I guess I lose what little blogger cred that I have if I don't post an end-of-the-year "Best Of" list before 2012. I'm getting it in just under the wire. These are my favorite albums on this day, the 31st of December, in the year of our lord 2011, and it is subject to change whenever I feel like it. Seriously, it's been a great year for music, and it was really difficult for me to make this list. Feel free to heap praise on me or call me a pretentious overbearing wretch. [...]

by Ben Greenman Phil Ochs was born five months before Bob Dylan and died sixteen months before Elvis Presley, and that tells you all you need to know about him, and that tells you nothing. Ochs was an earnest activist, and a rebel, and a satirist, and a town crier, and a crack-up. He built and dismantled personae with such rapidity that it's sometimes difficult to find the real person who, in theory, provided the foundation on which those personae were built and dismantled. Born in Texas, raised in Ohio, gifted musically and culturally omnivorous, [...]

Todd Snider - Bill Elliot Story I finally got a hold of Todd Snider's latest live disc, which has been out for awhile. If you've ever seen Todd live, then you can probably already guess how enjoyable of a listen it is. If you've never seen Todd live, then you should add it near the top of your bucket list (it's probably more attainable then some of those other things anyways). The 'Bill Elliot Story' that appears on the 2-disc live set [...]

I speak of two Mays on this warm, sunny Spring afternoon: of the request, and of the calendar. Yet the two terms are related, in their way. For Spring is a metaphor of rebirth, and "mother may I" is a sort of rebirth, too: of the moment, of the allowance to move forward, of the soul. Appropriate, I think. This past year, I've given myself permission to act again, treading the boards for the first time since a failure to learn my lines in time caused my high school director to [...]

Todd Snider: Trouble [ purchase ] I have not posted in forever - shame on me! Back in the days when I was a "regular", you could count on me for two or three submissions a week... and Todd Snider's tunes would show up frequently to illustrate my musical points (samplings can be found here , here , here and here )... I first fell in love with him from his debut CD, Songs for the Daily Planet, released in [...]

Regular readers know that I suffer from chronic ear problems brought on by congenitally small eustachian tubes, coupled with a permanent, high-pitched half-hissing, half-ringing noise which worsens significantly when my ears are blocked. Listening to music in this state, I once wrote, is like trying to hear the good stuff underwater, and surrounded by keening whales . What I may not have mentioned before is that several years ago I made the decision to manage these two related medical issues by having tubes installed in both of my ears - a [...]

We've started the budget process over at the school committee table, and the outlook is bleak: State budgets are getting tighter, health insurance takes a bigger bite out of our state-determined minimum funding level every year, and here in Massachusetts, the only way to raise local taxes is to appeal directly to the voters - a tactic we lost by a factor of 5 to 2 just three years ago when we tried to get enough to reopen the middle school library. It's all part of a larger trend, of course. Since 2002, our school [...]

It was just a matter if time before I got around to Hayes Carll . After all, I'm a long time fan of artists cut from the same cloth: Steve Earle, John Prine and Todd Snider in particular. Hayes sounds a lot like Snider, very similar singing voices - and as far as his sense of humor goes, Snider and Prine are blood brothers of Carll (don't get confused on "Bottle In My Hand" though, that is indeed Mr. Snider joining along). As a Rdio subscriber, I'm always jumping on the new releases every Tuesday. [...]

Top show to consider while you keep tabs on @FooFighters for news of a surprise show by that up-and-coming little band: ► Canadian five-piece Mother Mother brings its hooky tunes to the Satellite — the Vancouver band's full-length "Eureka" is out March 15. ► Musical storyteller/humorist Todd Snider , his double-disc live album out earlier this month, headlines the El Rey Theatre. ► Susan James celebrates the release of her new album "Highways, Ghosts, Hearts & Home" with a big party at the Echo featuring, among others [...]

One month into this Boston gig and I already got to cross an artist off of my bucket list. Believe it or not folks, I saw Todd Snider for the first time on Saturday, February 5, at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston. This was my first Boston music outing, and compared to Toronto venues, the Paradise way too nice for me to be hanging out in. It doesn't have the distinctive smell that the Horseshoe has. It doesn't have duct tape holding the walls up like at the El [...]
