If death metal is your thing, then MUF just wants to let you know that a ton of that slashing metal released this week, yet we didn't post any of it. We will not be covering that music genre at this moment. What can be said about this week is that a few gems are out there and we only were able to brush the surface. Great Northern , a group we will be catching next week with Eulogies and The Dears, released their grunge pop album Remind Me Where The [...]
Rock/Americana - For his fifth album, critically praised Americana rocker Tim Easton decided to "make some noise and get that jagged, midwestern rock and roll sound again". The result is the April 28-released Porcupine a welcome jolt of rough and tumble swaggger that manages to condense three-chord grace and passion into two and three minute slices that mix up blues, rock, folk and a hint of twitchy rockabilly. With folksier elements still creeping through to recall Dylan and [...]
Lately my tech problems are seemingly endless. Last week, conficker.c. This week, sound card issues. I'm not certain yet if their is a burnt out transistor or what, but when I try playing music through my sound blasters there is a horrible crackling sound. This overwhelms the music. It sounds like a very, very sick [...]
Remember a few years ago when Dave Grohl wrote an insane metal album and invited all of his favorite singers to sing on it? Probot . A little outside (okay, a LOT outside) of what he was doing in the Foo Fighters, but it was the kid in him just letting loose and making the album he always REALLY wanted to make. Longtime Columbus drummer Paul Abbott (Woosley Band, Karma Farmers) has put together his own little Probot-like project that he's named Pocketful of Sunshine and the players on the album ( Target [...]

One of the interesting products I saw at SXSW promoting a band's music didn't involve trendy usb drives, twitter widgets, or recording software. Instead it was a custom-made, hand-painted, vinyl record cover from Tim Easton . Tim Easton's new record is called Porcupine and it'll be out on New West soon, but the vinyl is apparently available now (at the Yard Dog Cafe in Austin at least). Each lp cover was a different painiting done by Tim, but all were loosely based on the Porcupine image below. The [...]

Ok - before we post Tim's sign-off, we at Stark want to say a big thanks to him and Baird for risking their hearing, sobriety and virginity to bring you, our readers, some great coverage of the gong-show that is SXSW. We hope to be down there ourselves with Tim and Baird in 2010 consuming delicious tacos and rock. And country. Tim's write-ups have been some of our favorites we've ever posted, and you're certain to see more from him on this "rag." If you haven't yet done so - be sure to check out Tim's music . He's [...]

The beauty of SXSW is that at any given hour, there are so many contrasting options and events sprawled across the greater Austin metropolitan area that there's always something for everyone. Friday and Saturday certainly proved this, offering a perfect balance of stadium-sized swagger (Metallica and Echo and the Bunnymen at Stubb's), laid-back lounging under the sun (everything at the French Legation Museum), and nearly everything else in between. Don't believe us? Check out the following photo recap from Days 3 and 4 of SXSW 2009 and see for yourself, and make sure to stay tuned for our full SXSW [...]

Why do I spend money I don't have trekking back and forth across the country to attend every music festival that I can possibly make time for? The answer my friends, is in the song...as always Tim Easton - 'Festival Song' MP3

Even though Tim Easton is an Akron native now living in Joshua Tree, California, it always feels like a homecoming when he comes back to Columbus, as he did for a show at the Rumba Cafe Saturday. And judging from the bursting-at-the-seams crowd, Columbus, in turn, still embraces Easton like a native son. The man has certainly spent plenty of time here, dating all the way back to his days at Ohio State playing with Kosher Spears, then later during his stint fronting edgy, alt-country favorites the Haynes Boys, whose 1996 album Guardian Angel [...]

I caught Tim Easton's show at Rumba Cafe Saturday night. He didn't disappoint. A full review will be coming shortly. He also was selling a new "dirty boot bootleg" CD, complete with stapled construction-paper sleeve, titled "Highway 62 Love Songs." I put on the disc today, and it's anything but dirty--14 tracks of intimate, nicely recorded Easton songs, most of which are new. In the words of a McDonald's ad campaign, I'm lovin' it. A couple tracks for your enjoyment: mp3: Tim Easton - Two of Us mp3: Tim Easton [...]

All the boys know, where better to look than the girls for inspiration. Songs about girls make the rock and roll world go round. What's your favorite song about a girl ? 1 : Dave Edmunds - Girls Talk Buy Repeat When Necessary 2 : Tim Easton - Help Me Find My Space Girl Buy Special 20 3 : [...]

I really don't know anything about this band, and the internet is not giving up their secrets too readily. Their myspace site states that they're KateR and Dark Watson, and they hate the war: Formed on New Year's Day, 2006 in Joshua Tree, we do not support the war and are asking you to do something to help stop it today. Our songs are less about political jive and more about love, which at this moment is in short supply around the world. We have one record, which was recorded and mixed on January [...]

Maybe call me slow, but I just found out that Neil Young started a section on his website awhile back called Songs Of The Times , and there are over a 1000 free tunes you can listen to from various songwriters known and unknown. All deal with the timely subjects of war, patriotism, our foolish leaders and the state of the world we are living in. Here are just a few tracks that piqued by attention, go visit Neil's Living With War site here for [...]
Don't you just love the friday random? It's kinda like going through your halloween candy bag at the end of the night and not knowing if you've got a bunch of those killer single serving Twix bars or a soggy paper bag full of old Reach Around Amos' famous lettuce and butterscotch cookies. I think I've got Twix for ya: new Tim Easton track Jesus Protect Me From Your Followers These folks have made a cool video for a song from Enablers fabulous Outlook Negative [...]

Lullaby Baxter is back after a five year absence. Her debut in 2000 on Atlantic Records had critics and fan all a twitter. But she soon disappeared, fell in love, had a child, and wrote a book. She's back now and her new record, Garden Cities Of To-morrow , ( Boompa , Aug. 22) seems to fulfill all the promise of her debut. She hired (then fired and then re-hired) the production duo Hercules to produce her followup and what sounds like a lot of work later (recording [...]
