Today I'd like to address what is my Top 10 songs of 2008 list. Much like what will become my 2008 Top albums list this one is in constant flux. However, unlike to Top albums list my top 5 songs are always my top 5. So, let's take a look at what I think were the best songs of the year. 10. Grayson Capps - Ike (I am a complete sucker for story songs and this is an especially awesome one.) [...]

Here's the second half of my list so if you missed the first part, it's right here . What you've got here are my favorite albums of 2008. Honestly, I was actually surprised how the list ended up but I don't care how much street cred I lose for these picks, they are the records that I just couldn't stop playing. 25. Okkervil River - The Stand Ins ( Jagjaguwar ) I'm pretty much convinced that any record that Will Sheff puts out (until [...]
As someone that has been listening to Richmond, Virginia's Avail for over a dozen years now, it should come as no surprise that I like Tim Barry but I'll be honest here that as much as I love Avail, it took seeing Tim Barry live and in-person at the Revival Tour earlier this year for me to really fall in love with his solo stuff. His first two releases were good, but holy fucking shit! His latest album, Manchester is so much better than I thought it would be. It is avail-able [...]

When Tim Barry's 2007 release, Rivanna Junction, came out I wasn't really digging it. It was descent enough but there wasn't anything about it that caught my attention and after two listens it was moved to the cd rack to be forgotten. Then came the Revival Tour and even though I was there I used Tim's set to grab some beers, use the bathroom, browse the merch table, etc. etc. Then a funny thing happened. The stage lost power during his set and instead of stopping he just walked down into the crowd and played a song acoustic while they [...]

Lucero lead singer Ben Nichols was kind enough to give me some of his limited pre-show time at the Black Cat recently when he came through DC with Chuck Ragan , Tim Barry , and special guest Frank Turner on the Revival Tour . The show was a true hootenanny that included individual and collective sets by Nichols, Ragan, Barry, and a rotating special guest (in DC, it was Frank Turner). (Ben Nichols) [...]

It makes complete sense to me that last year's punks will be this year's protest singers. The medium might be radically different but the message is often the same. Punk music is raw and angry and lyrically simple due to the age and makeup of the band members but these young punks grow up and want to express themselves more completely. Good resent examples are AA Bondy, the Nightwatchmen (Tom Morello of Rage and Audioslave), Eddie Vedder and now Tim Barry formerly of Avail. Tim lives in "Red State" Virginia so on the [...]
There is always at least one song that is constantly buzzing my brain, wreaking havoc with my thought process, often making me sing out loud and therefore wreaking havoc with others' thought processes. Currently that song is "Dog Bumped" by Tim Barry. Prior to Friday night, I had never heard of Tim Barry or this song, and now its an indelible part of my DNA. Barry was in Philadelphia as part of The Revival Tour, a loose aggregation of punk rock rebel rousers who amped it down to loosen it up. The other songwriters were Hot Water Music's Chuck Ragan, [...]

About a month ago, Avail's Tim Barry stopped by Munford Elementary to perform some songs . Virgil from Surburban Home Records has decided to put the songs out onto a limited 7-inch release. The first run will include 300 on white vinyl and 700 on brown. It will most likely come out around the middle of September. Read below the jump for Tim's official statement, along with pressing info. This recording was never intended to be released. Ms, Kiesler asked me [...]

Tim Barry ( Avail ), Chuck Ragan ( Hot Water Music ), Ben Nichols ( Lucero ) & guests Bob and Austin Lucas are coming to Louisville's Skull Alley on Oct. 4 for " The Revival Tour ." While the show will feature individual sets from each artist, in the old tradition of true folk music, the performance will largely feature artist collaborations, as each performer will have guests coming on and off stage, including the other solo [...]

I know that I've mentioned it before, but there seems to be an increasing trend for more and more musical artists to blend punk rock and country or other roots music, and I'm loving every minute of it. Perhaps it started with Whiskeytown and the Old 97's and soaked in enough for bands like Drag The River and Lucero to carry the torch, but (to me) it all just seems natural. I grew up on a steady diet of punk rock and have for the past few years become increasingly fond [...]

Some people, like those that fought in the Revolutionary War, earn freedom. Some people find it dropped in their lap even though they do not deserve it. Ain't that right Mr. Libby . Most of us just work and pay bills and try to have a little fun with the little that is left over. Well today we'll celebrate freedom with free shit falling in our laps....deserved or not! Recently those fine little bastards at Suburban Home sent me 10 copies of their 2006/2007 Winter Sampler along with a Drag The River purchase I had [...]
Vocalist Tim Barry of Avail has posted the first track from his debut solo album. You can check out the song here: " Avoiding Catatonic Surrender ." Suburban Home Records had this to say: Tim Barry recently went into Minimum Wage Recordings to record his debut album for Suburban Home. We set a release date of November 21st for the album which has been named Â"Rivannna JunctionÂ". At this point, we are very excited to share with you an mp3 from the album, the 2nd track off [...]
