Who? Frontier Ruckus What? snowed country town melancholy, the farmers are locked in their barns, and they just have their banjos. Sounds like? Timesbold, Whip, Will Oldham, Bonnie Prince Billy Winter is to be seen at the horizon. If you don't watch out, it'll catch you. I heard from a friend that it was snowing in the United States. This seems like the beginning of an eternal winter. Luckily there is Frontier Ruckus. It keeps you warm, evne if it's sad. It's [...]
it goes a little something like this: my aim with the label is to release music by friends and people whose art i feel strongly about and to share these sounds with those around the world who need them... those who will listen and draw closer. and if that’s not the perfect bloody reason to start a [...]

Cover presented by Story Hello and allo, happy Monday! It's a cold one today, down to a nasty 3°F today (windchill drops it to -1,000° or something fucked up like that), it's the kinda cold that gives you lips that weird blue feeling, no what I mean? Like you can feel the color blue, and your nose gets so numb, you are snotting on your face without even realizing it. No worries, everyone is, no need to be embarrassed. I [...]

Timesbold is a folk band that hails from New York, so I guess we're doubling up NY bands for now. Their singer, Jason Merritt, sounds a lot like the singer for Okkervil River, which is more confusing than anything else. I do not really feel like writing a whole lot of words today, but I will say that if you've liked my folk suggestions of the past, you will like this band. If you like Okkervil River's singer and wished he had a side project that was decidedly more folky, you will like this band. These songs are all [...]

Scissormen will see their first nationally distributed disc via Red Eye this September. They just played Bonnaroo and claim to have made a big splash (from the looks of the photo above I'll take them at their word). The record is called Luck In A Hurry and is a dirty, bluesy affair. "Tupelo" is one of the few blues songs you'll ever hear with a vibraphone intro. It's a mudddy, distorted track that suits its subject matter to a T. Tupelo ----- [...]

Photography by Peter Still a busy week, my friends, so it'll have to be another quick one. Sorry. Next week things should be back to normal at work and I can get my groove on. Until then, I was hanging out, taking a little break, down in the record shop , when good friend & society member Carie recommended Timesbold's Ill Seen Ill Sung to me. She said it sounds like "traditional, guitar, wicked, banjo, ghost town, blues, and drag", I'd agree one hundred percent and [...]

(more...)
