Did you notice it - the most important and momentous piece of news across the internet this week? No, not that in the UK nearly 1 million young people aged under 24 are now unemployed, nor worldwide that President Obama has promised the 'toughest sanctions' on Iran over the alleged bomb plot, nor even the celebrity news that Beyonce was accused of faking her pregnancy with a false bump. There was something that surpassed all of this. [...]

Pro tip: if you're not going to Binnacle this weekend, steer clear of Great Eastern Street - it's going to be a road block. The inaugural "micro-festival of future sounds" takes place this weekend at The Old Blue Last (which is, incidentally, newly equipped with Funktion 1s), providing an unmissable opportunity to see every band you've read about on a blog over the last six months, but missed live. The festival has been described as a tiny (very tiny), British cousin for SXSW. Certainly, what it lacks in Texan drawl, it will undoubtedly make [...]
Two big pieces of news dropped yesterday evening after the MS Mansion Monkeys had shuttered our gates for the day. Which label a band signs to might seem insignificant to some fans, but there's actually a lot at stake; think of the way a label treats and nurtures a band as similar to how parents [...]

London four piece Torches pricked our ears back in August, with the brooding, experimental "Towerblock Confetti" setting the bar particularly high. continue reading >>
London based Torches release their debut video this week for VTOO. And from the opening key I was sold. There's just something about an organ sound that wins me over each and every time. An atmospheric effort coupled with the bands brooding style much like Chapel Club and White Lies. Really looking forward to catching them live in the coming weeks. f : www.facebook.com/Torchesband w : www.torchesband.com
While the conventional festival season may have been swept beneath moist autumnal leaves, twigs, branches and so on and so forth, something wicked and wonderful this way comes in the form of Binnacle . Billed as 'a micro festival of future sounds', around forty acts already making impactive ripples on the ponds, lakes, and blogs of the online atmosphere are this weekend to take to Great Eastern Street's The Old Blue Last for what looks to be the live circuit's equivalent to Hype Machine's musical aggregation of the world wide web. Saturday is to be headlined by [...]
Torches are a band about whom you will undoubtedly be hearing rather more in the coming months. The East London four-piece share a house, record in a windowless basement, and write pensive, brooding songs about growing up - and, in the case of 'VTOO', about flying bombs falling on Mile End Park. Torches really come into their own live, having suddenly appeared in the last couple of months as a fully-formed, perfectly realised pop band. Catch them at Binnacle this weekend.
New Delhi metal act Undying Inc is touring Norway this month alongside local Norwegian metal act Torch. The metal act from the capital will be playing two shows alongside Torch in Norway as a part of an event called India 2011. The Norwegian metal act will return to India with Undying Inc to play six shows in India, alongside Bangalore metal act Final Surrender (who recently played a gig in Delhi alongside Guillotine, Zygnema photos here), Mumbai metal band Demonic Resurrection and Social Suicide from Norway, during the Bangalore leg [...]

Check out LA buzz band Foster the People on tour in NYC, where they did a special "unplugged" version of their hit song, "Pumped Up Kicks". We may be tired of hearing this on the radio, but this version refreshed our appreciation... The band is currently touring in the US with Reptar and Cults , check out their tour schedule and grab tickets before they sell out!

Photo via Bright Eyes' Facebook page Bright Eyes is one of those bands that make you want to lounge around all day, drowning in a sea of beautiful, melancholic guitars and emotion-driven vocals from front man Conor Oberst. Add in contributions from multi-instrumentalist Mike Mogis, Nate Walcott (trumpet, piano) and an array of collaborators, and you have a group that captivates with a combination of indie rock and folk. Since the release of their fourth album, Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the [...]
Listen to stoner metal band Torche's cover of Guided By Voice's 'Exit Flagger.'

Underground metal is generally a willfully insular world, but anthemic Florida stompers Torche don't care about any of that. Their surging stomp is as much Superchunk as it is Slayer, and they cover three songs from indie-nation heroes Guided By Voices on a new split EP with Part Chimp. Right now, one of those covers, Torche's faithful take on the Propeller track " Exit Flagger ," is streaming at Pitchfork . Torche also cover "Postal Blowfish" and "Unleashed! The Largehearted Boy" on that EP, which is out 11/5 on Chunklet Industries .

Ever been to a micro-festival? In fact, what is a micro-festival? No, we're not sure either. One thing we are sure of is that if the line up is good enough then we're attracted. Today we want to talk about one that's come under our radars, with a particularly decent lineup, that we think may just be worth your effort. Binnacle is a two day line up of bands hosted at The Old Blue Last in Shoreditch this weekend (on 15th and 16th September). It's focus is on emerging music, although in all honesty some [...]

by BBG Torche at MHoW ( more by Justin Tyler ) Torche will hit the road with the UK's Part Chimp for a string of East Coast dates, according to recent tweets by the band. Though the full tour routing has yet to be revealed, the dates will include an appearance at Mercury Lounge on November 9th with Dirty Fences , and tickets go on sale [...]
Bad things, man, bad things. The video for "Dirt & Tears" — the new single from Torches (who have changed their name from Torches in Trees ) — is full of creepy intrigue, betrayal and murder. It's so dark and psychopathic, in fact, that if the Los Angeles trio ever does a straight-ahead love song you're going to wonder what they had for breakfast. (We doubt if it would be anything like what was consumed in Brandon Lopez and Mike Pagan's video.) The band is working on a follow-up to their two EPs and the "Dirt & [...]

Our stream today comes from Noord-Holland, Netherlands-based Sweet Empire . We described their prior 7" ,The Flood as " Descendents/ALL-influenced pop-punk ." We've got a stream of the band's new full-length, This Season Needs Torches , due out September 3. You can check it out on their Punknews.org Profile .
