Now the 99 percent can get fired up with 'Occupy This Album,' an environmentally-friendly digital release featuring musical heavyweights like Crosby and Nash , Devo , Lucinda Williams , Yo La Tengo , Toots and the Maytals and Third Eye [...]

I was feeling ill. My whole body ached and shivered as I climbed into bed. I hadn't been sleeping very well, and I had planned on an early night. I'd just pulled the duvet over my head when I realised it was the date of Toots and the Maytals . I sighed, crawled out from my duvet and pulled on my shoes. I'd heard he was still good but I had my doubts. He was old, and I was under the weather. He might still be able to sing, but I kept imagining him standing motionless [...]
With the days getting shorter, and the nights getting colder, September is upon us, and it is getting very close to the end of festival season, with only student Mecca, Bestival , left for us to hide and forget ourselves for a few days. In a year where the whole festival approach was blown apart and we saw cancellations, floodings and Reading offering free tickets on the very morning of their first day, Bestival has pulled a genuinely unrivalled line-up out the bag, boasting exclusive appearances from The Cure and Bjork , alongside the terminally overplayed [...]

Tomorrow we head down to the first Wilderness Festival , taking place on our back door in the beautiful Cornbury Park Estate. Previously this lovely venue has hosted the Cornbury Festival, which has thankfully now moved elsewhere as (trust us) it has the worse possible line-up you could ever imagine for an event of this type. Anyway, the Wilderness is, as we say, a different kettle of fish featuring Gogol Bordello, Toots and the Maytals, Dry The River, Hypnotic Ensemble, CW Stoneking and Hayseed Dixie all creating the sounds today. Antony and the Johnsons [...]

One of the most important reggae labels and catalogues in existence, Trojan Records, is to unveil some exciting activity for the late summer, to give its famously loyal fan base good reason to be cheerful for the August Bank Holiday. On August 29th, the label, which was founded by Island Records' Chris Blackwell and Lee Gopthal in 1968, will release The Story Of Trojan Records box set - a stunning, newly compiled archive of classics, rarities and unreleased material across 5 CDs. Celebrating this great label's illustrious history, the collection includes not just the better known tracks but [...]

Gathering of the Vibes at Seaside Park, Bridgeport, CT - July 21-24 Words: Carla Danca Photos: Jeremy Gordon Outside of a few questions that aren't suitable for print, "So how many have you been to?" is probably the most asked question around Gathering of the Vibes . Sixteen years after its humble beginnings as Deadhead Heaven - A Gathering of the Tribe on the campus of SUNY Purchase, Vibes has become one of the Northeast's largest annual festivals and one of the oldest as well. In a [...]

After a Saturday jam-packed with music at the 15th annual All Good Music Festival , I was looking forward to Sunday's lighter lineup. One of the biggest challenges of open field tent camping at a music festival is partying into the wee hours and trying to get adequate sleep, without being cooked alive in your tent in the morning summer sun like broccoli in a bamboo steamer. After waking up in my own personal sauna and cooling off in the West Virginia mountain air I headed up [...]

Toots & The Maytals: Reggae Got Soul

This is Toots and The Maytals live in New York back in 1979. This would have been the latter part of their set on the night, as at this time they would normally play around a dozen songs and usually include a few hits such as Monkey Man, Pressure Drop and the like. There is some dispute as to the venue, The Bottom Line Club has been cited elsewhere however there is no record of them performing at the club that year in the archives, however WNEW would regularly cover live performances [...]

Reggae legends Toots and the Maytals are touring non-stop through the end of July, and they're coming to Brooklyn twice this summer. They play Brooklyn Bowl on July 19 and 25 . Tickets are on sale now for both shows ( July 19 and July 25 ). The 7/19 show will opened by Lukas Nelson and the 7/25 show by Fear Nuttin' Band . Toots' tour ends 7/31 at Hollywood Bowl, but they are also scheduled to play Jam [...]

Well, it is. And it has been for rather a long time. While it makes me wonder what on earth is going on with the seasons, ultimately it works out pretty nicely for me. Here are some songs that should be listened to while drinking a (fancy) cider in one of the Queen's Parks with your friends. Maybe even in one of the sun loungers, if you're prepared to get fleeced. Toots & The Maytals - Take Me Home Country Road [ Buy ] [...]

Good morning everyone and welcome to another edition of Lazy Sundays. The artist of choice for this week is Toots and the Maytals , a Jamaican musical group well known for their ska and reggae musical styles. Lead by Fred "Toots" Hibbert, The Maytals became one of the most popular vocal groups in Jamaica during the 19602s alongside other such successful music groups of the time, The Wailers . This song, 54-46 That's My Number was a breakthrough for the group and describes Toots' time in prison for an arrest for [...]
Over the years, the industry's seen a great influx of music festivals, which has lead to a perversion of sorts to the typical medium: It's no longer just a party in the field. Lately, a few fests have taken things to the sea, going down Lonely Island-style (hint: On a Boat! ). Yet before the likes of 311 and Kid Rock were hired to serenade folks on the waves, Jam Cruise was the one seafaring festival you could count on. It's the one that started it all. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, the MSC [...]
The lineup for Jam Cruise was announced first thing this morning here on the West Coast, and I couldn't be happier that I've already taken the plunge and pre-booked a cabin for the 10th anniversary of the floating festival that everybody has been raving about for years. This will be my first year on the boat, so I'll be seeing plenty of unbelievably great music all while sailing the seas and partying with my fellow like-minded fans. Can't wait. One of the bigger reveals of the lineup has been the port destinations that [...]

Jam Cruise 10 sets sail from Ft. Lauderdale, FL on January 9 aboard the MSC Poesia and will visit Labadee, Haiti and Falmouth, Jamaica before returning to Ft. Lauderdale on January 14. Over the first nine Jam Cruises a number of artists have proven themselves to be ideal performers for the community-oriented vibe of the trip. Jam Cruise 102s lineup brings nearly all of those acts back to the open seas including HT faves Umphrey's McGee, Galactic, Soulive, Perpetual Groove, The New Mastersounds, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe and Railroad Earth. [...]

Juice Crew - The Symphony Well to kick off my first post running drop on a classic I racked my brains trying to think of what mind blowing bits of sampling greatness should I put forward, this proved to be hard as i was just over thinking the whole thing . So I've just gone with tracks that I love to listen to when I'm kickin old skool and I hope you will enjoying learning about as the 'Drop on a Classic' journey continues. So the Juice Crew brain child of legendary producer Marley Marl and [...]

The initial lineup announcement for Gathering of the Vibes 2011 has been released and features a number of Dead-related acts as well as a few surprises. Both Furthur and the Rhythm Devils return in 2011 with Bobby and Phil's latest band set to headline on Friday, July 22, and Mickey and Billy's group set to appear on Sunday, July 24. HT faves the Levon Helm Band, moe., McLovins and The New Mastersounds are also signed on for Vibes 2011 along with Elvis Costello and the Imposters, Jane's Addiction, the Dark Star Orchestra, Assembly of Dust and many other [...]
