and the covering of fire lights. the real highlight of the weekend however came on saturday night, when mo morris, he of mountain of one fame, once again pushed common's world class sound system to it's limits with this, from thurston [...]

We're here again, now with a new name: Thursday Tunes . The number of songs will vary from post to post, - twelve, twenty or two or even something that doesn't start on a T... Here are this week's Thursday Tunes, all of them found somewhere on bandsites, labelsites, promosites or magazine-sites on the internet. This week's Thursday Tunes is a super-edition , with great music from The Lucksmiths, Tullycraft, Iron & Wine, Susanna, British Sea Power, Sea Wolf, Athlete, Magnet, Office, Ok Ikumi, Love like fire, The Most Serene Republic, Ugress, Maritime, Thurston Moore, Sally Shapiro, [...]

Now, I love Sonic Youth, but I've always been a Lee Ranaldo man. When I heard Thurston Moore was putting out a solo album of songwriter style material rather than the free/noise/jamz he does so often these days, I was a bit skeptical. 1995's Psychic Hearts , his last solo songwriter album, kinda blew a little bit. Thurston is a good songwriter, but I wasn't sure he would have enough material after last years Sonic Youth album. But Trees Outside the Academy ended up being pretty damn great. Thurston's [...]

I'm afraid my new release posts are getting the short end of my attention span of late, with all the writing demands that have come my way via Film.com . It's a big day for 'New Folk' and I'm going to take the (still not very) easy way out here and refer to my post yesterday on new releases from Jose Gonzalez and Devendra Banhart , while focusing here releases from Iron & Wine , Two Gallants , and the solo debut from A.A. Bondy . There's folk then [...]

Another week, another big day of album releases. You have to love the fall for that. Let's get right into it. Stars - In Our Bedroom After the War The band actually leaked the album themselves months ago - to legitimate download services and I think Insound has had it available for a while as well, but the official release date is today. It's a wonderful album, filled with the kind of orchestral theatrics we have grown accustomed to [...]

One more from the fertile two-night stand R.E.M. had in Feb '05 at Dublin's Point Theatre, standing as proof that people love hits. Unlike the other clips from the gigs, all of which will be stitched together on the forthcoming R.E.M. Live CD/DVD, this one brings the crowd into it, emphasizing the obvious point that "Man On The Moon" was kinda sort of a smash in Ireland. Where " I Took Your Name " and " Leaving New York "'s cam angles mirror Michael's introverted lyrics, here Stipe tickles the cheap seats, pantomiming apples beaning heads, pointing in [...]

You'll have to forgive the tardiness (and sloppiness) this week. I've been on an offsite since this weekend discussing process (and drinking,) and haven't been on a computer or listening to new music. This week's releases feature Broken Social Scene 's Kevin Drew , Sonic Youth 's Thurston Moore , Rogue Wave , Hard-Fi and Les Savy Fav . The last is the most intriguing , but it's the first two that interest me right now, and they're both highlighted by the guitar of Dinosaur Jr 's [...]
Here we are again with a new week and another avalanche of new album releases. Starting off with some notable solo efforts with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth , Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene , and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam all releasing albums this week. Other highlights this week include albums from Rogue Wave , Les Savy Fav , Akron/Family , and Ben Lee . Most of which you can samples for below. What else is out this week that I may [...]
I could write about Thurston Moore's new album or something, but I'd rather just share this link from Girl Talk's blog about meeting Thurston Moore : One time two weekends ago, I met Thurston Moore. I told him that I sampled his music without asking for permission and sold it on a legitimately produced CD called Night Ripper. He had never heard of the album, but he said, "That's cool, man." When we stopped talking, he was all alone, and then he played air guitar for a few seconds and made these [...]
