This is Tom Russell , performing live in concert at Hollandsche, Rading, Netherlands, back on the 16th September 2005. Tom is an American singer-songwriter. Although most strongly identified with the Texas Country music tradition, his music also incorporates elements of folk, Tex-Mex, and the cowboy music of the American West. Many of his songs have been recorded by other artists, including Johnny Cash, k. d. lang, Guy Clark, Joe Ely, Nanci Griffith, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Iris Dement, Dave Alvin, and Suzy Bogguss. Tom has also done collaborative work with renowned cowboy poet Paul [...]

The storytelling gifts that Tom Russell has brought to songs for 35 years have reached new peaks on Mesabi, another stunning album of Southwest-borderlands rock.Russell begins this wide-ranging collection with "Mesabi," a song named for the Minnesota iron range of Bob Dylan's childhood, imagining how strongly those early influences struck young ears. Singing of the "Bethlehem of the

"The kid heard Howlin' Wolf every night on the radio, from those airwaves blasting all the way, Nogales, Mexico..." Wherein Tom Russell lovingly salutes Dylan, and the whole North Country with it. Complete with mariachi trumpets, this is the expressive title track of his new album. "Some things never change..." Tom Russell - Mesabi MP3
Tom Russell's Mesabi offers powerful meditations on heroes and legends. The title of Tom Russell's new album, Mesabi, refers to the Mesabi Iron Range in northeastern Minnesota, one of the world's largest deposits of iron ore, a cold, inhospitable place where hard people do hard work. But in Russell's world, and that of many fans of modern music, the Mesabi Range and the nearby town of Hibbing stand for something very different, even mythical: as Russell puts it, that region is "the Bethlehem of the...

Tom Russell is a master songwriter. Having had his songs recorded by Johnny Cash, Nanci Griffith, K.D. Lang and many others artists should make it no big surprise that the release of his 26th album is just around the corner. Mesabi is out on Shout! Factory Sept. 6th but you can hear it all right here. Lucinda Williams and Calexico Join Tom Russell on Dylan's 'A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall'
Deep in the texture of Tom Russell's songs exists a well-examined stockpile of history told from the point-of-view of a sociologist with nimble literary prowess. With his larger than life baritone and rustic intelligentsia style, Tom Russell.com is the kind of astute writer who can dig deep into lore, history, and popular culture effortlessly. Whether spinning songs about Navajo rugs, the Seine River, Nina Simone, Africa, or bygone Hollywood, Russell is a distinct brand of songwriter with few peers. Sometimes hard-bitten, sometimes softly sentimental, sometimes sardonic as hell, Russell mixes his past and present - sociology graduate, teacher, cab [...]

You may not be familiar with the name Tom Russell , but you damn well outta be. A published author and respected artist, music is Russell's day job, and the years have seen his songs covered by luminaries with names like Johnny Cash, Dave Van Ronk, Jerry Jeff Walker, Doug Sahm and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. Part troubadour, part Beatnik poet, his talent is such that Lawrence Ferlinghetti (he of Go fame) asserts that Russell's characters capture, "the wounded heart of America." Not at all insignificant praise. [...]
It seems like Tom Russell has been around forever, usually rocking his country-folk approach, with hints of Americana fueled by Mexicana. He's got a new record coming out on Shout Factory in September titled Mesabi , and I've really been channeling the music of my father today, so this track definitely hits home. But, for those of you unfamiliar with the veteran, you'll find vocal reminiscent of Roky E , which is no surprise since both men have been rocking the Texas [...]

Sunday already? High time for Wild Weekend #49. Let´s see, what do we have here... Well, Tomatito salutes his uncle in Andalusian style, while Tom Russell spends some precious time in the last bar on earth. Meanwhile in the female vocals department, we´ve got a Helen, a Tracyanne and even a Bezunesh. Cool, no? In any case, be sure to have a wild one, y´all. First we move to sunny Spain to meet up with Tomatito, the virtuoso longhaired gitano who succeeded Paco de Lucía as the principal [...]

Woody Guthrie was born today in 1912 in Okemah, Oklahoma . He needs no introduction. I imagine his music has seeped into the lives of nearly every artist I've ever featured on Carnival Saloon. So, to mark what would have been his 98th birthday, here are Woody Guthrie songs by four of my favourites. MP3: Bob Dylan - This Land is Your Land (live) "Woody Guthrie tore everything in his path to pieces. For me it was an epiphany, like some heavy anchor had just plunged into the [...]

The El Paso Trilogy - Part 1 Marty Robbins' El Paso was a number one hit in 1959 on both the country and pop charts. I'm sure I probably first heard it on one of the country compilations my dad used to play in the car when we were kids. I didn't really hear the song though until I bought Tom Russell's tremendous album Indians Cowboys Horses Dogs after seeing him play for the first time at the Cambridge Folk Festival in 2006 . The way [...]

Long live the weekend, the weekend is here. And it´s gonna be another wild one... My iPod shuffle function picks the tunes, and we´ll just have to wait and see what comes up. Ready, set, go. Let´s get this show on the road with some intense blues from the inimitable Robert Pete Williams. Recorded live in Angola Prison , where the guitarist was doing time for fatally shooting a (white) man in what was probably self-defence. "Some got six months, but me and my buddies got a lifetime here..." These ´59 [...]
Both of today's songs are from The Man from God Knows Where. I can quote what I've read but I'd rather send you to read Tom Russell's own words. The Man From God Knows Where Talks to Bill Nevins MP3 File yousendit
That would be Iris Dement joining her. MP3 File yousendit
So I am several days late and several hundred dollars short on this one, but better late than never. On December 15 a collective of like-minded bloggers launched the premiere of The Bird List . This list acknowledges what we in the blogging community consider the best in country music for 2009, while flipping the proverbial bird at the mainstream country music establishment. 30 amazing blogs participated in making this list, and I encourage you to check all of them out. Each blogger ranked their Top 20 albums with each album being rewarded points [...]
