An unusual double feature today, combining our two most popular focusing strategies: covers of, and covers by, a folkworld artist with whom the average folkfan is only partially or anecdotally familiar. As with all those who we tout, our feature subject deserves to rise above the constant chatter, to be celebrated for his songwriting and performance. But in this case, the man is so prolific, it seemed appropriate to go for the omnibus approach. To be fair, though I had long planned to take on the collected coverage of Bonnie [...]

Sunday night I trekked out to Death by Audio to catch The Wailing Wall with Tiger Saw, Lazarus, and Unbunny. If your guilt free pleasure is going to a venue that looks like a basement in a gritty squat, this is the place for you. There was a weak turn out of about 15 people. At the same time, this gave an intimate feeling that's foreign at most NYC shows.Unbunny was pared down to
I've not been feeling well this week - not one bit. Everyone around me has been getting sick (just that time of the year?) and my immune system has been working in overdrive - so here's to hoping I avoid that pesky swine sickness ravaging the populations. Aside from chicken noodle soup and some Airborne , nothing should make me feel better than a dosage of Thursdays and Covers! This week I'm paying homage to Jared and going back to the lovely lesser knowns. [MP3] [...]

First off, before you go see any live music tonight, be sure to catch the lunar eclipse. Sometimes nature has the best performances. After that head on down to the Ottobar to check out Akrobatik with Snapz, Make Shift Deluxe, and T.M.F.. Akrobatik is a great MC with a flow and mentality similar to KRS One (though still worlds apart) and should provide a great show. If hip hop and Baltimore aren't in your sights, maybe Black Mountain and Bon Iver will do the trick in Philly at Johnny Brenda's . Or [...]

Newburyport indie-folk vet (and ex-Phoenix tourblogger) Dylan Metrano has cobbled together yet another fantastic cast for the latest Tiger Saw disc, Tigers on Fire . Check the liner notes to figure out which parts Casey Dienel, Jason Anderson, and the Ponies in the Surf folks played. As Metrano tells Jeff Breeze in this week's fishwrap, their last album was about getting kids to sing along, and this one's about making people dance: "our basement soul record," as he puts it. You can click here to read the article , or if you're feeling all hi-tech and [...]

1. Cop that Mission of Burma product . 2. If you've ever seen Eli "Paperboy" Reed play a live set, you've probably thought to yourself, "Damn, I'd like to download that kid's record collection." Next best thing: he guest-deejayed and spun a shitload of really rare records on PJ's "Galactic Fractures" show, which you can, in turn, download. Bonus beats at the end by PJ, who gets on [...]
