I missed a lot of class during my junior and senior years of high school. My friends and I, much like the prison escapees Gail and Evelle in Raising Arizona , felt that the institution no longer had anything to offer us. (especially now that we were mobile) We had our escapes down to a science. We worked through some office connections to erase any evidence that we had been absent or I would provide faked doctor's notes using the nom de plume Dr. A.E. Lifeson, DDS, an homage to the [...]

Yes, though I might recently have questioned Morgan Freeman's aquarium-related advice , I find the words of his iconic character Red from The Shawshank Redemption appropriate this morning. In less than three hours, the true opening round of the NCAA men's college basketball tournament - as opposed to the cash grab "first four" - tips off. For the first time in many years, I have arranged to be home to bask in ten hours or so of college hoops, the entire venture goosed by having upgraded to HD television. [...]
![Katie Mullins – "Pastoral" – self-released [Speed Round #8]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2286495_lg.jpg)
Katie Mullins - "Pastoral" There's little doubt: I was avoiding Pastoral . I don't know who Puppini Sisters are; I don't know who the FUCK Lucinda Black Bear is, nor do I know who Katie Mullins , herself, is. What to do? Thing is, most of Pastoral is fairly solid. (In unrelated news, I'm thinking about Dan Fogelberg 's "Leader of the Band" right now [...]
Solo artists and bands that get voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are usually legends, the kings and queens of popular music that generations of fans have grown up with. And while acts like Bob Dylan and The Beatles already call the hall home, it seems as if we're running out of iconic stars as the organizers behind the hall are talking changing the biggest entrance criteria. According to Showbiz411.com (via Spinner ), Jann Wenner (who heads the hall when he isn't busy running Rolling Stone ) wants [...]
When it was released in 2000, the critical acclaim for Bachelor No. 2 was immediate and fawning. Now, 10 years after the fact, it's a perfect time to look back at Mann's opus, via a song-by-song review.

Aimee Mann is one of the best song-writers of our time. She started in the 80's, guest appearing on songs with rock band Rush and then started her own band Til Tuesday, who also won a MTV VMA back in '85. Good thing Kanye wasn't around back then to ruin it. I got my first introduction to Aimee's music in 1999 when P.T. Anderson used her cinematic songs to score his film Magnolia . Her songs tug at your heartstrings and her voice is so damn smooth. She lulls you to sleep with lullabies of doom and despair. Plus [...]
Back, then, from a weekend down memory lane - or down Lark Lane, certainly - and this catches my eye: Yup, MGMT covering Til Tuesday. Whoever would have thought? [Thanks to You Ain't No Picasso where I found this]
Without a doubt, one of the most enduring images from the videos of the '80s is that of 'Til Tuesday singer Aimee Mann, rising from her seat in a theater and belting out the song Voices Carry to the dismay of her abusive boyfriend. Although the band, broke up less than three years after that smash, it remains a classic video and song from the period. Led by Berklee School Of Music student Mann, 'Til Tuesday formed from the ashes of the Boston band The Young Snakes. The band's triumph in a battle of the bands [...]
When I'm sick, I fall down the YouTube rabbit hole more often than usual -- which is why last weekend I found myself watching old live footage of 'Til Tuesday, Aimee Mann's '80s band. I made the bold ... Continue reading "Video: Til Tuesday, "Maybe Monday" + "Voices Carry" Live at the Ritz, New York City, 1985" >

Grace Jones Voices of Angels 80's edition observations. *Grace Jones scares the hell out of me. 2nd only to Rupaul. *Grammy-winning " Betty Davis Eyes " lyrics suggest that the song is about a drugged-out Ho (see lyrics). *" Voices Carry " is a guilty pleasure, I actually owned the cassette. Lyrics are almost as depressing as Suzanne Vega's " Luka" (see lyrics). *I don't remember " Girlie Girlie ", [...]

"Monday Monday, can't trust that day. Every other day of the week is fine, yeah, but whenever Monday comes (but whenever Monday comes) you can find me cryin' all of the time." - The Mamas & the Papas Here is EAR FARM's cure: some nicely arranged, melancholic yet upbeat, New Wave music to mend those Monday blues. Since Indie Mom and I have a date this Friday with Aimee Mann ( 2nd Annual Christmas show at the El Rey Theater ), I'm reminded of Til Tuesday , the band with which she gained her first foothold in popular music due in large part to a popular MTV video in which the singer finally and literally stands up for herself in an abusive relationship. Interestingly, "Voices Carry" was not the band's first choice to be the single from their 1984 debut album of the same name, but it was the only Til Tuesday song [...]
Ok, as the title says these are bands that were formed in the year 1983. All the tracks are most likely not from that year (although all tracks were released sometime in the 80's) however; the band started in that year. My favorites out of this batch are General Public, Wire Train and Beat Farmers (who I saw live in the 80's while living in Dallas). Check em all out and enjoy! mp3 Big Rock Candy Mountain ( Beat Farmers ) mp3 No More War ( [...]
