Filed under: News , Exclusive Tara Novak London-based independent label Xtra Mile Recordings is heading to North America after a decade in business, bringing an excellent roster of rock acts to our shores. To commemorate this milestone, folk/punk rocker and Xtra Mile artist Frank Turner has graciously written about his favorite 10 albums from the label (which happens to be run by his manager, Charlie Caplowe). To sweeten the pot, Xtra Mile is offering a free [...]

As you might have guessed, I spend a lot of my time listening to acoustic music. The majority of which is great, but sometimes there’s not a lot you can say without re-treading old ground. This is kind of how I feel about writing about this record. Vinnie Caruana, formerly of The Movielife and frontman of I Am The Avalanche, has released ‘City By The Sea’ - a six-track EP that does little to break the mold, but has stuck with me due to the catchy and affecting nature of the songwriting. The EP opens with ‘Somehow The [...]

Tim Barry has announced a UK tour in support of his latest release, 40 Miler . Singer / songwriter, Sam Russo will be joining Barry on the road.

As I've mentioned on many occasions, I keep a running playlist throughout the year. You've seen bits and pieces of it here but as 2012 comes to a close, here is the final product. Full of the singles that I listened to on repeat to the tracks I put on every mixtape this year and now with the added bonus of being influenced by the year end lists of my friends and contemporaries. It's all over the place genre-wise, but I think it is a pretty solid collection. Amanda Palmer - [...]
I know I waxed philosophical about the value of an album as a whole earlier this week but don't get me wrong- I treasure my iPod and it is jam packed with playlists with every theme under the sun. Including a "Best of..." for 2012. Here is the ten I've chosen from that ...pretty extensive list that has soundtracked my year. Melanie and Barlow contributed ten of their carefully cultivated choices each to help round it out and here's our official Best Tracks of 2012 . [Tiffiny] Apologies, I Have None - The [...]

© 2012 Hannah Neild Tim Barry has to be one of the most interesting people in music. The former Avail frontman now plies his trade as a singer/songwriter, playing songs about his hometown and the places he's been. The thing is, he seems to have been everywhere. Myself and Hannah sat down to talk to him in Leeds before he played in support of, Xtra Mile label-mate, Frank Turner. We discussed everything from, his new record, '40 Miler' to his life outside of music and what he's got planned for the future.

Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls - © 2012 Hannah Neild Frank Turner is a touring machine. The man is constantly bouncing from country to country, presumably on a quest for total world domination. Regardless, it’s always nice to have him back in the UK. Even more so when he’s playing some smaller venues than people might be used to seeing him in. Frank’s tour this month marked his largest UK tour for some time. Along for the ride was Tim Barry - a man Frank has to tour with here for ages - [...]

I think it's customary - if not a tradition at this point - that when Frank Turner goes on tour I have to go and bother him. Myself and, new Ruckuser, Hannah caught up with Frank in Leeds to talk about everything from Movember, to touring with Tim Barry - a man who he's wanted to bring to the UK forever - and the darker side of his forthcoming record. We even managed to get him to spill the beans on a forthcoming EP, but you'll have to watch the interview to find out when you can expect [...]

© 2012 Samuel Frank Wood The Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun stock just keeps on rising. The Cheltenham folk-rockers are currently enjoying a tour in support of Frank Turner - who described them as "the best new band in the UK" - and get better every time I see them play. Their sophomore album, 'Death', was released earlier this year to much critical acclaim and their latest single is, in my opinion, one of the best songs on the record. That single is 'Wishing Well' and you can see the video below. The [...]

Supported by Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun & Tim Barry Not for the first time Rock City opens its doors at 7:30 for a sold out gig with the first support on at 7:45. No chance. The queue is down the street, around the corner and disappearing inside the neighbouring multi story. Then of course Jim Lockey & the Solemn Sun finish five minutes early. So I don’t catch a lot of their lively full throttle folky-country-punky-rocky mixed baggy sound all the way from Cheltenham but it was good while it lasted Jim. Sort of [...]

Woot! It was nice to get back to the podcast. Mad props to Charles for keeping it active and awesome the past two months. So awesome, in fact, we’re gonna start alternating months so you’ll hear him again in November. Like I was saying though, I am naturally a night person so I find actual enjoyment in staying up till 3:00 in the morning making these on Friday nights and after 2 months off, I had plenty of music to pick from. I tried to keep the podcast from being a facsimile of the radio show and I [...]

© 2012 Greenland Photography Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun have been riding a wave of success since the release of sophomore album 'Death' in April and that's only set to continue into the near future. With two headline tours in support of the album under their belt and a forthcoming stint on the road with Tim Barry and, label mate, Frank Turner to look forward to in November, things are only getting better for the folk-rock outfit from Cheltenham. I met up with Jim and Chris before their show in Manchester for a [...]

With their sophomore album 'Death' seeing them soar to new heights, I can't see it being very long until Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun are the band that everyone is talking about. The four-piece folk-rock band from Cheltenham are enjoying their fair share of success right now and that only looks to increase as they head out on tour alongside Tim Barry in support of, Xtra Mile label mate, Frank Turner. I sat down with Jim and Chris to talk about 'Death', the forthcoming tour, re-issuing 'Atlases' and how Xtra Mile should really be giving me some [...]

Holy shit. Like Poltergeist 2: we’re baaaaaack. For now. I cover it in the show, but I apologize for the massive break between shows. For the time being, I can’t say there won’t be another multi-month gap between shows and it’s gonna be that way for the remainder of 2012. It sucks, but sometimes real life takes hold. That said, I did make a show and that’s why you’re here, so let’s talk about that... I have a show for y’all this time around that hits all the bases. Sometimes it rocks, sometimes it’s [...]

As usual Tim kept the wraps tight on this one and aside from the live shows we really didn't know what we would be getting and as far that goes we didn't give a damn because we knew it'd be a damn good album. So when I finally got my greedy little mitts on this one I couldn't wait to give it a spin. first thing that struck me about this album was little less "FUCK YOU" and a little more self deprecating humor. In other words it reminds me more of hanging out with Tim in person than of [...]
