Anyone out there remember the Lucksmiths song Detective Agency from their album the Green Bicycle Case? New Seattle band Detective Agency don't sound anything like that Australian band, but that was the kind of my logic going on in my head when I clicked on a link to listen to them a few months ago. Better points of reference would be Tiger Trap , Ramones , Tuscadero and perhaps the Shop Assistants . Up until last week they had a few songs floating around the internet. I [...]

Words by Rick Moslen I recently overheard some old lady on the bus spew some nonsense about how 2012 marks the end of the world. Maybe she's a Glenn Beck fanatic or the wife of some cult leader, but she was more-than-likely confusing "end of the world" with 2012's other important event: "the 30th anniversary of K Records"—obviously. Avoiding aging traits like receding hairlines, bedwetting, and excessive ear hair, the graceful label still holds its charm thanks to an array of hip songwriters ( Karl Blau, Mirah, Atlas Sound, Jeremy Jay ), [...]
After the long stint in Tiger Trap, Go Sailor, The Softies and her solo project, Rose Melberg is back at it with a full band with Vancouver's Brave Irene. The band contains the same elements that have drawn the indie pop community to her work throughout the years. And till this day, she still garners [...]

Tiger Trap was the first band fronted by Rose Melberg , the best singer in the universe . The quartet was active only briefly in the early '90s, releasing an EP and a full-length. I've had the LP on heavy rotation for the last few months. Here's one of my favourites from that album, "Words and Smiles." It's an unrequited love song that's equal parts hopeful and poignant. The drums are bouncy and the fuzzy surf licks are gorgeous, but there's no mistaking the desperation in the lyrics, as Rose sings, "I won't tell [...]
In 2006 it seemed like Matthew Adam Hart would soon reach prolific status. Hart's flurry of successful remixes and the release of The Russian Futurists' '05 gem, Our Thickness, suggested that he could become the next Matthew Herbert of sorts, a musical entrepreneur with refined innovation even beyond his specialized niche of electronica. Our Thickness [...]

Tiger Trap were like a shooting star, they burned brightly, but only very briefly. The band split after releasing one full length album, an EP and a few scattered singles and compilation tracks during 1992 and 1993. I first became aware of the band when they released a 7" single as part of K Records' International Pop Underground series. Two of the songs featured on the single ("Supercrush" and "You And Me") later appeared on their debut album, which is available for download from the usual sources , but a third track, "Hiding" did not. Tiger [...]

**I LOVE this skirt! I am awesome! I managed to miss posting about the holidays this year, I also managed to not post any year-end lists once again this year. I think 2009 was a wash, I'm glad to see it go for many reasons. The last few months have been difficult for me for a variety of reasons but 2010 is a new year, a new decade and I suppose a new start (again), and thus far things seem to be going pretty darn well. [...]
Rose Melberg found fierceness in Tiger Trap and even more fierceness in softness with the Softies before beginning a solo career early in this millennium. Her new album Homemade Ship is out now on K and she speaks on Sunday morning from her mother's house. This interview by Chris Ziegler.

Last year's totallyblogtastic band, Vivian Girls are releasing their sophomore album on In The Red on September 8th, 2009. It is entitled Everything Goes Wrong . This is the latest in Wipers -inspired Tiger Trap -esque indierock. Reportedly , the band took "their time" and doubled their recording time compared to their last album. This translates to a whole six days. Listen to the results... Downloadable: When I'm Gone (mp3) Preorder Everything Goes Wrong ... here . Upcoming Dates: Aug 25 [...]

The new All Girl Summer Fun Band! The leaves are just beginning to fall and the air is chillier and starting to smell really good – and the new record from The All Girl Summer Fun Band could not have possibly come at a better time! Looking Into It , the band's 3rd full-length (their first without summer fun girl Ari Douangpanya, and first to be self-released through their AGSFBmusic label), sees the girls moving into a slightly more rocking direction. Somewhat gone are the cutesy songs of old, and instead what we [...]

Let's travel back in time to an era before the internet. A time when things like discovering new music wasn't a click away. I've been obsessed with music since I was 3 years old. Any early memory I have is associated with music somehow. Lucky for me, I was the last of 5 kids so I was exposed to A LOT of different types of music while growing up. My mom spoiled me with Motown. Not all of my siblings were so kind - a lot of Journey, Hall & Oates, disco, and Top 40 in the late 70s and [...]

Photo by David Greenwald Also known as the Rob Gordon "Not at Coachella" Shuffle . Oh well. Maybe next year. The Softies - "Holiday in Rhode Island": mp3 I finally figured this out on guitar the other day after meaning to for years. For those interested: Amaj7, Fmaj7 in the verses, and then G, C, Fmaj7 (3x) Em, Bbmaj7 in the chorus. Major 7th chords are my favorite chords. The Softies are probably my favorite band. There's a correlation here. [...]
