I'm in a restless mood tonight, yawing wide in both taste and timbre. But my nocturnal meanders keep taking me back to covers of the same few songs - and for me, that's generally an indication that the blogger's mind will not rest until we take on the history of the author and his songbook. Ironically, however, tonight's feature subject exists in short window of time indeed, even as his songs linger as cultural earworms in the culture today. So let's move right along to this living legend who has not recorded a [...]

Tracy Bonham does not sing about skyscrapers, Dutch explorers, or Native American linguistic variations on her new release Masts of Manhatta . She does, however, deliver a solid multi-instrumental performance with songs about wistful summer romance, moving to the suburbs, and balancing life between cityscapes and country roads. The title of the record comes from the famous Walt Whitman poem " Crossing Brooklyn Ferry " and, according to Bonham, reflects how perspective on urban living crystallizes as you slowly sail away from the city. The idea arises from experience: [...]

Brooklyn-based cellist Daniel Cho passed away earlier this summer, a day before he was to play with Regina Spektor at the Montreux Jazz Festival. In addition to hiw work with Spektor, Cho also arranged and played with Katy Perry, John Mayer, Mandy Moore, Rachael Yamagata and Coldplay. He was also a correspondent for ESPN Soccernet, where he covered South Korea's national team. Regina Spektor, Jesse Owen Youngs, Tracy Bonham, Jupiter One, Cooper (Cho's rock band) and many others are coming together this Monday at Music Hall of Williamsburg to play a tribute show to Daniel and help raise [...]

Just as I consider the (lack of) merit stereotypical female singer-songwriters have - all acoustic guitars, lilted vocals and viciously weak lyrics - I stumble across another to test my opinion and force me to reconsider. Of course, there's only so much one fan can take before the affair becomes droll and irritatingly familiar, but there's potential for success in every genre, no matter how predictable. Fortunately for Tracy Bonham , her fifth studio album Masts of Manhatta falls on the right side of the tracks. Strings are integral to the composition of this recording, [...]

Some time ago, I happened upon the movie Gremlins . As I watched the zany antics of the titular creatures, I took note of the actress who played the mother of the main human character. She looked familiar. By the time she went all Sarah Connors on the marauding gremlins - even making a mess of the family microwave to kill one of them - I had to consult IMDb . Frances Lee McCain was the name of the actress. Scanning her credits, it was quickly apparent as to why [...]

Mick Jones of The Clash once sang, "I wasn't born so much as I fell out", which is a notion I can get with, since my family isn't very emotionally demonstrative. That's not as bad as it sounds, since we all love each other, so I was surprised when out of the blue, my mom started letting me know that she cared for me. I was pretty perplexed and answered with eyes arched as she was waited for a response that wasn't soon forthcoming. After a few more tries, there was an explanation that she'd read in my blog how [...]

Part three in a series . The heart has many hiding places, many meanings: hearts that break and mend, hearts that fail and falter, hearts that fly away after touching ours. This tiny lump of meat, its electric pulse no bigger than a battery, that flutters like a bird to tell us we are alive. And we who are human and claim to know our hearts, we forget that living hurts, and are surprised when it reminds us so often. This afternoon my children [...]

Tracy Bonham: One Hit Wonder Tracy Bonham: One Hit Wonder (acoustic) [ purchase ] It's slightly ironic that Boston's Tracy Bonham would choose to include a song called "One Hit Wonder" on her 1996 album, The Burdens Of Being Upright - especially considering the album boasted her biggest (and only) 'hit' with "Mother, Mother." But being labeled as a one-hit wonder is not fair in Bonham's case. Sure, she belonged to the post-Morissette core of female musicians that [...]

I've been meaning to write my (semi) annual Christmas post for the last couple of weeks, but the frenzy of the holiday season has nearly overwhelmed me this year. Still, I hope that this year's batch of songs will still be appreciated as people prepare for their holiday celebrations. Some of these songs have been featured here before. Some are brand new. But all of them are favorites of mine and will be great to hear year after year. On behalf of Womenfolk, I wish everyone a happy holiday season. Classics: [...]

Tracy Bonham is a singer and a violinist, she incorporates her two talents to create her music. When her first album released in the early 90s it was an alt-rock themed record. But her most recent album, Blink the Brightest , went a different route; it also released on a different label. She's not a diva, she's not teeny bop pop music, she's more like a Paula Cole with a violin. I think there needs to be some more harmonizing going on, specifically with vocals because at times her voice sounds too [...]
