During last week's episode of the Office I got really excited while watching a commercial for some ugly SUV. "Why am I getting excited watching this car commercial?" I asked myself. Then I noticed that the background music was The Clash's cover of Pressure Drop. I should mention that in college I played this song so loud in the dorm that my neighbor started throwing her shoes at our adjoining wall (I don't know why she thought this would do any good.) MP3: The Clash- Pressure Drop (Toots and the Maytals Cover) [...]

Toots & The Maytals: Get Up, Stand Up [1979] from the classic Pass The Pipe Reggae Sunsplash 2K7 continues (we seem to have heeded Davy 's clarion call to add more reggae to the blogosphere. Cheers, Davy -- and happy birthday!) This is an LP my dad had so I heard this a lot as a lad. Indeed, this mp3 has been lovingly ripped from my dad's original copy, freshly retrieved from his basement! (Cheers, Dad.) Note that this is not a [...]

Since I started reading "Love Is A Mix Tape," I've been revisiting some of my old mixes. This was the first one I made for The Duchess' (new) car (at the time), a Mini Cooper. I like it for the film dialog and hodgepodge of tunes. 1. Tomoyasu Hotei ~ Battle Without Honor or Humanity 2. The Who ~ Baba O'Riley 3. Jay ~ "Ball Lickers" (from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) 4. Beastie Boys ~ Root [...]

Heather (from I AM FUEL...) put together a double disc of driving music. I made this mix for my wife, who likes to drive fast. Figured now's a good time to share as driving music is whizzing thru the blogsphere. It's a nice collection of tunes that goes from Latin to mashup to "heavy metal" back to Latin, some smooth electronic, then toss in some hippity-hop and finish off with a Minnesota classic (yes, I am a Gearhead). Sidebar: Is there anything worse than driving to work on slushy/salt-drenched roads when you're out of windshield [...]

What started off as an online discussion of a bizarre, borderline offensive golden age comic book panel has blossomed into a long overdue, righteous crusade . Too long have our primate cousins been portrayed by the media as monstrous threats or humorous caricatures. Whether they sported diapers and tricycles or city-killing Kryptonite eye beams , the apes in question were reduced to banal stereotypes by an unspoken, anti-simian conspiracy. It for this reason that I've decided to launch the Gorilla Rock On Dubious Demand (G.R.O.D.D.) Initiative, a theme week entirely dedicated to monkeys, apes, and other [...]

I've not been to the Notting Hill Carnival for a couple of years. So I was all up for going this year, then I only went and broke my toe a couple of weeks ago. It's still not quite right, and after having someone almost stamp on it at The Legion last week , I figured that I wouldn't risk getting it trampled on by the crazy crush at the Carnival. So I stayed at home and listened to reggae. I actually meant to do this post on Monday, but y'know, [...]

Some dub and reggae flavored music for these melting days we've been having here lately at my city. I'll start with the classic reggae tune "I chase the devil" from Max Romeo which was later used as a sample on a certain Prodigy song and it comes from the album "The War in Babylon" which is an excellent album from start to finish and you should hunt it down immediatly if you like this sort of music. Next comes a track from Moderat, which is a collaboration between Modeselektor & Apparat (therefore, moderat, get it?), the song [...]
There is nothing quite like an ice cold drink on a hot summer day. Musically speaking, reggae is that drink. Songs that bring to mind the tropics. Sunshine, blue skies, sandy beaches, palm trees, ocean breezes, etc... Originally by Toots & The Maytals , and featured in the 1972 film The Harder They Come starring Jimmy Cliff, "Pressure Drop" is probably (ok almost certainly) my favorite reggae song of all time. I can't really give a specific reason why I like the song so much. It's just a grrreat upbeat [...]

"It was Bob Marley who made reggae into an international phenomenon. In the wake of his success in the 1970s came a host of other names, and it wasn't long before reggae became an established genre of music. But reggae was simply the growth, the development, of what had been happening in Jamaican music.Beginning with ska, and then rock steady, the loudest island in the world had declared its real musical independence, and had already made an imprint on the world, albeit a small one." Rest the rest here . [...]
