Whoops, sorry, I actually had this done on time, but April Fool's! It turns out Uncle Sam actually thinks I'm now grown-up enough to click "publish" all on my own! ...Click any key? I don't see any "any" key! Anyway, as I mentioned in the introductory write-up, this month's selections are all about proving it's not what you know, but WHO you know. I noodled with the idea of maybe instituting some kind of point sytem; he whose playlist mentions the most artists wins. But it's not whether you win or lose, it's how [...]
With a break from their duties as the rhythm section for Talking Heads, husband and wife Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth took the opportunity to make a record decidedly less serious than their work with that band. Operating under the name Tom Tom Club, the pair enlisted guest musicians such as guitarist Adrian Belew and percussionist Steven Stanley for a bright, breezy disc of whimsical fun. To everyone's surprise, it became a smash. Their 1982 self-titled album first caught the attention of club goers with its blend of dance and rock music which incorporated elements of hip-hop, reggae, [...]

Tina Weymouth and Grandmaster Flash - NYC, 1981 (credit: Laura Levine) Alright, first off, how great is the above photo? Yeah, that's right. The other night, while I was programming a DJ set, I was inspired to dig out my copy of the Tom Tom Club's 1981, self-titled, debut. Not unlike the vibe [...]
25 years ago, no one expected a little side project from the bassist and drummer of art-rock/New Wave combo Talking Heads to be much of a hit, much less become a touchstone in dance music, or be sampled over and over. But that's exactly what happened to Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth's debut Tom Tom Club album and its immortal party single, "Genius of Love". It may seem strange now but keep in mind, when the first Tom Tom Club album was released in 1982 Talking Heads had one minor mainstream hit under their belts and were still [...]

Some quick non-music rambling, I saw Pan's Labyrinth yesterday night and I have to say that it's one of the most magnificent, beautiful and awe-inspiring movies I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. I can't remember the last time I left a theater so happy that I saw a movie. Before you start reading this blog posting you need to go see Pan's Labyrinth! Turn off your computer. Steal a car. (But I have a car) I said STEAL A CAR! (okay) [...]
