Like running through a dream, Times New Viking create a stream of consciousnesses for their "Try Harder" video. Waking up just before dawn, the fast-paced projections of lights and images give the Columbus band the perfect burst of energy for the noisy single, the next off their recently released Dance Required . After watching live clips of the band interspersed onto barns and roadways, check them live this summer: Times New Viking 2011 Tour Dates: 06/07 - Austin, TX @ Mohawk 06/09 - [...]

Our top 25 band names of 2011 (so far...) really made us smirk just reading them. As we mentinoed in our 25-50 best band names, band-name creativity is something that will be the band's trademark. Sure, the band could break up, dive off in a different direction and create a whole new pseudonym. But a band name lives on forever and depending on the band's stardom, becomes a household name. Just as we all have done in the past (and still do), creating a band name is almost as much fun as making the music itself. These bands [...]

Live This Month: June 2011 In Live This Month , we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. June kicks off the summer touring season, which means a bunch of acts coming through SF and locals heading out on tour. Not coincidentally, a bunch of the bands included here have new records out this month, including My First Earthquake, Matt Bauer, The Wooden Birds, and Black Lips. Enjoy this mix and then go check out some shows! [...]

In The Red, 2011 Anyone who's heard the Coachwhips ' 2003 album, Bangers Versus Fuckers , knows the impossibility of overstating John Dwyer's ability to craft some of the most abrasively over-driven recordings in the history of rock n' roll. That band's penchant for playing three chord blues progressions at a blistering pace through a deregulated analog soundboard could blow the doors off anything the "THE" bands of the early 2000s could ever muster while simultaneously jarring loose your eardrums and leaving you dangerously disoriented . Though basic, that formula contained an [...]

[Photos by acidjack] The term "lo-fi" gets thrown around a lot, but when you're talking about the Columbus, OH three-piece Times New Viking , it is impossible to avoid it. Where a lot of bands earn the label by dint of using cheap gear and not giving a shit, for TNV, the scratchy, blown-out, distorted sound is an important part of their aesthetic. Their songs arrive in short bursts, almost universally under the three- or even two-minute mark, in a similar vein to kindred spirits and sometime tourmates Guided by Voices . While their new release [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Okkervil River w/ Future Islands, Titus Andronicus Tuesday, May 31 Variety Playhouse - 1099 Euclid Avenue NE in Atlanta 30307 Admission $17.50 / Purchase Tickets Any one of these bands by themselves would be a highly recommended show, but put all three together and you have an absolute can't miss event. In the two openers, Titus Andronicus and Future Islands , you have a pair of bands responsible for two of 20102s best albums (#4 and [...]

Times New Viking - Dancer Equired Merge Records: 2011 Back in 2008, Rip It Off established Times New Viking as one of the progenitors- and experts- of the lo-fi revival. They paired sugary melodies with tangible grit of bootstrap recordings. Their melodies were sweeter, their guitars louder, their whole aesthetic more fully realized than many of their contemporaries. It makes sense, then, that the band had no problem breaking (just a little bit) out of that shell on their latest record, Dancer [...]

Before lo-fi was the only thing music blogs ever talked about, there was Times New Viking . The trio was doing its DIY-home-recording thing in Columbus, Ohio, back when the revivalist genre was still in its infancy. Pitchfork commended the band's second album, 20072s Present The Paisley Reich , and other critics followed suit with 20082s Rip It Off (released on Matador Records). The next thing they knew, they were being asked if they were a precursor to a trend. If Times New Viking's latest album, Dancer Equired! , is any indication, all [...]

Last week I wasn't feeling so great and more than anything I was concert-ed out. As a result I missed some big ones like Tune-Yards, Fleet Foxes, and Lykke Li, but at least my wallet is happier. Now that I haven't seen a concert in 10 days, I feel ready to get back out there. This week provides some good ones and Wednesday is full of tough choices and amazing talent. There'll be some good weekend concerts too in case standing in back yards at memorial day barbeques becomes redundant or too rainy. Specific venue information and links can be [...]
As a term defining a certain recording style and general aesthetic, "lo-fi" includes the notion of energetic, frenzied performances recorded with a screw-the-details ambivalence. The flaws are the charms, and if one song happens to be a little weak, there are plenty more to record. As the aesthetic of lo-fi grew into its own sort of genre, what it took for a band to stand out started
A tale of lost lovers presented with endless details in this cool collage of a video.

Times New Viking are back with their fifth album (yes, fifth!) in six years. Heralded for their underproduced, noise pop sound, the trio of Jared Phillips (guitars), Beth Murphy (keyboard and vocals) and Adam Elliott (drums and vocals) have released Dancer Equired. Fans may be in for a little bit of a surprise, as with album number five has come something previously unknown to the band - production via proper recording facilities. It may seem a little trite to mention this, but I think it's worth considering as this is a group that has built a following [...]
