Every Saturday we take a look at some quality funk, soul and disco here at the Labs. Wether it be old or new, we're digging it and feel the need to share. Known as the Queen of Rock & Roll, Tina Turner has a career spanning over 50 years in the business. Her back catalogue is a vast array of solo work, rock anthems, duets and her raw earlier material with husband Ike. She is also partial to an amazing cover or two. While she became a massive success in the 80s and 90s, [...]
Happy holidaze everyone. I'll (sadly) be out of town all week, which makes recording and posting music hard. My plan is to have two most posts this week though. One will be without music, focusing on my favorite (and least favorite) albums of the year. The other will have awesome dance tracks. Let's hope that all pans out. Tonight: 80s pop! What's a better way to celebrate whatever holiday you pretend to care about in order to get gifts? Art Of Noise Moments In Love (Long Version) [...]

In this week's feature, Jamie Lees talks to legendary rock photographer Bob Gruen about what motivates him, how he finds his shots and what matters about music. He's in town this week as part of... Continue reading "The Coolest Photos of Chuck Berry and Tina Turner, Plus Bob Gruen on St. Louis" >

"Call me Ishmael." "Four score and seven years ago..." "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." Do I have your attention now? Good. Ah, the power of famous first words. They do more than reel in an audience. They live forever, in books, in speeches and in music , where an album's first impression might not always stick, but a powerful opening statement -- Track 1 to both the iTunes and CD generations -- grabs your attention and gives you reason to believe that [...]

Yesterday afternoon, Kelly Clarkson premiered "Mr. Know It All," the gorgeous lead single from her upcoming fifth studio album Stronger . She also took the time to answer fan questions on her trusty iPad ( watch in full! ), revealing loads of new info about her new single, some dish on the new album, and future tour plans. But before we get into all that , can we just do this for a moment: Okay. I've always loved and adored the Clarkson with all my heart, but SERIOUSLY. Is she not [...]

IKE NO LIKE - At what point does a genre simply become a camp, twirling parody of itself ? Right about here I reckon. Its long been the tradition of dance music for its established subgenres to turn in on themselves and start rehashing pop tunes from the annals of history. Take this Pyramid remix for example. I'm not even going to fucking listen to it, the track title says it all. Yup, that's a Tina Turner dubstep remix. For a genre allegedley at the bleeding edge of electronic music grunting out [...]
I've said before on this blog that my descent into music obsession was a relatively gentle one. It was sort of like boiling a frog. One year I was making slightly more mixtapes for people than most of my other friends and then, merely twenty years later I've quit my job, burned my clothes and disappeared off into the depths of the Forest of Musicdale with nothing but a spear and a loincloth for protection. And it was so gradual I never even noticed it happening. Tracing this kind of mania back to the very start is kind [...]

I am always troubled when "alt-rock" is used to describe a band. I mean, what exactly is the difference between "rock" and "alt-rock", is "alt-rock" when "traditional" rock goes mental? If yes, I suppose "alt-rock" works as a label for synth-based Fight Like Apes from Dublin. In 2009 I heard their songs 'Tie Me Up with Jackets', with singer MayKay's sing/talky voice, its bleepy blips and anarchic, shouted chorus. Their second album 'The Body of Christ and the Legs of Tina Turner' was released in Ireland in 2010 but finally [...]
