( Sad Songs & Waltzes is a recurring feature on Muzzle of Bees, where artists share their favorite sad songs. Previous contributors include Megafaun , Delta Spirit , Damien Jurado , Sharon Van Etten , Over The Rhine , Conrad Plymouth , Frontier Ruckus , Strand of Oaks , and Roadside Graves .) This feature has been one of my favorite accomplishments white running this site. The selections shared have opened musical doors previously closed to me. For that I'm very appreciative. I'm very excited [...]

The Mission Straight out of college and hungry to make a full-length movie, an aspiring filmmaker together with a group of close friends did just that. Frustrated and dissatisfied with distribution options, they set out on the road to find an audience. From city to city and town to town, they discovered touring was the most direct connection to growing a fan base and having their movie seen. The initial Range Life tours exceeded all expectation. We found a greater need for not only screenings, but for expanding creative outlets through educational programs, social networks, and [...]

In honor of "Labor" day, here is a mix I made back in the fall of '05. The Duchess and I were talking a Lamaze class. Our teacher encourage us to make a mix of soothing music for the delivery. The Duchess wondered why we couldn't have a mix of up tempo songs. Songs to keep the energy up. To keep the breathing rhythmic. To keep her in a good mood. Instead of moody, slow songs that would only annoy her. So I made this batch of rocking songs. Of course, Duke Jr. was a [...]

We travel back to a simpler time. A time when music had no words. Or at least a time when The Duke used to post instrumental songs on a weekly basis. When I conducted my features survey, there were dedicated readers who were jonesin' for some wordless tunes. Today we have a trio/quartet who wear tin hats. Or at least a trio/quartet that plays some incredible music. Bill (after Bill Frisell) Holiday Joel (with Billy Martin from Medeski, Martin & Wood) Happy [...]

Image credit: The Liquid-Rust Ship by Stuart Lee A lullaby is like an antique airship that inflates itself with your deepest thoughts and most hidden dreams and softly floats you into dreamland. An airship that's built out of soothing melodies, hush vocals and sweetly sung lyrics that slowly drifts over a landscape of unfilled promises and brooding fears. It lures the listener into a world of unrestricted imagination and infinite freedom. Tonight, we're the sea and the salty breeze the milk from your breast is on my lips [...]
I tried to throw together some songs with either "glory" or "hour" in the title (with a little Jem thrown in for good measure). Martine Sexton ~ Glory Bound (one of my all-time favs) Serena Ryder ~ Stay for an Hour (nice pipes) Branches ~ Sixteen Hours to Georgia (alt-country-rock-ish) Public Enemy ~ Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos (a classic) Tricky ~ Black Steel (cover of above) Jem ~ 24 (cinematic) Julius [...]

Rusty ring, Shimone Samuel Elliott Carter Family - Tin Hat Trio If industrial music is the sound of abstract urban decay (lonely clang of metal on metal, echoing boom of empty warehouses), "Elliott Carter Family" is some kind of agrarian complement, evocative of the menace of abandoned barns groaning as they ease their weight into the earth, rainwater dripping on rusted metal, windows on loose hinges flap, flap, flapping in the wind. [...]
