A fine and funky concert complete with the full power house of rhythm is captured here on this recording of Tower Of Power and fit for 'Bumpsters' everywhere! Recorded with an appreciative audience at Ultrasonic Studios Hempstead, NY, USA back on May 14th, 1974 this is a superb example of the band who continue to impress and perform today. Some background from Wikipedia here that covers up to the time of this concert - The roots of the band go back to the summer of 1968, when [...]

I don't know if the correct term is "blessed," "graced," or "honored," but I felt all of the above when guest DJ Wyndham's funky mix landed in my inbox this month. I can think of no more fitting of a mix in light of Don Cornelius' recent passing. I know you all got soul, so be sure to enjoy these Super Low Prices. February 2012 Mix - "Super Low Prices" guest mix by DJ Wyndham 01 Paul Nero - This Is Soul (1970) [...]
Last night featured yet another great episode of HBO's hit drama How To Make It In America and the music added to the awesomeness of it all. In my opinion, this is by far the best show on television right now. It's hip, fresh, and is of interest to a wide range of people. My middle-aged [...]

Let's get one thing straight, The Giant Panther doesn't know how to dance, but there is one particular genre of music that I can't ever sit still for. I don't have an ounce of funk running through my veins, the closest I get to funky is the odor coming from my running sneakers, but I can never get enough of the the killer combination of funk/soul/jazz. Some of my favorites to get my funk fix from include The Godfather, The Meters, The J.B.'s (Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker etc), more recent acts like Soulive, and of course, the unmistakable Tower of [...]

This Saturday, Dallas once again celebrates its finest day of the year, St. Patrick's Day. There is no logic or reason as to why Dallas goes so bananas for this particular holiday, but it certainly beats all others in this fine city. Below is a compilation of events that are going to be happening this Saturday (Dallas only) for the holiday, and I may be adding to said list thoroughout the day or tomorrow, so check early, check often, and I'll see you Saturday. 31st Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade | Greenville Avenue | Info [...]

What do you get when you combine the vocal register of the Philly Soul of the Ojay's lead singer Eddie LeVert , and B.B. King and George Benson guitar styles with Tower of Power and the Crusaders type of horns? You get Arthur Adams and his dynamic new album Stomp The Floor . Adams is a mainstay of the Los Angeles Blues scene. For a long time he has gigged as the house bandleader at B.B. King's Los Angeles niteclub and [...]
Influential Australian indie-rock band The Go-Betweens are to receive an honor perfectly befitting their name: a bridge named after them. The Go Between Bridge , currently under construction in their hometown of Brisbane, was so-named after a public vote on eleven suggested names. It will connect Milton and South Brisbane over the Brisbane River. It's not uncommon for musicians or other prominent figures to have roads named after them, but such an appropriate naming of a major structure is rare. It'd be great if Australia also had a Highway To Hell , [...]

Warner/Reprise accounted for the second half of 1972 with two more double-LP samplers, both with the variety that characterized the previous offerings. The wide range of musical styles was heightened by the fact that the label also distributed records from other imprints including Bearsville (Foghat), Bizarre (Frank Zappa & the Mothers), Brother (Beach Boys), Capricorn (Allman Brothers), Chrysalis (Jethro Tull), Pentagram, Raccoon and Viva. On Burbank, we got to hear some more rock from Alice Cooper, with "Public Animal #9," some bloozy boogie from Foghat, some New Orleans from The Meters with "Cabbage Alley" and good ol' Arlo [...]

You're probably familiar with the term the Great American Songbook , the body of songs, primarily written between the 20's and 60's, that form the cannon of standards that singers of that period heavily drew upon. It's composed of songs written by such songwriters as Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein , and others, and if you look at any albums from the big acts of the day, you'll find all sorts of credits to them. Ella Fitzgerald even recorded a series of eight albums in the 50's [...]
What is Hip? - Tower of Power 5.14.74 - Ultrasonic Studios, Hempstead, NY One of my favorite genres of music is funk. Funk seems to have a lot of different connotations for different people. However, if I had to define the funk I'm a fan of most, I'd direct all interested booty shakers to this band and this song. If you've never heard Tower of Power, or only remember that Balco roidster Victor Conte played bass for the group in a later incarnation, then sit back, hit play and be prepared for uncontrollable funkgasms.
Waiting for Columbus has to be one of the best live albums ever recorded and "Spanish Moon" perfectly encapsulates everything that made Little Feat a treasure.
San Francisco funk ensemble Cold Blood were contemporaries of Bay Area greats Tower of Power and supposedly got their first break from Janis Joplin. Driven by the powerful vocals of Lydia Pense, the band unleashed a number of classic early-'70s records, including 1973's monster Thriller (a decade earlier than Mr. Jackson!), which includes this epic version of Bill Wither's "Kissing My Love". We dropped this jam at a dance party a while back, and people actually danced to it! I know, right? To a song they didn't even [...]
