We love a good collaboration, as longtime SoundRoots readers know. But when a "world music" group is approached to play with big-name Western stars, interesting things happen. On the one hand, there's Tinariwen . The nomadic desert rockers recently announced that they will open for the Rolling Stones on August 18 at Slane Castle in Ireland. It's a move that makes sense to me: The rebel attitude of these soldiers-turned-musicians captures something that the Rolling Stones once had, but arguably lost en route to becoming super-rich superstars. And it's certainly [...]
This past Saturday I went to see Tinariwen at the Bataclan in Paris. Lo'Jo, the French group who helped setup the Fesitval in the Desert with Tinariwen and others a few years back, were the openers. Their show was actually quite impressive. I put it like that since I find their music [...]

When skies are low and heavy as a lid over the mind tormented by disgust, and hidden in the gloom the sun pours down on us a daylight dingier than the dark; when earth becomes a trickling dungeon where Trust like a bat keeps lunging through the air, beating tentative wings along the walls and bumping its head against the rotten beams; when rain falls straight from unrelenting clouds, forging the bars of some enormous jail, and silent hordes of obscene spiders spin their webs across the [...]

Tinariwen - Imidiwan Winakalin (World Village 2007) Tinariwen – Aman Iman: Water is Life / World Village When you hear modern renditions of the blues, they just don't quite have the same emotional impact of recordings from the Delta bluesmen of the 40s. It's not that they aren't true to the characteristics of the genre or they lack the musical chops, but the emotional impact just does not parallel. It's been a good chunk of time since the majority of American blues men had something truly soul-stirring to [...]

Well, that may be an over-enthusiastic statement with a touch of over-hype. But there is no doubt that Tinariwen are the current band to be into if you have any aspirations to know anything about African music. The new cd Aman Iman has been reviewed all over the place. Some UK journalists have even been to Kidal, from whence the band hails. And that's not an easy journey. Its obviously a good thing that a good band who release a good album get the recognition they deserve. [...]
Tinariwen's most recent album is on Independiente (UNIVERSAL), a clear sign that the majors are now interested in exploiting the Taureg dimension of sound. Who are Tinariwen? It's best to think of them as a cross between Jimmy Hendrix and Ali Farka Toure set against the backdrop of the Saharan desert. They formed in the camps of the Tuareg rebels in 1982 and their songs are sung traditionally in the French and Tamashek languages. - Matadjem-Yinmixan , from Aman Iman The Radio Tisdas Sessions was their first album to be released outside of [...]

Tinariwen - Imidiwaren Tinariwen - Nar Djenetbouba Tamashek, the language of the Kel Tamashek of the Sahara desert, contains dozens of words for camel. This tribe of wandering nomads and traders are the spirit of the Sahara desert, and you can hear it. I can only describe it like I would the desert had I ever been there. Its breezy but hot, with life springing up out of the most unexpected places. With the emergence of western technology the electric [...]
