Das Racist at Sasquatch / photo by Alex Crick Is it a joke? Is it not a joke? Recently at a show in Germany, Das Racist 's Heems (a.k.a. Himanshu Suri) spilled the beans: "You guys wanna know the secret? ... Das Racist is breaking up and we're not a band anymore." Though Heems was alone when he made that statement, Kool A.D. tweeted soon afterwards: "for the record i quit das racist 2 months ago and was asked by our manager not to announce it yet." Though we didn't get to catch him at CMJ, it seems one of this year's winners was Calvin Love , who received a resounding review from Vice for his performance at Aquarium Drunkard 's showcase. We've since become fans of the Canadian-born artist, whose debut album, New Radar , comes out today on the aforementioned blog's label, Autumn Tone . To celebrate, Calvin has made a playlist for us featuring eight of his favorite tracks of late. Check it out after the jump. STREAM: Calvin Love [...]

To understand how much of a treat this Friday was, I guess it makes sense to first explain how major a let-down Thursday turned out to be. With a tight schedule sorted for the last two stretches, I'd gambled on the fact that, venturing from one venue to the next, I'd eventually find a few good NYC bands to write about, or at least some that worked with the scenes we cover. But no. Not in the slightest. A complete failure. - Read Tracy Mamoun's report of CMJ's Day 3-4 here . - In the picture and Streaming: [...]

The Biscuits and Gravy mixes are the results of "leftover" promotional mp3s from past mixes. For one reason or another, these mp3s didn't fit onto a mix at the time of release. The mp3s sit on a hard drive, all alone until they are united with mp3s who have suffered a similar fate. These tracks are ready to make you sing out loud, dance, ponder your existence, and prevent you from smashing in your dashboard on that long commute to work. Download it, burn to CD, load it on your audio device, do what you want, but most of all [...]

After almost two years together, the scuzz/surf/grunge/jangle outfit know as Night Manager is calling it quits. IMPOSE reports on the breakup: [G]uitarist Ezana Edwards did mention there were some tensions in the band that came to a head when David Tassy quit to join Total Slacker last month. With the split, the members decided to pursue other things rather than continue on. To celebrate their demise the band is releasing their first and last 7-song self-titular EP. This here is track number three. [...]

Somewhere, creeping through scattered reverberations of vocals and guitars, Total Slacker' s sonic beauty splinters through their sarcastic lyrics and lethargic lo-fi vibe. Tucker Rountree and Emily Jane belt out undeniable, neck-tingling harmonies atop steady drum grooves and searing guitar solos, leaving little to the imagination of the vast range of talents this band possesses. Total Slacker brings all the warmth and charisma of Summer of Love surf music, with a witty side that was all too ironic to rear its stylized head in the 60s. See them live at Public Assembly on 09.21.- [...]

Filed under: Monthly Mixtape Flickr For the past 30 days, we've sat here wondering what next month will bring. Will July bear more jobs, better pay, less zombies and no more EDM? Will my 16-year-old brother actually pass his driver's test? Will we accept that Anderson Cooper is a gay man? Who's to say? What I do know is this, we have 30 songs for you to plunder and ponder. We started off June with a [...]
