When Tim Cohen took the stage at The Lost Church sans any of his usual suspects on February 4th, he informed us that he'd be playing three songs, which could have left us wanting more — in terms of time, anyway — if they'd been of The Fresh & Onlys' short-garage-pop-song variety. But enough hypothesizing: he didn't, and they weren't. Rather, Cohen played each of the tracks off his latest record with the Magic Trick , The Glad Birth of Love . Anyone familiar with the [...]

Sonny Smith, the man behind Sonny & the Sunsets , is halfway through a series of performances that are one part music, one part theater, and three parts mystery called "Sees All Knows All: A Thing by Sonny Smith." Taking place at The Lost Church over four consecutive Saturdays that started on January 14th, the series showcases a rotating cast of local openers. The past two installments featured Alexi Glickman and Kelley Stoltz . As for the next two, Kyle Field of Little Wings [...]

Some years are great for shows – like 2008. Some are great years for albums, like 2009. But this was a great year for both, from the start. In the order I remembered them: Family Crest – My Living Room ; 9/11 Duh. Can you believe this alterna-dad cream dream supreme? A stalwart and happy-go-lucky nonet of classically trained musicians show up at my house to play their lovely, life-affirming chamber pop on the anniversary of 9/11 and my teenage son sits in on clarinet? You just had to be there. [...]

Song: "Delicate Creatures" Artist: Tim Cohen I'm really tempted to describe the haunting beauty of this tune by just copy/pasting the lyrics here, but even that won't do it justice. Tim Cohen fronts the San Francisco psych-pop outfit The Fresh & Onlys , but in this solo track he strips away all of the trappings and bares his musical soul. There's nothing but a strummed acoustic, a softly-shaken percussive shaker, his lilting voice, and a faint, ghostly warble in the background, but that's all this song needs. It's a strange little creature [...]

Wet Illustrated's "Gypsy Town" manages to do what so few up-beat bands can do these days: balance propulsive chirp with strong song-writing and a solid core of, well, something else. "Gypsy Town" kicks off with eager smiles and overwhelming hellos. The vocals bust in and all of sudden your rushing down Wet Illustrated River trying [...]

For a while now there's been an entirely welcome little bird chirping in my ear about a bevy of amazing San Francisco releases. That bird would be Arvel Hernandez of Empty Cellar Records, a label that deserves more credit for releasing some absolutely amazing stuff in the last few years. You could, if you were [...]

O sleep, come for me; I will go quietly // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

Last Wednesday the Rickshaw was packed with those celebrating the release of Tim Cohen's new LP The Glad Birth of Love , as well as the tentatively labeled "farewell show" for longtime indie pop Bay Area band Magic Bullets . In recent years, new members have come into Magic Bullets and their set has evolved as a result, but, for this special evening, they also performed a few old songs. Their set opened with a hit from the early years, "Heatstroke" - which has the [...]

San Fran's Fresh & Onlys are really starting to get on my nerves. Whether it's frontman Tim Cohen or the whole band, they just keep turning out tunes, and good ones at that. I've probably spent close to $100 on this band this year alone (Tim Cohen included), which either means I'm a sucker, or they're just that good; I'm going with the latter. P4K announced that they'll be releasing another new 73 in September, and based on this, there goes a bit more money from my wallet. I'm guessing you feel the same [...]

If you've been reading these pages for some time, then you undoubtedly are aware of my man love for Tim Cohen . While he gets more press for his role in Fresh & Onlys , he's definitely got other great things going on, such as his Magic Trick project. He just released a song from The Glad Birth of Love , which will see a full release on August 23rd. While there are hints of psych folk, that seems to live primarily in the trickling [...]

Tim Cohen, like his Bay Area bretheren Sonny Smith and John Dwyer, is one hell of a prodigious dude. Just this year, he's already put out a solo LP and EP on Captured Tracks and an EP with his band The Fresh & Onlys via Sacred Bones . Now, in celebration of his birthday this past Tuesday, Empty Cellar Records has released a limited edition version of the new album, The Glad Birth of Love —a 45-minute LP comprised of just four epic tracks. Credited to Cohen's four-piece group Magic Trick, the record [...]
