This one has to be an evening post, because if you are familiar with Timber Timbre this is something that is as beautiful as it is dark. The gothic presence that is created from the very first pluck of the strings is incredible. This sound is something that could be the bastardized children, born in the back roads of the deep South that is unknown to even the locals. I mean it might not be, I could be out of touch... The song is taken from Timber Timbre's self titled 2009 release. I have to say that some [...]

Mary Mother of Jesus up a pole. The nightmare continues. This week's well on time (as in assembled & ready) show was marred only by DCHQ 's onboard navigational equipment. During the process of uploading the podfile to this here podpage the hard drive of the studio computer had a fit & went to sleep. Then it wouldn't wake up. Why won't you wake up Mr. Drive? we sobbed. But he never did say, for he were asleep. Turns out we'd fragged something pretty major in the configuration some [...]

On the show this week, some The Pains of Being Pure at Heart has pulled together an impressive debut LP. It has everything an underground pop junkie should go crazy for: twee melodies, danceable drum beats, repeatable lyrics, and a slightly noisy approach. We've also got two new tracks from Squarepusher from his latest EP, Numbers Lucent . It sounds like some kind of haven for his strictly electronic side, which has been negelected for the past few years; but he's revisiting old ideas and he hasn't lost his touch. Finally, we've got [...]

Although it can be classified as one of the most straightforward terms in music theory, timbre also holds the status as being one of the most audibly important. If music lacked timbre, it would be as if a language was running on one word or letter. No inherent differentiation in melodic content or instrumental accompaniment would make the art obsolete, along with the abolishment of technique or style. This hypothetical babble has little merit (simply because it will never occur), but it is also worth pondering if only for the artists that make such detrimental use of it. Calling your [...]

This week, we've got a beastly collaboration and a psychedelic rock fixation. The experimental electro-pop of Animal Collective's latest effort, Merriweather Post Pavilion , has quickly become an album that needs no introduction. So, let's leave it at this: We're playing it on this week's show. We've also got new music from Timber Timbre, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Beirut, and Gregor Samsa. Plus, a band whose music is a garage rock time machine: the Black Hollies. These guys aren't just fans of the Who, the Animals, Arthur Brown, and [...]
If a song is already great, there's not much more one can do to make it greater. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. This is obviously the credo of the eerily named Timber Timbre. Saying the production here is lax would be an understatement. There's not much present other than guitar and voice, but even they're barely louder than a whisper. However, Timber Timbre's tracks do what quiet music is supposed to do: pull you in. And though this music--and this track in particular--is very recent, frontman Taylor Kirk sounds like a distant voice [...]
Timber Timbre is the work of Toronto singer/songwriter Taylor Kirk, who released his self-titled third album last week for Out of this Spark records. The eight songs on Timber Timbre showcase Kirk's impeccably sparse acoustic strumming, with the occasional bluesy organ spatter and passive snare hits filling out the soft reverb of empty space surrounding Kirk's hollow vocals. It's got a real eerie, dust-covered quality that old warped vinyls possess, and I haven't been able to listen to much else since hearing "Demon Host" for the first time yesterday: [MP3] [...]

Timber Timbre - Demon Host Timber Timbre's Medicinals was one of my surprise favourites from last year and the mystique behind their new release intrigued me immediately. It's darker, less spiritual...and even a little bluesy. As I was ascending the steps out of King's Cross station this morning, looking up at the sky, the song reached that shimmering crescendo around the three-minute mark and I had a feeling that this will be a very good year. A nice way to start the day. Keep [...]

I have heard some fine records already in just the first two weeks of 2009, and I am happy to say that my first album recommendation of the year is from a Toronto based group called Timber Timbre. The band's self-titled third album comes out today on Out of This Spark . Taylor Kirk's soft and controlled voice is warm and welcoming; and when you combine that with engaging storytelling and tranquilly minimalist instrumentation, Timber Timbre is kind of perfect to listen to during the cold winter. Speaking of the cold, for those who are [...]

Last year my tardiness caused me to miss out on including Andre Ethier 's On Blue Fog in my 2007 year end best of, even though it would have definitely been there had I heard the album when I should have. Well wash, rinse and repeat, it look like I've done the same thing again this year. Andre Ethier's sequel to that brilliant album is entitled Born Of Blue Fog and it was released late last year to such little fanfare that I once again heard about it too late. And just like it's predecessor, [...]

Frank Yang Any sort of preamble for Saturday night's Out Of This Spark second anniversary party at the Tranzac was covered in Friday's post , so let's just dive right into the post-mortem. Leading off was Jenny Omnichord (neé Mitchell), accurately named for her weapon of choice . And while it may seem a bit novelty at first, the Omnichord is actually a very versatile instrument, ably providing accompaniment for Mitchell's quirky songs. It's no stretch that her latest album Charlotte or Otis : Duets [...]

Joe Fuda This week's eye has a feature piece on local label Out Of This Spark , whose second anniversary is the impetus for your best entertainment option this Saturday night as the label's entire roster will take the stage at the Tranzac. That's the lineup that includes a couple of personal faves and a couple others I'm just starting to make the acquaintance of. In the former camp are post-punkers The D'Urbervilles , whose rather excellent full-length debut from last year, [...]

The band Timber Timbre hails from the northern border country of Canada and is releasing their new self-titled album on January 13. The front man of this band, Taylor Kirk , creates a haunting version of rockabilly blues on the album. The entire album is made up of eerie songs that are influenced very much so by early blues players. In the song "Lay Down in the Tall Grass", the combination of the choppy organ and the vocals resemble such early blues songs as "I Put a Spell on You" by [...]

Davida Nemeroff Seminal new music showcase Wavelength - across whose stage pretty much every Toronto indie band of note from the last decade or so has passed - celebrates its ninth anniversary next month and as they've done pretty much every year that I can remember, they're marking the occasion with a full weekend of shows at venues all across the city. The full lineup was announced over the holidays, and the evenings of February 12 through the 15th will look something like this: On the 12th it's spooky folk [...]

Who? Timber Timbre What? Lo-fi soulful Blues/folk Sounds like? Sometimes it reminds me of Misophone. Bon iver without all the layers and without the howling, and Devendra Banhart like he sounded on Oh Me Oh My. oh, and Woods. Timber timbre is a band that i had on my computer for quite a while now, and just today i rediscovered it. While browsing through my media library I thought "well, look at this...no idea what that is". I put new music on my pc [...]

After a few days on the snow, I'm back to a warmer climate. I don't think I've ever seen that much snow in Tahoe although I still managed to find some rocks to ride over. Monday was light dry powder at Alpine Meadows and Tuesday was sunny cruisers at Sugar Bowl. There was the necessary stop at Dave's in Tahoe City and Ikeda's in Auburn. Go to both if you're headed up to North Lake Tahoe. I just got my hands on the new Autechre , Quaristice , and it doesn't seem to sound as [...]

With a cold gust of wind and the sharp crack of a branch, every hair on the back of your neck stand to attention. You know no one is there and the warmth of your sleeping bag and the ever fading glow of the fire provides more than enough shelter, but you are still left slightly unnerved. That's the feeling I get when I listen to Timbre Timber . On the surface, the band appears to be a folk outfit, rich in psychedelics, but as you strip away some of instrumentation and swirls, you are [...]
