While a lot of folks bill this kid as being in the same genre as folks like Stoney LaRue , Cross Canadian Ragweed , Max Stalling , et al. it is my opinion that he's not. Now mind you, I hadn't heard a lot of his stuff before Junky Star but what I had heard I wouldn't have classified as Red Dirt which is probably why I hadn't actually checked out more of his stuff. I got this album from a friend of mine and it sat un-listened to and gathering dust until a few [...]
The seminal Townes Van Zandt track makes two things pretty clear; the man sure can tell a story and pick a mean guitar.

Have been listening to the excellent More Townes van Zandt By the Great Unknown album this week releases on For The Sake Of The Song records, the second covers record of Townes songs by a host of unknown (relatively speaking) but talented artists. My favourite from the album, courtesy of For The Sake of the Song and the original from the album Our Mother the Mountain Phosphorescent - Why She's Acting This Way Townes van Zandt [...]

( Sad Songs & Waltzes is a recurring feature on Muzzle of Bees, where artists share their favorite sad songs. Previous contributors include Megafaun , Delta Spirit , Damien Jurado , Conrad Plymouth , and Roadside Graves .) We're very excited to be presenting Frontier Ruckus in Madison ( High Noon Saloon , November 10th ) and Milwaukee ( Cactus Club , November 12th) later this month. Their album, Deadmalls & Nightfalls , is one of our favorites of the year and we cannot wait [...]

I've been watching the second series of the excellent chemistry-teacher-turned-cryst al-meth-cook drama Breaking Bad this week. One episode featured The Be Good Tanyas cover of Townes Van Zandt's Waitin' Around to Die. It's from their second album Chinatown which I'd not given a spin for some time and thoroughly enjoyed listening to again. MP3: The Be Good Tanyas - Waiting Around To Die But it! Chinatown (Amazon) Townes claimed that [...]

It seems like every time I hear someone talk about Justin Townes Earle, he is being introduced with the same few points. "He's Steve Earle's Kid" , "You know he's named after Townes Van Zandt", and "That guy went to rehab after getting booted from his dad's band" always preface any discussion about his music. His latest album removes the need for such an introduction. Instead, meet Justin Townes Earle - a talented young singer/songwriter with a classic sound and a really good new album called Harlem River Blues. Harlem River Blues may be short on running time [...]
For all their grand, benevolent statement and intentions utopian societies are rarely looked upon with favor by the wider populace. The Oneida Community of the mid and latter 19th century New York State was hardly an exception. The Community was founded on John H. Noyes' theology of Perfectionism, a form of Christianity with two basic [...]

Townes Van Zandt: Black Crow Blues [ purchase ] Bob Dylan: Black Crow Blues [ purchase ] A twofer transition today gets us from the blues to the birds in one fell swoop. First, it's been seven months since we last posted a Townes Van Zandt song here on Star Maker Machine - the longest we've gone without a tune from the cowboy troubadour since our inception. Happily, [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music After becoming one of the biggest rock stars of all time by "borrowing" from old bluesmen, Robert Plant seems almost penitent with 'Band of Joy,' his latest foray into traditional roots and country that is due out Sept. 14. On Sunday night at New York's Bowery Ballroom, the 62-year-old admitted that in their youth, he and his fellow Brits thought they knew American music, but they were so busy "staring [...]
Despite the fact that his legend has grown since his untimely death on New Year's Day in 1997, Townes Van Zandt remains a woefully underappreciated talent. Between his first album (For the Sake of... Download your favourite album at The Mood Indicator

We wrap up our Labor Day singles sock hop rock-a-thon with a few B-sides, some very famous, some legendary and some totally unknown. In 1970 Led Zeppelin cut its classic Led Zeppelin III, and the first single off that album was "Immigrant Song." The flip side was "Hey, Hey What Can I Do." The song was the only non-album track Zeppelin would offer up during its career, and for the longest time the only way you could hear it was on a scratchy single (or through the benevolence of a local radio DJ), but it's since appeared on [...]

When the songs are that good it's no surprise that there is a pair of albums out in the next month or so featuring covers of the late, great Townes van Zandt's work. The first one is Riding the Range - The songs of Townes Van Zandt , there's an extra angle on this one as part of the proceeds from the sale goes to the QE2 Activity Centre , the album features 20 tracks in all from a great selection of [...]

It's a (Re)Covered weekend, with Townes today, and more from the wide world of coverage to come tomorrow. Happy long weekend, and enjoy the tunes! As noted in last week's comments, we're just days away from the official release date for Riding The Range: the Songs of Townes van Zandt , a 20-track benefit for the QE2 Activity Centre , which "specialises in providing day activities and activity holidays for people with disabilities". If you're a regular reader, [...]
In all my posts about Mr. Steve Earle, I've never shared this video, for some reason. It's "Ft. Worth Blues", Steve's tribute to Townes Van Zandt written after Townes' death on New Year's Day 1997. The studio version serves as the finale to Steve's excellent 1997 album El Corazon . As for this video, I'm not certain of the particular event/program, but it's obviously a gathering of singer/songwriters to pay homage to Townes. Most affecting other than Steve himself is a crying Nanci Griffith next to him. "Ft Worth Blues" has always been my [...]

[mp3] Marissa Nadler: "Daisy Where Did You Go" After receiving a nice little note from Ms. Nadler, we're happy to say that her fantastic 17 track handmade covers record is back on sale on her Etsy page . Also available are the acoustic demos from her most recent record Little Hells . The covers record features some of Stark's all time favorite tunes, including a heavy dose of Townes Van Zandt. Straight to the heart. Included are "Pancho and Lefty" "Colorado Girl" and "Our Mother The Mountain" as well as other [...]

Photo: SA Steve @ Flickr Song of the Shrimp is one of the weirder tunes in the Elvis Presley canon but now has an odd poignancy in light of the effect the Gulf Coast oil spill has had on the region's shrimpers . Robert Plant is back in the studio, and has just finished recording a full length CD with his old band. Sorry Zeppelin fans, the "old band" I am speaking of is the Band of Joy, the experimental blues outfit he played in with John Bonham before his days in Led Zeppelin. The new Band of Joy isn't a proper reunion however, but instead a pretty much completely different (but impressive) lineup featuring singer Patty Griffin, guitarist Buddy Miller, drummer Marco Giovino and bassist Byron House, and multi instrumentalist Darrell Scott. The new album is set to release on [...]
HANK ALTOGETHER: The always enjoyable Cover Lay Down has an excellent cut of Zach's new fav. lyricist Hip Hatchet doing "Loretta" by Townes Van Zandt. Listen here . Listen to more, here .

Virgil and Co. released their latest mixtape earlier this week. This volume was inspired by the upcoming release of the NEW I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch In The House album, The Sounds Of Dying . This album (hopefully) marks the triumphant return of ICLASOB as a band after a couple of years on hiatus. The album was officially released for preorder today and if you preorder it you get an immediate mp3 download of the complete album. Trust me, I’ve had the album for a few months now....it’s fucking fantastic and you should stop reading this post [...]
