Following on from the recent post of Emily & The Woods I'd like to introduce you another artist that was on the amazing lineup of the recent London Sofar Sounds gig. It was the perfect setting for London folksters To Kill A King with a stripped back, vocal dominant ambiance. I'm not even going to try and detail the state of rapture felt by all who were present in the small lounge room in Hackney Wick, suffice to say it was powerful . The overlapping harmonies added [...]
Words by Natalie Stas As they dove into the first song, there was a real element of surprise from everyone who had come to watch. From not knowing much about To Kill a King other than assuming that their profile aligns them to the indie folk of Mumford and Sons or Dry the River , you'd imagine their lead track to be a showcase of the full band, something of a crowd-pleaser. But the reality was quite the opposite. The five huddled to the front of the [...]

On an unseasonably cold, wet evening in Brighton on the English south coast, The Prince Albert at least offers a touch of old-fashioned warmth. This cheerily shabby Victorian pub boasts a small gig room upstairs, which on March 4th hosted up-and-coming five-piece To Kill A King , nearing the end of their first UK headlining tour. The published room capacity of 100 did not inspire confidence; indeed, the last time I tried to see a band here during the May Music Fest known as The Great Escape , I couldn't get through the doors such was the queue. [...]

We've been strong supporters of Bastille ( facebook / twitter ) here on the Walrus since I first heard Dan Smith's debut, FLAWS , last May and saw the band's breathtaking live show. Since then, we've had the pleasure of reviewing their debut EP, Laura Palmer , featured their cover of City High's What Would You Do on our TASTE Vol.1 mixtape , and put them forward as one of 20122s bands to watch . Now they are back with a free [...]

Words: Saam Das Fresh from their appearance in our bands to look out for during 2012 , Dan Smith et al have dropped a film-inspired collaborative mixtape, featuring the likes of Maiday and To Kill A King . As in the spirit of mixtapes, it is free to share and download. Listen to it in full below and soak in the evocative "film credits" artwork. The mixtape is a whirlwind [...]
Here is my list of the songs I liked best in 2011, which will be the last one we offer here. I only adhered to three rules with this list, really: 1. The song had to be officially released in 2011, 2. I could only select one song for any artist, and 3. The list [...]

Words: Saam Das Writing about the new BASTILLE EP yesterday reminded me about To Kill A King 's latest EP. The bands have shared roots having studied at Leeds University and had I not perused To Kill A King 's Soundcloud page last September, I may never have discovered BASTILLE . I wrote about To Kill A King not long after and they signed with EMI earlier this year. The 'My Crooked Saint' EP [...]
nodnoL quintet the TO KILL A KING this abso awesome must-watch a four-peice music video slash drama set over the course of one day, on one suburban estate in yorkshire. spread over 20 minutes, or watch separately if you prefer, butt nonetheless get watching the MY CROOKED SAINT video when you chance plz. thnx. wotyougot
My Crooked Saint is a set of four connected songs by new UK band To Kill A King . You might recognize the name from Shakespeare's Hamlet , but don't expect poisonous sounds to emit from this proficient five-piece, who in contrast trade in sumptuous melodies. Though now based in London, the band's roots are in Northern England, which lends a gritty realism to their music that reflects the people and places chronicled on the record. To Kill A King produces music that's not easy to classify, which is a recommendation in itself. [...]

It has been a long time since I put mixtape together here on The Blue Walrus - but thanks to the folks at 8tracks giving me an extra nudge I have decided to start a new series with TASTE. As it should be, the mixtape is jam packed with some of the jams getting me hottest under the collar right now featuring the likes of Bastille, The Whendays, and Victories At Sea. And as before, you can grab all the songs individually below, or pick up the whole lot in a zip file below. [...]

Tucked away under the arches of Embankment station is Heaven, the setting for this evening's gig. As the warm up act, a young Cacey Shea (a slightly brash Gallagher inspired soloist) finished, the cavernous room began to fill up with eager To Kill A King fans and the atmosphere began to build. City Sessions combines live footage with beautiful animation. Their To Kill a King session is just the tip of the iceberg.

We've been keenly watching the output of To Kill A King ( Facebook / Twitter ) here at Walrus Towers ever since Lauren got wind of Fictional State being released by Communion back in May . And since then the band has been busy recording for their debut EP, My Crooked Saint (released 17th October on Virgin Records) - with a video for each track. The EP is the fruition of their impassioned and intricate guitar-led songs, with the four videos hanging together as a single story, with each song unearthing a little [...]
London based To Kill A King , formed and fronted by the exquisitely-named Ralph Pelleymounter , has been making some sweet noise this year in what is now being commonly referred to (guilty as charged) as the "Mumford sound". But we'll also surmise being signed originally to the fine, much-buzzed Communion label -- co-founded by Mumford's Ben Lovett -- doesn't exactly hurt their chances either. New "Bloody Shirt" track comes to us from the upcoming October 17 U.K. four-song EP [...]
Relentless Garage | Highbury, North London | 27 July 2011 All three of the London Ruckus ladies are partial to a little To Kill a King . Even so much that we will brave a boiling hot Relentless Garage in Highbury to see the band. They are recently signed to Virgin Records and have some Autumn tour dates with Wakey Wakey! If you've not heard of the band, embrace the glorious Americana-Folk with some pictures and a cheeky little SoundCloud embed. [...]
Signed to Mumford & Sons' Communion Records, this sparse cover of the YYHs' classic strips away until there is nothing but the bare bones left. You may hear alot more from To Kill a King in coming months. Their London gigs to date have been attended by their official paymasters Mumford & Sons, whose label they are signed to, as well as the capital's folk queen Laura Marling. Reference points that have been bounded around so far include Frightened Rabbit, The National, Noah and the Whale - so far, so good. The [...]

Communion Records is probably the most exciting label that London has to offer right now, and here at The Blue Walrus, we've been fans from the start. Recent signings To Kill A King just go to prove what a spectacular force this label is establishing itself as. Boasting comparisons to The National, the Leeds-based five-piece offer beautiful, raw and inventive tunes that are the perfect soundtrack for summertime antics Their debut single 'Fictional State' was released on May 30th, and you can listen to it below. Listen on SoundCloud [...]
Saturday at The Great Escape is summed up largely by two things - fantastic music & queues! I had heard tales of the amount of queuing to be expected at the festival but on Thursday & Friday we somehow managed to avoid any apart from when foolishly attempting to get into Warpaint just 5 minutes before they started. Saturday more than made up for that though! (Although to be honest we weren't helped by the text messaging service that kept sending us to places that were already 1 in 1 out, therefore making it the biggest annoyance of the whole [...]
This week we've got new videos from Battles, Cults, Holy Ghost!, and Cloud Nothings. It's kind of a slow week for videos, but I think the Battles clip, created by CANADA directing team, makes up for it. Now would probably be a good time to mention that PS 1 in New York has a Alejandro Jodorowsky exhibition coming up. Once you see his Holy Mountain , you'll notice its influence on many, many music videos, including CANADA's clips. Santogold's " L.E.S. Artistes " video's entire second half is a tribute to the movie. Here's [...]
