The world of pop is always a better place when there's new music from Alison Moyet about to enter it. It arrives today in the UK (6 May) in the form of the minutes , which is scheduled to wash up on U.S. shores on June 11. Here are my not-so-random thoughts on the album's 11 tracks. "Horizon Flame" Ambient and futuristic, which are two words one might not have previously associated with Alison Moyet. A post-space age love song (not to be confused with "Yesterday's Flame," Track 1 on 2002's Hometime ), [...]

The Atlantic chronicles Salman Rushdie's artistic decline since the fatwa. Before the fatwa, Salman Rushdie wrote two great books, Midnight’s Children (1980) and Shame (1983). Since the fatwa, he has not written any. Before the fatwa, Rushdie brilliantly exposed the corrupt dynasties and pathologies of two sundered societies (India and Pakistan). Since the fatwa, Rushdie has allowed flamboyant language and narrative trickery to overshadow biting political satire and acute characterization. Before the fatwa, Rushdie lived a relatively modest life in London. Now, as Joseph Anton drearily attests, Rushdie has become a New York socialite [...]

I read the news (again) today, oh boy. So this is posted without comment, except to say the song appears on Tracy Thorn's lovely Christmas album "Tinsel and Lights," out via Merge. Thanks to Buzz Bands LA's station chief in New Zealand, Keith , for giving me the heads-up. Have a warm Christmas Eve.

offering a more somber approach to the holiday period, tracey thorn takes on the xmas album by doing cover versions and writing 2 new tracks for her latest collectoin 'tinsel and lights'. fans of tracey will be pleased to know that everything but the girl partner ben watt performs on 2 tracks (one of which is 'joy'). so sit back and go to that quiet place with tracey as she gives you a taste of a more somber xmas. tracey thorn - joy tracey thorn - [...]

We're only about a week from Christmas, so if you didn't break out the holiday music yet, now is the time. We recommend Tracey Thorn's Tinsel And Lights (Merge). The Everything But The Girl girl recorded 10 seasonal covers of songs by the likes of Dolly Parton, Joni Mitchell, Sufjan Stevens and Low, as well as two cool [...]
Stereogum It's a sad state of affairs when, for most of us, the idea of "Christmas Music" immediately conjures nightmare associations with stuff like Jingle Cats or that Mariah Carey song that plays 24 hours a day in shopping malls from the beginning of November until the ringing in of the new year. Holiday albums have been traditionally seen as (at best) sweet but vaguely tacky and (at worst) cheap cash grabs usually aimed at making easy money and/or fulfilling contractual obligations with record labels. That being said, [...]

"Because of the dark, we see the beauty in the spark." From Tracey Thorn 's new seasonal album Tinsel and Lights , "Joy" is one of two original songs standing with what we've called "a grab bag of divinely obscure (and delightfully unpredictable) indie gems". More DC on Tinsel 's abundant charms here .

Do you know now why Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl did a Christmas seasonal album? Well, she likes to walk around London looking at souvenirs. Filed under: Beats , Brit Brit Brit , Clip Tagged: album , and , bight lights , download , joy , new , single , tinsel , Tracey Thorn
A few weeks ago, Everything But The Girl singer Tracey Thorn released her solo Christmas album Tinsel And Lights , which has covers of seasonal music from people like Sufjan Stevens and the White Stripes. One of the album's few originals is the plainspoken, sincere opener "Joy." And in that song's new video, we see Thorn wandering around Christmastime London, as the camera calmly and lovingly lingers on all the lights. Watch it below. Read More...
Oooh the RACEY HORN is giving us some t-minus two weeks until x-mas JOY to the world via her new music video and I'm dashing off to another meeting.
Watch 'Joy' below. Tinsel & Lights is out now. Like Tracey Thorn on Facebook. Click here to view the embedded video. MP3: Tracey Thorn - Oh, The Divorces
One of the hardest qualities to bring to Christmas music is seriousness. During a holiday that is associated with smiling faces, happy memories, and all things “JOY!,” it’s hard to not only capture the sombre reality of life outside of all this merriment, but also to create something people want to bother listening to come the festive season. The only reason Band Aid 20 made such an impression on the charts is because if you spoke out against it at the time you were considered a soulless prick (along with the fact it was plastered across almost every media outlet).
