by teepoo Dean Marino from Papermaps was the common link between all the performers on this Thursday night. He started the night off right with a solo set that included upcoming songs for Papermaps and guitar-only renditions of old ones. I especially liked Complicate Things . You wouldn't expect these songs to work very well on their own, but if anybody can do it, it's Dean. Papermaps- Reunion Dean wears many hats, and he [...]

It takes some guts to base an album on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. That's exactly what Toronto's Tin Star Orphans have done with their forthcoming album The Days of Blinding Fear (out digitally August 30th, physically September 21st). The record, the band's sophomore effort, draws it's inspiration from Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic novel The Road (now a major motion picture as the
Toronto indie roots band Tin Star Orphans have announced the wider release of their latest album The Days of Blinding Fear. The record, which saw a very limited release in May, will be available coast-to-coast on September 21st. The album is apparently inspired by Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Road. It's lucky for me I finished reading it a couple of weeks ago. Tin Star

As always, Tuesday night was Dave Bookman's Nu Music Nite at The Horseshoe which means a bunch of free music. A couple of the bands on the bill came highly recommended to me personally so I figured that I would swing by and stay for at least a couple of them. Turns out that I stayed for most of the night. The Balconies are the band that I was most highly encouraged to see and they kicked off the evening. I had literally spent zero time with their music [...]

(photo: Patrick Struys) I love this blog. Maybe I don't say it enough, and maybe I'm too hard on myself sometimes, but man, do I ever love getting new music on a regular basis, and discovering something that I wouldn't have normally come across if I wasn't the curator of QBiM. It's a dual-edged sword writing a blog, because you're being pulled in two directions: your own personal taste and passions, and music that you may not be a fan of, but will draw attention of new readers and garner you some pretty impressive page hits. [...]

Tin Star Orphans is een vijftal uit de Canadese stad Toronto. De groep, met zanger Zachary Bennett, heette eerder Yonder. Dat is ook de titel van het album dat 5 mei verschijnt. Let You Down is de single. Radio-friendly roots-tinged pop . Dat heb ik altijd al eens willen zeggen. MP3: Tin Star Orphans - Let You Down Tin Star Orphans op MySpace Subscribe [...]

Tin Star Orphans a five piece from Canada who used to be called Yonder. Now they are releasing an album called Yonder. Which upon reflection is actually quite a clever thing to do. I wonder if any other bands changing their name have done that before. Anyway, the band come across a slightly more ramshackle, more amiable version of Arcade Fire. Various instrumentation appears at unexpected moments, shows rise and fall, all with vocals that manage to be both restrained and jarring depending on what is required. Written, it shouldn't really work, but [...]
