These three artists -- all completely unknown -- pay homage to a variety of alternative-rock styles, ranging from Pavement-inspired alternative to '70s psych-rock. They all sound like you could find them performing in a friend's basement; it's part of their DIY appeal, and one that does not detract from their strong songwriting and interesting modes of production.

Luna — 23 Minutes In Brussels From Penthouse ( Beggars Banquet ; 1995) Say a prayer / Tell me do you miss me

Stoutly refusing to record his passionate songs under anything less than his own terms (in his New Jersey home on a TASCAM MiniStudio), F.M. Cornog, under the name East River Pipe, has released seven albums since 1994 that can stand toe-to-toe with anything by your favorite indie rockers over the past 20 years. Although working full-time [...]
Just because they are a "New Wave" band doesn't mean they don't love a good jam session. Be patient and hand around for Tom Verlaine's final solo towards the end of this 10 minute long epic, its one of the greatest ever put down.

Tom Verlaine's first solo album is pretty much on the level of Television. The man's got some kind of style, which I suppose is how he makes riffy rock n' roll seem several steps beyond Rolling Stones-esque triteness. I love that little piano bit. Sounds like a cartoon cat walking through a dark alley. Tom Verlaine - Souvenir From A Dream

Oh, to have been young and living in New York City during the late seventies. Each night offered a myriad of opportunities to catch new and revolutionary bands tearing apart the local scene. How do you choose between the Ramones at CBGB's or the Heartbreakers at Max's? Patty Smith. Blondie. Television. The Talking Heads . The choices were mindbending. What we're going to do then is look at some of the live recorded output of two of these seminal bands and use that as a [...]
There is something very likable about Slothbear, even in addition to their name. Their sound recalls the best parts of vintage college-rock, which is presented with clarity through the band's surprisingly adept methods of self-production. The feel of restraint that is often associated with home recordings is absent on Slothbear's debut EP Qids, and instead [...]
There's only one place that boasts both The Boss and The Situation. That's right-with Bruce Springsteen taking on Ticketmaster and the cast of the "Jersey Shore" taking on tans, hair spray and dance floors , it's clear that New Jersey is taking over. While the Garden State enjoys its time in the spotlight, our job is to hip you to local bands making moves. We've already talked to dozens of Jersey musicians on the rise, including Titus Andronicus, Vivian Girls, The Feelies and Jessie Baylin. We've scouted dozens more, including Real Estate, Screaming Females, The [...]
THE GRIP OF LOVE James Brown Tom Verlaine Elektra : 1979 [Buy It] Over the years, here at Moistworks, we've considered love in all its forms, at least as seen through the prism of the pop song. This year, we are standing down. Our weapons are holstered. Orders from above: the topic has been designated as too tragicomic. The note from above read, in part, "Give it a rest. If you see it out and about, arrest it. If you see something about it, give it back." The [...]
Birthed from the very fertile improvisation and post rock scene in Chicago comes the collaboration of guitarists David Daniell and Douglas McCombs. David Daniell's career dates back to 1996 with work in the improvisation group San Agustin . Between his collaborations and solo work he has established a pretty substantial recorded career. Daniell met Doug McCombs when they toured together in 2006 in Rhys Chatham's six-guitar Die Donnergötter band. McCombs notably plays bass and guitar in Tortoise as well as his solo project Brokeback and Eleventh Dream Day. This meeting cemented a relationship of the two music fans where they exchanged [...]
Repetition and pretentiousness are sometimes aligned in music, especially when something not even worth hearing once is repeated continuously. Listeners do not want artists forcing anything on them, especially when it is a frustratingly linear loop. The increasing abundance of quality artists like Animal Collective and Air France suggests that the genre is attaining more [...]

Of the Ranaldo/Moore performance the Fender website says: "When their fingers proved unsuitable for achieving the next level of dissonance, the musicians used tuning forks [...]

Vue, way back when Bellavista Temptation By Your Side Tom Verlaine Souvenir From a Dream Bellavista has a very storied pedigree, and if you're at all curious about the group, it's probably because of that pedigree - which is to say that this band, probably because of the capricious nature o' the music industry, isn't as high-profile [...]
Somewhere along the way the Feelies became obscure. Relegated to the pantheon of rock "influences," bands who are known more for inspiring other, more famous bands than for their own work. It wasn't always that way.

Valentine's Day is here, and for the romantic sort (of which I consider myself) I can only say that It's proved time again to be the source of the greatest humiliation and bitterest of feelings in past relationships. Why is this? Great expectations and diminishing returns. I guess that's my problem. The good news is, I'm single this year, and I don't need to set myself up for any Hallmark induced hysteria. Don't get me wrong. I believe in love, but do we really need to set aside a single day of the year to [...]
