by Cosmo Lee "List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they're listening to." This meme has been going around the music blogosphere. Adrien Begrand tagged me with it, but [...]

John Mayer just released a live album on July 1 featuring selections from his performance at The Nokia Theatre in L.A. Admit it, the first time you heard "Your Body Is A Wonderland," you thought it was a catchy make out song from the "guy who sure sounds a lot like Dave Matthews." Then, the onslaught of 15 year-old girls caught on to his talent and liking him turned into an embarrassing chore. OK, maybe it was just me. Since then, I have come to appreciate Mayer and the other oddities and talents that surround him. Case in point: [...]

Between the solo record, the DVD, Mudcrutch and the big homecoming show, we get a sinking feeling about Petty. Like he's cleaning out the attic. Like he knows something we don't. The below finds the Heartbreakers in their original and finest form, with their outta-nowhere debut behind them and celebrating the release of their sophomore followup, "You're Gonna Get It," which dropped two months before the show below, recorded July 16, 1978 at the (still standing) Paradise Rock Club in Boston in a WBCN-sponsored gig. The clear and curious omission is Listen to Her Heart - [...]
John Mayer's cover of "Free Fallin'," as covered on his Where The Light Is CD/DVD, just missed the Hot 100's top 50 in its first week as an iTunes download. Between this and that cheesy Bucket List song, it's clear Mayer isn't going to stick solely to Da Blooze any time soon, for better or worse. So why did John decide to cover this Tom Petty nugget? I'm guessing it has something to do with getting to sing "I'm a bad boy, cuz I don't even miss her" on stage. [ YouTube]
After a short reunion tour with his early band Mudcrutch, Tom Petty is back on the road with his legendary band The Heartbreakers. Yet even though the Heartbreakers were there tonight, there was still plenty of mud. Torrential downpours had left the lawn a soupy, mucky mess. After raining all day, the skies resided long enough for a beautiful evening of music with the veteran rockers who have been playing together for over 30 years now. If you even give a thought to if they are still relevant and still rocking, the sold out crowd should answer any of those [...]

The Hollywood Bowl is a mystical place. There are few venues in this world where, once inside, the rest of the world seems to fade away. Surrounded by hills, trees and a gorgeous Summer night sky, it seems like the Bowl is like a focal instrument for the Universe to speak through. Whomever steps on that stage has the whole of humanity listening. Or so it seems. Anyway, I've been a Tom Petty fan since I was a wee one, so it was with something like awe that I responded [...]

Tom Petty: Mary Jane's Last Dance [ purchase ] I am essentially posting this song to be a bit cheeky and 'muso'. Whilst it does not have the word 'Indiana' in the title, I have purposefully eschewed the other Indiana songs in my music library in favour of this...a song that was originally called Indiana Girl . If you click that link, it will take you to the Wikipedia page about the [...]

This post is the first in a multi-part tribute to great cover versions from any time and any place. I love when an artist takes a song made popular by another and redoes it, not in the same old way as the original version, but in a fresh, and new way; completely making it their own. I dedicate this series to those who are brave to take a great song of another, and put out their own unique version of it for all to hear, and judge against the original. On with the covers! You Really [...]
How To Turn A Mid-90s MTV VMA Winner Into Reverb-Heavy Space Disco, Part 22. Starring Tom Petty and Tiedye.
Adios Willie. The Mets manager was fired this morning after his team underperformed consistently throughout the season. I'm not sure how you can blame a guy after his closer blows three straight games in the 9th, his ace had been hurt for the first quarter of the season and all star short stop only appears all starish sporadically. Nevertheless, these are the Mets and this is NY. Either win or go home. Willie...we hardly knew ya. Time to Move On - Tom Petty Apologize - One Republic
I wish my top 5 were from the new Old 97's and Amy Ray albums, but I haven't convinced myself to part with the money yet. Soon.... Sorry if any of these are repeats...I feel like I may have posted To Absent Votes and So Long, Superman before, but that may have been elsewhere. Anyway... Firewater - So Long, Superman . This song just rocks. Good strong rhythm, excellent for singing along. This man knows how to string words together to make lyrics that get stuck in my [...]
I'm hardly watching any music videos these days. It's not just because MTV and VIVA have turned into crappy soap-opera and dating-show channels, but most of the artists I listen to these days just don't make videos to their songs. I sometimes miss those good ol' days when Music Television really was about music... anyone else remembers MusicBox , or Most Wanted with Ray Cokes , or that famous mullet Pat Sharp [...]
I went to the store to buy the new Mudcrutch album. The cheapest I could find it was $11.99. I can't believe there's still some label out there who would push a first week CD for more than $9.99. Have they still not learned from the Napster years? So I went home and decided to buy it online for under $10. But before I bought it...I listened to it one more time...and didn't like it as much.

Yeah ok, Tom Petty wasn't there in person. But after hearing him throwing down a couple of weeks in the Superbowl XLII half-time show his songs were on my mind. Our pastor was preaching about Ephesians 6:10-18 and I just thought ' I Won't Back Down ', one of the songs he perfomed at the half-time show , was a pretty good description of how Christians are to stand against the schemes of the devil. So, our praise band played Tom Petty 's song during the offering. The Forest Park Community Church [...]
I Won't Back Down -Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers I saw him perform this at the Superbowl (like everyone else in North America) and it's been stuck in my head since then. I'm just beginning to realize how much he rules, though. buy What's A Girl To Do? -Bats for Lashes I love this song, and the video is killer to boot. My friend got me into her when she saw her at a music festival in Europe. buy Lilywhite [...]

i guess if i wore a girdle like seagal i'd be pretty uncomfortable, too. although. i gotta say, Under Siege was pretty bad ass. Tom Petty "You Don't Know How It Feels (Fade)" ( das music on point)

In anticipation of what I'm sure will be a rockin' Super Bowl Half-Time show, here's a look back at Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, circa 1990. You can argue this was Petty at his peak in popularity. He was riding the wave from his very popular first solo album, Jeff Lynne-produced Full Moon Fever , which was released in 1989. Enjoy... Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Wilmington, NC May 18th, 1990 {{Here comes my ZIP [...]
