Tweet Soon, a review of "Let's Go Eat The Factory" , but first a brief history lesson, just in case you don't know the story so far. Guided By Voices haven't released an album in 8 years. Some would probably call it 16 years, since it was in 1996 that Robert Pollard sacked and replaced the rest of the band with an all new line up. That iteration of GBV [...]

If news that the classic lineup of Guided By Voices - including Tobin Sprout (who hit the bricks in 1996) - were recording a new album didn't jar you to sit upright, let this notice grab hold of you: they WERE recording a new album (past-tense) and have now finished it. Let's Go Eat The Factory (out 1 January 2012 digitally & 17 January 2012 cd/vinyl), may not be the GBV record of your dreams, but it's a damn good record nonetheless. [...]

5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let's get weird. Words by Chris The king of the garage bands. It's almost like they're too drunk to realize they might be the greatest songwriters of the last 25 years. Oh, wait. [...]

Ohio's finest, Guided By Voices are to return in the guise of their very first incarnation, a brand new Matador Records -released single in hand. Following on from last year's reunion at the label's 21st birthday bash in the hedonistic haven of Las Vegas, new material from Robert Pollard, Tobin Sprout, Mitch Mitchell, Greg Demos and Kevin Fennell (aptly out November 21st) finally got spewed out by the internet. We Won't Apologize For The Human Race features on the flipside, while The Unsinkable Fats Domino hogs the A-side, and a mammoth slab of [...]

From Robert Pollard's page : 10/25/11 " The Unsinkable Fats Domino ," the first preview of the new Guided By Voices, can be heard / downloaded here . The song will come out as a 7" single on Matador Records on Nov. 22, and on the album Let's Go Eat The Factory, coming out January 1 on GBV Inc. in North America and on Fire Records for the rest of the world. Download the track and read more at Stereogum .

GBV @ the 930 Club, 10-21-2010 The "classic line up" of Guided By Voices -Robert Pollard, Tobin Sprout, Mitch Mitchell, Greg Demos, Kevin Fennell with Jimmy Pollard-is releasing the first record of new material in 15 years shortly. Titled Let's Go Eat the Factory , the 21 new songs were recorded "in the living rooms, basements, and garages of various long-time band members." Some tracks were recorded more-or-less live at Mitch Mitchell's garage, where the band would often practice back in the early- and mid-90s. These sessions comprised Mitch, Bob, and Jimmy Pollard, Bob's [...]

Big news out today from Guided by Voices - Bob Pollard and the reunited classic lineup have announced that they have a new LP due, out New Year's Day 2012. "The lineup of Pollard, Tobin Sprout, Greg Demos, Mitch Mitchell, and Kevin Fennell have recorded a brand new album called Let's Go Eat The Factory, their first since 1996′s Under The Bushes, Under The Stars, and they're going to release it on New Years Day. We've got that album's tracklist below." (via MOJO ) As a longtime GBV fanboy, I'm stoked to [...]

Lots of love flowing at last week's Guided by Voices show in Portland, OR. Looks like it was one sweaty affair, as the video below shows a drenched shirt of Robert Pollard, reflecting his violent pace. The clip shows the reunited band's last encore with the classic drinking ballad 'Johnny Appleseed' and then the mighty 'Weed King'. I can't believe I'll get to see one of the shows on this tour, thanks to some kind-hearted pals. I thought I'd be living the moments on YouTube only, but in a few weeks time I'll be shooting eastward [...]
Wow! Coming on stage around 12:30am Monday morning, there were no tired eyes showing from Robert Pollard and Guided by Voices, who pumped out one helluva rock n roll show at the Matador at 21 fest in Las Vegas . I tweeted last night about "Lethargy" and was able to find a clip of it shot by YouTube user supmag - it was one of many highlights during the set for me. Apparently, the set will be restreamed today - not sure when - click over to Myspace for more [...]
...while Friday night has long been the province of the Around the Fringe program on WYSO as hosted by Dayton's own Rev. Cool Jim Carter, tonight's edition will feature a very special guest host that we're very excited to hear. During the late 90s and early 2000s, Andy Valeri operated one of Dayton's most notable [...]

Little kidlets around the world can now read about the adventures of a fluffy bunny while their parents can flex their indie rock creds in the face of other parents at day care. Ex- Guided By Voices ensembleman Tobin Sprout is releasing his first children's book next month, entitled Elliott . The musician, who has a background in painting, helped both scribe and illustrate the children's book, which chronicles the story of a rabbit hero of the same name navigating through a "dreamy, magical world." [...]

Of all former Guided By Voices members not named Robert Pollard (and there certainly are a lot of them), Tobin Sprout is one of the more prominent names that pops up. He was instrumental in writing and producing a lot of great GBV tracks through the years. And now Sprout has turned his attention to a different artistic endeavor . He's become a children's book author. At least for his latest project, Elliott , a book he wrote and illustrated about a [...]

'Shangri-La Wrecker...' Tobin Sprout: The Last Man Well Known To Kingpin A lyric I often confuse with Shangri-La Records : finest music store in Memphis.

The unannounced three week summer vacation is over! Sorry for the hiatus! I've received lots music since the last post, so I'll be sorting through that. I've also come across a ton of great pop songs myself that I'll be posting, not to mention new material from yours truly, which will be coming out soon. Lots to look forward to, so keep checking Video Pop for the latest! To get back into the groove of things, I'm going to post a bunch of my favorite Guided By Voices songs. GBV made hundreds [...]

I've spent the last several Tuesdays on the subject of the cover article of Issue 1054 (June 12) of Rolling Stone , 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time compiled by writers David Fricke, Brian Hiatt, Evan Serpick, and Douglas Wolk. Last week I posted a few of my own favorite guitar songs that did not make this list, and I'll add a couple more today. Over a dozen years ago I recorded a live version of the Smashing Pumpkins performing "Siva" that became a much-played favorite. [...]

...is one of my favourite songwriters! Tobin sprout! Thats him in the middle, situated between his English cousin prefab sprout and his poncey Belgian mate, Brussels. You may not have heard of Tobin Sprout, and it wouldn't surprise me because he is a criminally overlooked man. He recorded most of his best stuff as member of Guided by Voices, which is to say blinking out from under the hulking shadow of Robert Pollard. I think people not familiar with them often had Guided By Voices pegged as a disposable cast of non-descript [...]

Today's Time Travel post continues from this previous post on Tobin Sprout. Although he is still actively recording music, of at least equal importance in Tobin Sprout's life is his studies in graphic art. His focus there is with light: its depths and reflections. You can see examples of that in the eyes of his dolorous and surreal subjects like this rabbit. His other studies in the visual properties of light often involve its gleaming reflections off chrome and glass. There are truly amazing examples in the gallery [...]

I guess most people who even know Tobin Sprout exists knew him first from the legendary Ohio group Guided By Voices. As often happens with me because of my isolation from any up-to-date music scene, I came to the knowledge backwards. I was not familiar with GBV when I first heard Sprout's "And So On" on CMJ's 1999 compilation CD which I have no idea now how I got. I fell completely in love with this little song and tried desperately and unsuccessfully for a long time to find out more about the singer. [...]
