Because I came up with the idea for this month's lists I got first dibs, so I chose the sin most in line with my priorities: sloth . I am, of course, the man who, at 32, still tries to sleep until noon on weekends and has remote controls for just about everything in my apartment, so it was fitting. It also jogged my memory in a couple of cases, so it was also lots of fun - hope you dig! David Byrne, "Lazy" I first became familiar with this [...]
My homeslice Chris Gray in Houston did a comprehensive video post looking at Todd Rundgren 's production and recording life. But since Rundgren will be dropping in at the Pageant tonight here in town, I thought I'd see his YouTube gems and add a few more -- after the jump. Feel free to email or comment with other gems as well. Psychedelic Furs' "President Gas," live in London 1982 (taken from 1982's Forever Now ) [...]
Todd Rundgren's 1972 Something / Anything album marked him as a heavy hitter in the music world. Not only did he play just about every instrument on the record; he wrote, recorded, and produced it all as well. AND when he played live, he rocked outfits that Devendra Banhart could only dream of pulling off. Dig this pheasant themed live performance of the song that everyone knows from this record, "Hello It's Me." [...]

What do you think, do actions speak louder than words? Is that just a cliché or does it really mean something? I will be the first one to admit that I am guilty of saying I will do something--or that I won't do something--and then turn right around and either forget all about it or do it anyway. But if it's something really important, if I know it truly matters to someone that I actually do what I said I'd do, then I almost always do it. Not always, unfortunately, but nine times out [...]

There was a time, a long, long time ago, when I thought I could be sure about things--things I thought, things I felt, things I knew. At the very least, I thought it was within the realm of possibility to be sure about some things. These days, however, it seems I'm far more uncertain what life is all about than I ever thought I'd be. On the surface, I suppose I'm where I thought I would be at this stage of the game. I mean, I'm not in prison or world famous or [...]

Photo by udannlin I turn 23 today. If my listening habits are any indication, that's old enough to start taking Billy Joel seriously. Last year on my birthday I posted a few of my all-time favorite songs. This year I'm posting yacht rock. You guys should see the playlist I put together for my party tomorrow... it's three hours long. The Peter Frampton --> Eagles segue is going to blow minds and there will be nothing ironic about it. Todd Rundgren - [...]

Of all the Dylan covers I am familiar with perhaps this is the most enigmatic. To what purpose did Todd Rundgren record this and the other covers that went to make up half of 1976's Faithful ? His recording and producing schedule had been punishing with 11 albums in 7 years so perhaps he just wanted to kick back and enjoy. Certainly side 2 would suggest that the muse had not left him as, although they are far simpler than the previous years Initiation , his own material was to a high standard (with the exception [...]

I was all ready to write about today's "singer/songwriter" Todd Rundgren and what an amazing and diverse career he's had...from solo star in the '70's to his work with Utopia and his amazing list of production credits that include The Psychedelic Furs, XTC, Meat Loaf, Badfinger and The New York Dolls (to name just a few) to fronting the reunited Cars...but heading to Todd's website, it seems he's told the entire story himself in a...uh, rather LONG Flash movie you really just can't click out of. (I tried. Several times.) So, pop some pop corn, call the kids into the [...]

I love to watch my blog statistics. It's kind of an obsession. One of my favorites to watch is which countries readers come from. The U.S. is always first, far and away the largest number of hits come from there. Usually, Canada is next, with the rest of the top five rounded out by either France, the U.K., Sweden, Germany or Japan. Well this month it's different. The U.S. is still first, but Poland is second. It's beating Canada by a [...]

I hate it when I can't be in the contrast podcast , but I just couldn't come up with a connection to the theme. The theme is "my brush with fame" and I recollected and recollected but I just couldn't honestly say that I've ever had one. The closest I ever got was when I was a singer in a little jazz trio when I was in college, but that hardly amounts to fame no matter how hard you shake it. I'm excited [...]

O.K. Here's the deal. It's Sunday afternoon, it's raining, the sermons written and I'm bored. Rather than doing the ironing or walking the dog I have come up with a new game. It works like this: 1. Switch on iPod 2. Hit random play 3. Post the first five tracks to the blog no matter how embarrassing they are Here are this week's offerings: Gene Clark – She Don't Care About Time [...]

Something/Anything is a record that can be embarrassing to love. Released in 1972 as Toddy's 3rd solo album, all the parts were played and produced by Runtgreen himself, excluding side 4 which was performed with backing band. Though most of it would feel about right on Lite 97, there's no denying the cool in it, and when people doubt you for throwing it on, well, they just don't get you. The big hits here are I Saw The Light, which you will most likely recognize, and the beautiful Nazz redo, Hello It's Me. Electric [...]

A funny thing happened to Todd Rundgren in the '80s - his commercial solo work get progressively more experimental and inaccessible, while Utopia, formerly his outlet for his more prog-rock, spacey forays, became more and more mainstream. In 1982, Utopia jumped the New Wave train and released a self-titled three-sided (!) album, complete with a snazzy 1982 wardrobe and an MTV video hit with "Feet Don't Fail Me Now" , which presented the Rundrgren-led quartet as cuddly insects: [...]
