While reading Eric Weiner's interesting search for happiness, The Geography of Bliss , I was consumed by the most casual mention of Francium (the least stable, naturally occurring element; BLAM, just used my Chem degree) and the perfect description often attached to the element. " Vanishingly rare ." Limited by it's own stability - a half-life of just 22-minutes - and impracticality, Francium mimics the same characteristics as a good indie pop song. Gone before it can be properly contained and bottled, the painstaking task [...]

My stomach is upset this morning. It feels like nervous stomach but I don't really know why I'd be nervous. End of school anticipation? Perhaps I've forgotten something important? Too many cherries yesterday?? Could be just about anything! Another Episode of Viral Video With all the talk of people getting sick and the untreated dying, we don't want to downplay the seriousness of the whole Swine Flu thing. At the same time we are reminded that the world "almost ended" back in the late Seventies from Swine Flu. (You don't remember it that well either?) We ll check out these rather inflammatory PSAs that aired in 1976. Chilling! (Thanks to Sophia for these.) Now take off the surgical mask and go [...]
It's December, so that pretty much means fighting through crowded shopping malls, going crazy with last minute work before the holidays and trying to convince your mom that they should by you another guitar pedal (ok, maybe that's just me). Whatever the case, we're all busy this time of year. Thankfully, the good folks at Pop Echo Records are making it a bit easier for me to get off my lazy butt and post by announcing a free compilation in honour of the holidays. Available here for a limited time , the [...]

FILE: FLU SEASON As I write these words I grow increasingly weak. It's ten p.m. and I have been sleeping for more than five hours. I have the flu bug - it came on my very hard and very suddenly. It's the same illness that's probably been falling the people in your office or school and -- its nasty. I fought it as long as I could - but to no avail. Definitely hoping that it goes as quickly as it came. I leave you this evening with a few songs for [...]

BREAKING NEWS: Evel Knievel is dead at 69 years old.... Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel, Jr. (October 17, 1938 – November 30, 2007) was an American motorcycle daredevil, a well-known figure in the United States and elsewhere since the late 1960s, and arguably the most iconic motorbike stuntman of all time. Knievel's nationally televised motorcycle jumps, including his 1974 attempt to jump the Snake River Canyon at Twin Falls, Idaho, represent four of the top 20 most-watched ABC's Wide World of Sports events of all time. He enjoyed a lengthy career in this extreme sport despite suffering a series [...]

Tim Gilbertson - "Get Going" My introduction to Edmonton, Alberta's Gilbertson was at Chromewaves , and they're right about his self-titled debut (Pop Echo Records) being a throwback to a '90s guitar-pop sound. I, for one, will always be a sucker for a dreamy vocal melody bouncing off of a simple overdriven guitar progression as is happening on "Get Going." Add a rubbery string melody at the bridge and I'll stand in one spot with hands in pockets nodding along in blissful agreement. Yes. I'm saying, yes. [...]

DATELINE: Alberta, Canada : The songs begin with a flourish... The steady drum beat and string of wispy lyrics strung together with methodical, low - but steady guitar. Welcome to the land where rejuvenating sunshine reaches even the most ragged , darkened corners. It's the sound of power pop technician Tim Gilbertson . The twenty year-old singer/songwriter just released a self-entitled album capable of soothing the most savage of beasts. I didn't expect to be taken in quite as much as I have by Tim's music. He has [...]

First a couple of notes: Contrast Podcast 78 is up with the theme of music released on 78 rpm, and a very eclectic set it is. The scary part for me was that I was really beginning to enjoy those old Hawaiian tunes that provided my own contribution, "Sexy Hula Eyes" by Andy Iona. Check out Lost In Your Inbox for some nice older Sufjan Stevens and Art Brut, not to mention a video by They Might Be Giants about growing older. And a reminder: none of us are [...]
