Something a little different -- this is a playlist I burned for some friends to jam during their trip to Lousville for this Saturday's Kentucky Derby. Rather than upload the whole thing I'm just dishing out a couple key tracks. Be sure to grab the Beach Boys song down below, too, if you didn't get it yet ... I think that one kicked off one of my mixes years ago and it always gives me that electric beginning-of-summer feeling ... Better grab some bourbon , watch some races and get ready to make [...]
Monday: Benefit for Callum Robbins feat. Radio 4, Bob Mould, Annuals, Special Guests @ Bowery Ballroom $25 7pm The weeks gets off to a good start for live music tonight with this benefit concert for Callum Robbins . Obviously the lineup for the even is pretty darn solid, but really the benefit part of it is more important than the music. You can read more about the benefit here and donate in case you can't make it to the show. Annuals - "Brother" Radio 4 - "Enemies Like [...]

* Times New Viking : Devo & Wire (2.5 mb) | New Times, New Hope (4.0 mb) | Love Your Daughters (4.5 mb) From Present The Paisley Reich : Siltbreeze Records : SB93 It's really cool to live in a city where decent record stores exist. I'm not gonna say that they're the best in the world, but it's nice to walk in to a store and get recommendations that you can trust. This group/album is one [...]

Despite some light posting I've been mainly absent from MS duties for a week or so thanks to some R & R and family type festivities in my old stomping grounds of Salem, Oregon. The upside of this absence for you, the lurker, is that I've had time to catch up on some listening. Here are a few songs that, though posted about the internet previously and perhaps even gracing the stands of a record store near you, have finally been graced with my seal of approval. Gui Boratto - "Beautiful [...]
"No. More. Room. On. The Bus. Bus left town, we're rolling out! Don't need you!" -- Tom, closing the doors on the non-believers "Like The Black Lips enough to play something on Vice Records. That's a testament to how good The Black Lips are." -- Tom, supporting the band irregardless of their coke fiend employers "I appreciate you saying that, but it ain't no mystery why you're an EMT, not a doctor." -- Tom on EMT Ryan blaming his severe pain on excessive rocking out "Go to [...]
I've just finished jotting down all of the stuff that I saw at SXSW, and it appears that I saw almost 50 bands. 47 different acts, to be exact. I knew that watching live music from noon past midnight for 3-4 days straight would allow for a lot of action, but, damn. 47 bands almost seems impossible to me now that I look back at it. I don't think I ate a single proper meal all week, and I know that didn't have more than four hours of sleep on any night. If my brain is [...]

Times New Viking Present The Paisley Reich Siltbreeze Indie Rock doesn't have an Alan Greenspan to make corrections when the scene loses its focus. There's no suit in a secluded office, sitting under stacks of charts and reports, pushing and pulling the scene to ensure its health. This fact has become painfully obvious as during the past decade, the word indie has lost all of its meaning. Once the word stood for independent or indie rock, but these days, the word is more likely to mean indifferent [...]
Times New Viking "Love Your Daughters" - Times New Viking's lo-fi style may be an affectation in the age of Pro-Tools, but it's an aesthetic choice that works well for them, and pretty much anyone else who plays this sort of raggedy, fuzzy pop rock -- the kind of music that used to be synonymous with the category "indie rock" before that phrase ended up getting corrupted by overuse. A lot of the beauty in lo-fi comes from its distinct, informal textures, and the way it makes every sound seem lived-in and familiar, like a crappy [...]

The internet is more powerful than you can ever imagine. Not only can it deliver you vast amounts of information through the air we breathe with the magic of wireless networks, it can also read your mind. Not convinced, are you? How else do explain the fact that I've been craving, no strike that, jonesing some noise rock, and today I find myself in possession of two prime cuts? Coincidence? No, my friends, the internet was reading my mind and fulfilled my wishes. Ok, let's say you're still not convinced. Here's the [...]
You know how music is a form of expression, it's just this thing people do and there's no reason for it, humming when you're alone is music in its purest form. Yelling when someone steps on your... Matador Records has signed Times New Viking out of Columbus, Ohio. The band consists of drummer/singer Adam Elliott, keyboardist/singer Beth Murphy and Jared Phillips on guitar. Rough and fuzzy in a sort of lo-fi garage rock sound that makes me swoon. There is no smooth remastering with Times New Viking - it's all about the raw old school sound and I love it. The band released their debut album Dig Yourself on Siltbreeze last year and will be releasing their sophomore album, [...]

File Times New Viking under One To Watch for 07. In a musical landscape littered with Braff-Rock (not my term, but I love it), indie pop, dance rock, and Post-Whatever, a strong reactionary statement is inevitable. So, let me introduce you to Columbus, Ohio's Times New Viking. Their recordings hearken back to the lo-fi days of the early nineties where Robert Pollard and Guided by Voices, Sebadoh, and Pavement were tops of the indie charts. Pro-tools? Digital remastering? None of that here. Times New Viking sound as if their scrappy garage rock [...]

Continuing along their followup tour to support their new album, Microcastle, Deerhunter is making their way to Warehouse Live here in Houston. The album has deservedly received stellar reviews across the board, notably a 9.2 from Pitchfork. You can read our brief article about the album here. For this show, Deerhunter will be playing with Nite Jewel and Times New Viking. The show promises to be diverse, interesting, and engaging. Tonight (December 3rd, 2008): Deerhunter at Warehouse Live, $15 (unconfirmed) - Doors at 8PM, Show at [...]
