Tim Cohen: I Lifted My Arms Here's a jangly new cut from Tim Cohen's second solo effort, Laugh Tracks . Fleshing out the lo-fi psych-pop of The Two Sides of Tim Cohen, the album opts for a "full-bodied approach, complete with horn arrangements". If you're a Fresh & Onlys fan/general admirer of Tim Cohen, don't hesitate to buy this release - you won't be disappointed. Tim Cohen- I Lifted My Arms

Can free music ever be a bad thing? Actually, yeah it can. I had someone give me a Michael Buble CD once....I still have nightmares about that day..... Anyway, can GOOD free music ever be a bad thing? Of course it can't. That's how I found out about Wet Illustrated, their song "Born Stoked" was bundled up in Insound's weekly newsletter and I duly downloaded and rejoiced at what my noise detectors were hearing. The guys are from San Francisco and even though they only have a couple of songs that you can hear, both of those songs [...]

The Fresh and Onlys rise from sunny San Francisco, a town that is often over shadowed by more of the mainstream cities in American, so its always nice when you stumble upon something ear catching. A new EP, and first, through captured tracks titled August in my mind is the seventh release for a band that has only been together for less than two years. With the title track we hear the bear essentials of garage rock tied with waves of melodic psychedelia. Drunk lead vocals from Tim Cohen spill over powerful cymbals and brushing [...]

Sandwitches - "Grey Wizard" Secret Seven Records recently released In a Cloud , a compilation of 14 unreleased tracks from some of San Francisco's best up-and-coming talent. The catch? It's a limited vinyl release with only 500 copies. But something tells me this thing will make its way into digital format sooner or later. You can order it online over yonder . Side One: Sonny & The Sunsets – "Heart Of Sadness" Fresh & Onlys – "You Owe Your Life To The [...]

Sonny & the Sunsets – Too Young to Burn Happy new year! Here's hoping 2010 will be another 12 months full of so much good music that we'll still be harvesting it for gems well into the next year. Apparently Sonny Smith is a bit of a cult hero in the Bay Area, having released records, short stories and films for years, but with the help of the likes of Kelley Stoltz, John Dwyer (Thee Oh Sees) and Tim Cohen (the Fresh & Onlys), he has put together a nice collection of west coast pop in [...]
![Gumshoe's Top-25 of 2009 [Curiosities #27]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2195822_lg.jpg)
I've finally decided to give in and post my Top-25. With so many things to review it's easy to slack but I gotta get down to BUSiness here. A few bands endeared themselves to me especially heavily this year, for the first time: Tonestartssbandht (the only group with more than one album), The Fresh & Onlys (whom I've been raving about all year) and Ganglians . They made 2009 particularly interesting, but there was a whole lot of goodness [...]
![Thee Oh Sees – Dog Poison – Captured Tracks (Part 2: Tiny Mix Tapes) [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2193096_lg.jpg)
I liked Thee Oh Sees ' Dog Poison soooo much I wrote about it TWICE, once HERE in much more personal, blogolithic fashion ... ... And once HERE tahDAYYYYYYYahhhh (that means that if you want to read my Tiny Mix Tapes review of Thee Oh Sees Dog Poison YOU HAVE TO CLICK ON ONE OF THESE LINKS . I don't want there to be any confusion ... ) The Tiny Mix Tapes review is a lil' better - TMT gets Gumshoe's best nuts - but they [...]

like the swiss and minarets, i have to draw a line under too much of somethingor other. i have gorged myself sick recently on the various mangled forms of garagey rock that's floating bloated in my musical bathtub just now, clutching brokenly on jack daniels bottle. so this'll be brief and to the point. and with only some cheater slicks action on the horizon i feel a flurry of country, rockandroll and noise noise noise (of biblical meets heinz proportions) coming on strong. no more rocket from the tombsian types. [...]

Today's Radio Dick will digress into semi-rant this weekend, not particularly because the tracklist I've got below is bad, but more because I'm knee deep in New Moon nonsense. Considering the soundtrack issue is relevant and thought-provoking, I wanted to follow up on my already disdainful, yet mildly successful take on my initial fears and frustration with the album's indie-heavy cast. I work in an American high school. This means I had half of my classes skip school on Friday because they were up until 4AM catching the first showing of New Moon [...]
San Francisco's the Fresh & Onlys make for great autumn listening. There's something gothy about their psychedelic rock 'n' roll swing, but the sort of vintage wind-blown vibe that's more internal than dyed hair or eyeliner. That atmosphere was definitely there on " Invisible Forces " and " Dude's Got A Tender Heart ." You know, a sort of refined Gun Club garage thing (they still do mention Buzzcocks, Mekons, and Country Joe and the Fish as favorites). As far as their employment info, bassist Shayde Sartin explained: I'm the only one currently with a full-time job. I [...]

[ Stay tuned for a review of Thee Oh Sees' performance tomorrow or maybe later tonight; haven't decided yet. ] If you're looking for one band, just one, that personifies the latest wave of Punk, it's Fresh and Onlys . Their songs run an astonishing gamut between Factory Records/ Joy Division / Blank Dogs (by extension) darkwave ("Invisible Forces"), roots punk and rock-a-billy (just about anything off that first Castleface album), Bad English / [...]

Tim Cohen is something of an unstoppable songwriting machine, and now he's added solo artist to the list of projects he's been involved with recently. The Two Sides of Tim Cohen was written and recorded by Tim at home during the time between Black Fiction and The Fresh & Onlys , and it's rich in wonderfully skewed lo-fi psych-pop. Tim Cohen - "Haunted Hymns" Released by Secret Seven Records and Empty Cellar Records , the album's vinyl-only and the first [...]

Seems Tim Cohen's a busy man these days, with the Fresh & Onlys last LP barely dying down to a simmer and an upcoming release impending on Woodsist; hey why not throw in a solo album as well? The Two Sides of Tim Cohen strays far from the work Cohen's been doing lately with Fresh & Onlys, mixing a strong slice of loner psych into the haunted mysticism that permeated his previous work in Black Fiction. There are bursts of pop that peek through the rain soaked windows of Cohen's songwriting, occasionally letting a little light into his [...]

Tim Cohen is the lead singer of The Fresh & Onlys, and I was recently presented with his debut solo album, The Two Sides of Tim Cohen . The album was recorded in between his break-up with Black Fiction and the birth of The Fresh & Onlys. This album is full of psyche folk gems, reminding me of some Fresh & Onlys stuff, but sounding refreshingly original as well. Songs like "Take Aim Goliath" and "I Swear To God" sound like Ariel Pink giving a shit, while others like "Unjeweled Splendor" and "Haunted Hymns" sound like a lovechild between [...]

The Fresh & Onlys debut LP came out in March on Castle Face records, and we've also had two 7" singles as well, but get ready for album #2, Grey Eyed Girls, which comes out September 15th on Woodsist. If you read this blog's sporadic posts, you'll know I'm a huge fan. The first track from Grey Eyed Girls has just been released and it happens to be my favorite song from their Woodsist/Captured Tracks performance a few weeks ago, "Invisible Forces." It's all minor-chord progression is spooky-gothy like it's title implies, and it's of [...]
