Grapple The Rails managed to make my top 10 of 2012 despite not having even been reviewed on ninebullets. Well, today we remedy that horrific oversight. When I first wrote about Tin Horn Prayer I described their sound as, “for cramped bar rooms with six inch high stages covered in spit stained ripped red carpet” and that they “seem[ed] to have an Irish bar band spirit to them in the sense that their charm lies in their raw, unpolished sound and if they were to clean it up any it just wouldn’t be [...]

Most years, this is a much greater presentation from myself and I’m sorry that this year isn’t the same. It’s been a shit year and that fact combined with the depression that comes with it has sapped my entire motivation to sit down and do all the HTML formatting to make this list as beautiful as (i feel) it normally is. Presentation aside. I stand by this list wholly. I may not have been able to muster the ambition to format it like years past (I am taking pills that are intended to get me back there) but [...]

As I've mentioned on many occasions, I keep a running playlist throughout the year. You've seen bits and pieces of it here but as 2012 comes to a close, here is the final product. Full of the singles that I listened to on repeat to the tracks I put on every mixtape this year and now with the added bonus of being influenced by the year end lists of my friends and contemporaries. It's all over the place genre-wise, but I think it is a pretty solid collection. Amanda Palmer - [...]

I’d like to say it took me so long to review this album because I was trying to separate personal feelings from musical appreciation, but that is pretty much impossible for me. As you know, Tin Horn Prayer is my favorite local band. Naturally, I was pretty excited for their second album release. When it was picked up by Paper + Plastik I couldn’t wait for my friends in other locales to get a taste as well. Then there’s the record itself. Grapple the Rails is dark. It’s bookended by [...]

Six members deep with a sound as raw as a chainsaw cutting through a pile of beer bottles. In a good way. Grapple The Rails, out on Paper + Plastick Records, is streaming in full below. Read more »

Paper and Plastick have posted a stream of the new full-length from Denver, CO's Tin Horn Prayer , Grapple the Rails .

I took most of October off from concert going due to a variety of reasons but holy cow November has some amazing shows and I'm ready to jump right back in. November 1st / Hi-Dive / Denver Two Cow Garage [ tickets ] This band is incredibly special to me and always put on an amazing, heartfelt as fuck show. If you've never seen them, prepare for an experience. If you have before, you know what I'm talking about. [...]

Throughout the year, I keep a running playlist on my iPod with my favorite songs. Back in June we did a half way list , but lately I've been making amendments to my choices. And, since we just happened to have passed the 3/4 mark of 2012, it was a good excuse for a post. Apologies, I Have None - 60 Miles Apologies, I Have None - 60 Miles This one came to me from Barlow, who I immediately messaged to get the name of the band [...]

The beauty of this festival is that you have the freedom to wander from venue to venue and catch brand new music. Some of them are literally next door to each other. Inevitably each year, I end up somewhere with good air conditioning and good drinks, despite any plans I've made for a schedule. There's always something happening and there'll often be slots with at least two bands that you're wanting to see. Don't stress it- don't wear yourself out. There will be other opportunities and you're not going to have a good time if you are exhausted, dehydrated, and [...]

I am probably the only person in Denver that would trade 100 degrees and dry for 85 and humid. I was chugging water, Cokes, beers, whatever drinks I could find. My mouth was a desert; I just couldn't drink enough. I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one. Tin Horn Prayer couldn't drink enough, either, but I think it was for an entirely different reason. In the middle of the day's heat at La Rumba, Tin Horn Prayer delivered one of my favorite sets of Westword Music Showcase. With nods towards punk, bluegrass, and roots rock, [...]

2012 has been nothing if not an awesome year for music. The awesome releases will have to taper off eventually because I'm already overwhelmed. We easily started off with a playlist twice this size before narrowing it down to ten tracks a piece. Apologies, I Have None - 60 Miles Audra Mae - The Real Thing Best Coast - The Only Place Chris Stowe - Sometimes They Give Us Beer For Free [...]
Most of the time you go to the station, do your show and leave. It becomes a routine of sorts. Occasionally you do a show that you really feel good about. Last night was one such show. Not sure what it is that sets some apart from the rest but whatever it is, last night's has it. I opened the show with a Lumineers, Mastersons, The District Attorneys set I'd been thinking about doing for a few weeks but wasn't sure how it would go over with the listeners. While the middle of the show features a brand new Gaslight [...]

I fell in love with this song from The Switchboard Sessions last summer and have listened to it a good deal of times since, sometimes on repeat. I became so attached to this version that I initially rejected the studio recording of this track. Then I got over being so indie that I could only listen to demos and came to appreciate the final cut of “Stumble”. The wheezing accordion and harmonies make Thomas’s voice a little less lonely. It has grown into a stomping sing-along instead of the song you listen to [...]

Here’s the teaser track from Tin Horn Prayer’s upcoming long player Grapple The Rails. Tin Horn Prayer - Stumble by BeatSurrender You can still download the bands debut album at Bandcamp for free .
The past few weeks have seen 9b Radio sit in a more mellow groove so I decided to up the rock level of this week's show. It certainly didn't hurt to have Truckstop Darlin' and Tin Horn Prayer send me brand new songs and when you combined those with Sunday Valley, an unreleased track from the Bohannons the rock kind of upped itself. Even the requests fit the overall feel I was going for last night so good job to the listeners. Now! Go put some ears on the archived stream of the show . Below is [...]

03 "Louis Collins" is a traditional murder ballad that's been making the rounds in music for almost a hundred years now. There are versions by many artists floating around, but here are my two favorites. First, Tin Horn Prayer screeches their way through the song with shouted vocals and stomping, appropriate of the subject matter. Tin Horn Prayer - Louis Collins Josh Ritter 's version is a bit different. He combined the tale of Louis Collins and that of Stackalee into [...]

I love Tin Horn Prayer . Like in that way where I take way too many pictures of them and go to all of their shows and they should probably consider a restraining order...if I wasn't so cool. Anyway, this song came up on my iPod during my commute this morning and ended up with it on repeat throughout the day. It's angsty and shouty and full of harmonica and harmonies, so my kind of song through and through. Give it a listen below and you can download "Wretch" and download all of Get [...]

This post comes to you a little late, but 2012 has been a little crazy. I celebrated New Year's Eve on the 30th of December with the first of two nights of Slim Cessna's Auto Club at the Bluebird Theater. This was a full night of Colorado music as Tin Horn Prayer and Drag the River kicked off the night in style. Both of these bands are friends [...]

Micah Schnabel is one of those musicians who makes you forget everything but the music during a performance. He is very dear to our hearts here at The Ruckus as I imagine he is to anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Micah perform solo or with Two Cow Garage . I often boast about this, but Colorado is an awesome place for music and this week I'm feeling especially proud. We get four shows of Micah Schnabel and two of them, including the Denver date, have our friends Tin Horn Prayer [...]
Did you miss the Suburban Home Records Anniversary Party this year? So did I. Having made the last two it was especially hard for me, knowing exactly what I was missing and all. Luckily, Denver music scene chronicler extraordinaire, SxPxDxCx of That's The Thing About That did not miss it and he ran tape on the entire weekend. While it's not the same as being there, I do plan on pouring a tall glass of whiskey tonight and listening to this compilation loud enough to make the neighbors complain. If you're [...]
