Flow Festivalin esiintyjäkaarti on täydentynyt uusilla artisteilla ja samalla on julkistettu festivaalin päiväkohtainen ohjelma. Myös päiväliput ovat nyt myynnissä. Uusina niminä artistikatraaseen liittyy mm. brittiläinen new wave -legenda The Human League , kokeellisen rockin merkkinimi Battles , hehkutettu uuden pop-musiikin innovaattori Jamie Woon , Hot Chip -yhtyeen nokkamiehen Alexis Taylorin viimeisin projekti About Group , sekä The Other Sound -konseptia tähdittävä Murcof + AntiVJ . Lisäksi uusia Flow-nimiä ovat ruotsalainen folk-sisarusduo First Aid Kit , "new grassin" mestari Tony Trischka ja kovat kotimaiset Delay Trees [...]

Quick but heartfelt kudos to indie label Grinding Tapes for posting this timely in-house take on this classic year's end carol from The Points North . The flutes, guitar, and ragged vocal harmonies combine exquisitely, revealing a delicious old-school minimalist pubfolk perfect for a snowed-in New Year's Eve. The Points North: Auld Lang Syne Just as potent, in it's own way, is Sam Billen 's achingly fragile banjo-tinged [...]
Though I believe that folk, most especially in the way it functions as a channel of engagement and public discourse, is by definition an agency of cultural change, I have been reluctant to use this blog as a forum for advocating explicit change of any one type. Perpetuating the relevance of folk as an agenda in and of itself, it seems to me, precludes taking sides for any particular agenda which might be carried by folk, lest we alienate opposing values, and in doing so, diminish the potential of folk to remain dialogic. But it's [...]

Our weekend trip to upstate South Carolina was wonderful. The Artisphere International Arts Festival in downtown Greenville was a delightful blend of artisans, musicians, and culinary treats. The beautiful Falls Park along the Reedy River was a perfect backdrop for the festival. Greenville is nestled in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and we did plenty of exploring while we were there. As paddlers we were particularly interested in the many rivers and lakes of the tri-state (GA, SC, and NC) area. Perhaps best known is the Chattooga River made famous by the movie [...]

It's human nature to turn inward in times of timeturning. It's reassuring that we do; it bespeaks our still-close relationship with nature, and the planet. In a world long teetering on the verge of disaster, our innate need to constantly reground ourselves in history and ecology gives me more hope than anything at the future and continued existence of the human race. That it happens everywhere, regardless of country or creed, only reinforces my faith in all of us. May your year turn joyfully. May you put to [...]

Musikfest starts today. What is Musikfest? Only the coolest, most awesome 10 days of music (mostly for free) on the East Coast. Maybe anywhere. If you are in Bethlehem over the next 10 days, maybe check out one of performers below. Or just get some of those wonderful Musikfest money-tickets, buy a 22 ounce beer and POLKA all night long!!! Either way, look for The Duke, The Duchess and Duke Jr. to be traipsing around the 'fest. To get you excited, I made this mix of mp3s [...]
