On the last official day of autumn, here are four gorgeous ambient hymns for the season. I'll continue to post Songs for the Autumn retroactively because it's objectively the best season, and many songs that evoke it follow suit. Tim Hecker - October (Part 1) Tim Hecker - Song of the Highwire Shrimper Fennesz - The Other Face Belong - October Language

DOWNLOAD: Tim Hecker - Chimeras (MP3) Tim Hecker , gettin down! Tim Hecker is a Canadian-based musician and sound artist. Since 1996, he has produced a range of audio works... focused on exploring the intersection of noise, dissonance and melody, fostering an approach to songcraft which is both physical and emotive. The New York Times has described his work as "foreboding, abstract pieces in which static and sub-bass rumbles open up around slow moving notes and chords, like fissures in the [...]

Aidan Baker & Tim Hecker Fantasma Parastasie (10.2008, Alien8) Verdict = A little less than the sum of its parts The coupling of Aidan Baker and Tim Hecker on record is pretty much a dream team scenario. Baker is a propelling force of the pulsating drone doom outfit Nadja and Hecker stands as one of the elder statesman of glitchy free form electronics. So, it goes without saying that Fantasma Parastasie brings some pretty astrological expectations to the table. Right out of the gate, Baker and Hecker are immediately [...]
What a long fucking day. All I wanted to do was stay in bed, but I had to go to work. Then I had to stay until closing even though it wasn't scheduled. I went out with the boys for a couple beers and a couple shots last night, and went home shortly after midnight because I had to be awake and able-bodied for work. When I got home at 7:30 this evening, I learned that they were still drinking. An incredible marathon of booze that surprised even me. I can't imagine how dead everyone is going to [...]

I know I should've let that Lubomyr Melnyk post simmer a while but I just saw this and couldn't help but post about it. Aidan Baker (of Nadja, who knew who I was when I met him) and Tim Hecker (of...Tim Hecker) have made what I can only assume is sweet, sweet music together and they called it Fantasma Parastasie . It comes out on October 14th via Alien8 and it's streaming in full right now . Wow. I am ridiculously excited right now. Hooray for collaborations!!

What is there to do on a Sunday? I get home from work (after putting in almost two hours of overtime) and everyone's gone to Sunset Junction to hear shitty bands and eat/drink price-gouged food/drinks. It's dead quiet in the apartment, there's no furniture or anything here since the old roommates moved out, and I'm contemplating laying on the floor and closing my eyes for a while. Unfortunately, the weird bug bites on my ankles make it so I'm not interested in putting my face anywhere near the carpets, at least not until we're certain there isn't anything [...]
I know it's a bit late, but check out Swan Fungus' 106 Sunday Mixtape. It should get me back into the swing of things. Tracks: 1. Mogwai - Batcat - (buy this album) 2. Alice Cooper - [...]

Roger Clemens ("pitcher") tends to an injured Derek Jeter ("catcher") I woke up early this morning to watch what I felt was a reasonable portion of the congressional hearing regarding the use of steroids in baseball, and chiefly Roger Clemens' assessment that his former trainer's statements about supposed steroid/human growth hormone use were lies. There was no way I felt like waking up at 6:30am this morning -- on my day off -- to watch the entire ESPN broadcast, but I watched from 9:00am until its conclusion, and read Jayson Stark's blog updates from [...]

I don't think I've ever quoted The Hollywood Reporter in one of my news critiques, and quite frankly I'm a bit weary of any source with the word "Hollywood" in its title, but the link to this story came from Slashdot , so I'm optimistic that it is a legitimate story. The Recording Industry wants songwriter royalties lowered . As further proof that the music industry cares fuck-all about music and only about its rapidly thinning pockets, "music publishers, the record labels and digital music distribution outlets began a three-way legal wrestling match [...]
No, I'm not kidding. Stop laughing. There are certain people (32% of the population, according to this poll) who believe in the existence of ghosts. I don't know what percentage of those have attested to seeing a ghost, but I imagine it would be a considerable amount. I, for one, have never encountered one, be it through glimpses in my peripheral vision, electronic voice phenomenon, cold draft, odor, or actual sighting, and until I do I am not a believer. I am skeptical by nature, so I regard paranormal activities as inconceivable. The best explanation I [...]
Website re-launch. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. This week there is none. These songs will be removed if desired by the band or those who represent them. Let me know and I will gladly comply . The goal [...]

Antibalas - Hilo (Anti- 2007) Antibalas – Security / Anti- The opening track of Antibalas's fourth proper full-length kicks off with staccato horn flares and a tinny polyrhythm, which is nothing too much out of the ordinary for this band of afrobeat, afro-latin and deep funk connoisseurs, but about half-way through it falls into a grooving rhythm of slightly overmodulated drums, a weird kind of space-funk keyboard bounce, handclaps and subtle touches of electronics followed by a breakdown consisting solely of percussively played metal (not the genre [...]
Kranky P.O. Box 259319, Chicago IL 60625 USA 1. Who owns the label? Who operates it on a daily basis, and how many employees are involved? the topic here should be the artists we work with and the... sabas.jud.as-new indie music messiah

It was a good year here at Raven. It was difficult to make the list as short as it is, and impossible to pick a number one. So, in no particular order, here are our favorite albums of 2006. Vetiver - To Find Me Gone Andy Cabic takes his sweet country folk stylings on a trip through the best touches of 70's am radio. Dark Brooding folk songs with the kind of delicate production that made records become [...]
Ok the list is finished, but there's so much more to be added to the list, hopefully I'll be reviewing them in 2007. Stuff from Koop, Ornette Coleman, Dosh, 17 Pictures, Asuna, Sierpinski, Annuals, Hella, I-Z, Skream, Svalastog, The Emperor Machine, White Magic, The Plants, Fin Fang Foom, KTL, Goldmund, Johann Johannsson, ISAN, Janek Schaefer, Oxford Collapse, Paul Wirkus, Dead Meadow, Wibutee all deserved more listens but I'm burnt. God, please stop making records for some time! We can't keep up anymore. J Dilla - Donuts [...]
