Ah, New Jersey. How I loathe it. For giving us the likes of Bon Jovi (that's not a steel horse you're riding, amigo, it's the dildo of mediocrity); Patti Smith (poet-priestess my ass—try the bard of babble and blather); and Bruce Springsteen, who calls himself the Boss and as everybody knows all bosses are assholes, except mine of course. And let’s not forget my first ex-wife’s sphinx of a grandmother, who had the nauseating habit of sucking on her food then spitting the pulp into a napkin, and who never spoke a single word to me (and I'm talking years) [...]

screenshot from Consequence of Sound There is no end to the incessant, bizzarre, and wonderful sonic/visual spectacular that is The Flaming Lips . Last night on Jimmy Fallon the band played a version of Bowie's "Heroes" wearing capes, hoods, and -- in Wayne's case -- hardly anything at all, except for a loincloth and a full-stage rat's nest of shimmering electric light tubes. The band also played "Try To Explain" from this year's album The Terror . Check out the clips below, and head over to Consequence of [...]

Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus chants, "Bring back the dudes!" in the beginning of the video, the unofficial name of the band's spring tour with dude friends The So So Glos . When dudes are together, they are wont to bring out some blue-collar covers of hometown pride. Previously, Titus Andronicus covered "Born To Run" with Diarrhea Planet, and now So So Glos and Titus team up for the Beastie Boys anthem "No Sleep Til Brooklyn", honoring the So So Glos' home turf. Watch the two punk bands fight for their right to [...]
By now most folks know where I stand on the present sensitive folk movement. Mainly that I’m over it. So today I thought I would prove I'm capable of more than just bitching and post some bands I actually like. And no, none of them formed in the 90’s. In my latest search for bands [...] The post Songs I like: Ladies Night appeared first on Your Music Is Awful.com .

The Twitter feed of Titus Andronicus, at the helm of frontman Patrick Stickles, was full of a particular kind of outrage today when reporting on the band's show with the So So Glos in Athens, GA last night at the Theatre Rooftop. According to Stickles, who is not one to shy away from controversy or outbursts on his Twitter page, an audience member brought several confederate flags to the show and then apparently distributed the flags to audience members during "More Perfect Union"....

If you were wondering where to be every night this week, it's most likely going to be Strange Matter. There's a whole bunch of great shows coming up in the next few days. Broken Water are touring again after a long hiatus and have a show coming up on Wednesday, May 15 at Strange Matter with Canary Oh Canary, Whoa and Hoax Hunters . THe group's recent LP "Tempest" is full of big sounds and melodic fuzz reminiscent of Sonic Youth. [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Wizard Smoke (Final Show) w/ The Liverhearts, Vincas Friday, May 17 529 - 529 Flat Shoals Avenue in Atlanta 3031616 Admission $8 In light of last week's tragic death of one of the Atlanta metal scene's biggest supporters in Steve Barrentine, it seems almost trivial to mourn the loss of Wizard Smoke . On the one hand you have a life cut far too short and a massively devastating human toll that will reverberate far outside the daily grind of Atlanta [...]
Titus Andronicus, The So So Glos, The Caldwell Walters May 10, 2013 Friday night featured a four-band showcase at the new Walters (not on Washington) headlined by New Jersey indie-punk group Ti... Continue reading "Titus Andronicus at Walters, 5/10/2013" >

Titus Andronicus and The So So Glos: bringing back the dudes BY JORDAN MAINZER REWRITE BEGINNING. SEE EMAIL What's left to say about Titus Andronicus at this point? At least that's what I initially thought. I don't think it's an overstatement to say that the Glen Rock, New Jersey band’s show on May 4th with fellow Brooklyn DIY punks The So So Glos and Chicago-based but originally from Brooklyn band Sharpless (who sound like some sort of Thermals/Screaming Females hybrid and who [...]

Punk is not dead. I'm tempted to just finish the write-up right there: a four-word zen koan for all of you to parse over. Just pull a Mr. Miyagi and drop the mic. In the interest of being informative, though, here are some things to know about this song. It's called "Son of an American." It's about commercialism and xenophobia. It's funny and biting at the same time. It's also vicious and catchy as all hell. It's by a band called The So So Glos , who are the patron saints of Shea Stadium [...]
Titus Andronicus takes its name from a Shakespeare play -- fitting, given the theatrics of leader Patrick Stickles and his band. From a practice space in New York, Stickles spoke with DC9 abou... Patrick Stickles, lead singer of Titus Andronicus , screamed "I'm going insane" over and over to close out the song. The crowd was going nuts and a crazed fan was being crowdsurfed across the little pit at Lee's Palace . As I watched, the fan got surfed a little too close to Stickles and locked his arms locked the singer's slender shoulders. He started pulling him down into the crowd. Without missing a line, Stickles finished the song--screaming "I'm going insane" over and over and over right into the crowdsurfer's face--and then [...]

Toronto concerts worth knowing about in March, 2013. OK, Erin didn't write this so if you came here for decent jokes, find her via Eat This , her classy soup kitchen. Y'all are really lucky, though, because bands are getting into their warm-weather-happy-times tour schedules, and while NXNE isn't until June (and so far looks to be dis-a-pointing compared to Halifax's Obey fest) May is bumpin. Bumpin. Meaning I found some legit shows to hype for you, including Toronto Thaw 3, which will set [...]
Diarrhea Planet and Patrick Stickles deliver a faithful-but-hardcore cover of Springsteen's 'Born to Run.'

The So So Glos release their new album Blowout today. Blowout is out on the band’s own Shea Stadium Records, and produced by longtime friend and Shea Stadium owner/collaborator Adam Reich and engineer/producer...
We reported some Seaport Music Festival news earlier and now the free, annual River Rocks series (for the second year on Pier 84 ) has announced it's 2013 line-up. The first happens on July 11 with Generationals and Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside . Then the second happens on July 25 with Foxygen (who will hopefully actually play this time ) and Thao & the Get Down Stay Down (who just toured with Sallie Ford ). And finally, on [...]

So you just read that title right? One of my favorite bands from last year, Diarrhea Planet, and Patrick Stickles, the singer from one of my favorite bands Titus Andronicus, cover Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run" and it AWESOME! Stickles, a New Jersey native, absolutely made The Boss and the whole state of NJ proud with this cover. Diarrhea Planet had a huge SXSW getting on many top 10 lists and gaining many new fans. I saw these guys last October with fellow Nashville rockers, JEFF The Brotherhood, and I was completely blown away. I've been following them [...]

Without a doubt, Diarrhea Planet was the best band I saw during this year's South by Southwest. In fact, I'm thoroughly convinced they're the best band currently in existence, possibly ever. And, no, this isn't just because their name is Diarrhea Planet (that's like reason #32 why they're great). These Nashville rockers boast four guitarist who shred so hard and fast their kinetic energy could probably power an entire city block. They have a pretty great catalog of originals ( "Ghost With a Boner" , ftw!), but god damn can they do a cover song justice. Titus [...]
