Sludge metal meets alternative metal meets 70s hard rock. I think that describes Totimoshi's Avenger quite well. Their style is characterized by a blend of fairly aggressive and heavy riffage, a lot of which is perhaps quite simple, but powerful in the same way that much hard rock from the 70s was. The impression of simplicity, however, is a bit deceptive, as the riffage is often backed by odd

ONLINE COEXTINCTION LABEL OPENS, RELEASES UNSANE

UNSANE - Scrape
Out of the ashes of traditional music business comes Coextinction Recordings. Based in Brooklyn and run out of the Translator Audio recording studio, the label was started by several local musicians, including Dave Curran of Unsane. Rather than focus on signing artists and putting out full-length albums, the idea is to work with musicians on quick, creative, one-time projects, then distribute

PICTURE THIS: Melvins & Totimoshi @ Slim’s 9-19

Totimoshi Openers Totimoshi were pheeeeenominal. Didn't know they were an Oakland band, totally missed that memo, but now living in LA and working on a new album.  Antonio, a very unassuming rocker, conjured sludge metal magic from his guitar. And the merch gal turned out to be Meg, who laid down a steady bass barrage. LIVE REVIEW: THE MELVINS

The MelvinsWhen: Friday, June 25, 2010Where: Double Door, Chicago, ILWith: Totimoshiby Andrew Wilhelm (CHI)My trilogy o' My War concludes with perhaps the most significant band to take inspiration from the album: the Melvins. Greg Ginn asked "How slow can you go?" and the Melvins responded with "Boris." Given the Melvins' penchant for doing whatever the hell they want and (mostly) succeeding, you

Melvins melt eardrums in Vancouver (7/5)

Melvins melt eardrums in Vancouver (7/5) There was something very 90’s about the Melvins show I caught at Vancouver’s The Rickshaw Theatre the other night, and it wasn’t just that the headliners were those formidable pioneers of grunge and sludge metal. From the venue’s concrete floor, to the makeshift bars which were only serving hard liquor since their beer order never came in, to the “Moshing and stage diving at your own risk” sign near the seedy entrance, the whole production had this half-assed, “Hey man, let’s put on a concert” kind of vibe. And [...]

Show Review: ISIS, MELVINS, TOTIMOSHI in NYC, 6/19/10

Knowing I was about to go see the Melvins for the first time and ISIS for the last time, I knew I had to pregame. Needless to say I was properly toasted by the time the show started. My friends and I got there plenty early to make sure to get good spots. We ...

Melvins @ The Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn 6-19-10

Melvins @ The Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn 6-19-10 A couple of weeks ago, I reviewed The Melvins' new album, The Bride Screamed Murder, which was released on June 1st.  That same day, they began their North American tour. Isis has joined them for a week, and it turns out that these are some of the last shows that they will ever play.  Although originally billed as Melvins/Isis, Isis has been headlining shows.  There's some speculation on the switch is that it turned out to be Isis' final tour.  However, it probably had more to do with the fact that The Melvins shared drums and [...]

The Melvins announce The Bride Screamed Murder

25 years down and still no signs of showing down. On June 1st, the Melvins will unveil their latest studio effort, The Bride Screamed Murder . via Ipecac Recordings. Like its previous two predecessors, the full-length will hear founding member/frontman Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Crover team up with Big Business members Coady Willis and Jared Warren. And awesome enough, the Melvins will hit the road in support of the release. Beginning in June, the band will travel across North America, with stops at the Bonnaroo and Sled Island music festivals included, through early July. [...]

ST. VITUS + TOTIMOSHI + SAVIOURS + ANCESTORS @ ULTRAVIOLET SOCIAL CLUB

St. Vitus steamrolled over us, like some kind of unstoppable collection of slow-moving gears and belts chomping flesh and bone into mush in its gruesome machinery. The years have not diminished their skill or their energy.

SAINT VITUS: WE’RE STILL BORN TOO LATE

Saint Vitus has held a special place in my heart since I first heard ‘Look Behind You’ on The Blasting Concept Vol. 2 , where they unknowingly created a genre of heavy metal that had yet to be named. I spoke with founding member Dave Chandler prior to Saint Vitus’ return to the city where they started. This interview by Kurt Midness .

CRUSTCAKE PICKS - LA SHOWS 10/23 - 10/30

by beatmasterspeech (LA)Hey Angelenos! How about that Ancestors record release show where the cops shut it down before Black Math Horseman or Ancestors even had a chance to strum a note? That was cool! I love the police! Well this week we have two shows at official venues that either have a permit to put on shows or have paid off the necessary pigs to leave 'em alone. Stop one should be this
